There used to be a shop on Joppa Rd. near Towson called Baynesville Electronics that was cool. The folks working there always wanted to know what you were up to if you bought some wire or caps or something. They went away about 10 years ago now. Sad. 2 1 Quote
velorush Posted March 23 Posted March 23 Our Martin Radio Shack (the larger town in our county that even has a UT "at" school) went out of business around the same time. Absolutely saved my butt when I, on a Saturday, accidentally made contact biasing an amp and blew a couple of resistors. Unbelievable to be able to drive fifteen minutes and grab a couple of replacements rather than wait a week for the mail. 5 Quote
beezerboy Posted March 25 Posted March 25 the chip got here a couple days ago and I started the build but went to an 8 pin socket instead of wiring straight to the chip. got it almost done... last connection... and the socket broke. the little legs are too fragile when not mounted on a PC board. so, I figured I'd try again and be more careful but the result is the same... broke that sucker trying install the chip. so... solder straight to the chip it is. maybe tomorrow 5 Quote

My thoughts too. the legs on the 8 pin sockets I had were pretty short. not sure you could get a good solder on whats left. I considered it. if I had another, I would splay out the legs and solder jumper wires to the terminals, then cover them with epoxy. Steel Stick type stuff, like dough when mixed. not liquid that might get in the sockets. and yeah, the 1k replaced with a pot was on my list as well. I'm thinkin 2k. I'll see what I have as for it being $5.... no. not unless you have leftovers. the chip is $10 to start with. and you don't need to use those 600 volt rated yellow caps either (couple 3 or 4 bucks each) 3 2 Quote

I met him 43 years ago at a first year college electral circuits class. We found out we both liked Y&T, motorcycles and guitars... then started a band! Wish us luck! 6 Quote
