polara Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Izzit just me that doesn't want to gig with the really nice, shiny, pretty instruments? I'm selling my white Artist to Riffpowers 'cos it's practically perfect and I'm scared I'll bump it into a mic stand or drop it or spill a beer on it. The Special FM gets "oooooohs" from everyone who sees it (pretty transparent green finish, dang near flawless condition for a '94 that was $550 of the 'bay) and I doubt I'll play it outside the bedroom. But the '83 G&L that has been ragged out, stripped, repainted, restripped, gouged, routed, rewired, and basically drug behind a truck gets played. So does the '94 ArchstudioGThumbucustom, with its acute Hameritis, dings, and binding that's turned amber and is starting to show some gaps.Shame about the pretty ones. They both play like buttah but I don't want to scratch them!
Ethan Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Thats why I dont buy real expensive or super nice guitars...after the last show I played, I practically had to take my SG apart and clean every piece to get all the encrusted sweat off of it. I wouldn't wanna do that with a 10-top PRS or something.
Steve Haynie Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I have taken my 8 string bass into some bars to play. It was a custom order all the way, but I bought it to play. It has been babied, and I never stray away far from it. I would be just as concerned over any expensive guitar. The korina Hamers are not "oohs and ahhs" guitars, but they are priced the same. I do understand the idea that some guitars have gotten to the point of being a player, but Hamers have that broken in feel that makes them feel almost the same. The stigma of not wanting to scratch a new guitar should not be a factor in playing, but sometimes it is.
Turdus Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 The only time condition matters is when you go to sell something. I used to baby my guitars, but in the last 5 years, have not cared that much. I have a custom shop Tele that is quickly becomming a relic. I know it is the one guitar I will never sell, so I am breaking it in nicely. I have a few guitars that have just made it past one year of ownership. That must mean I am going to keep them. Time to beat 'em up I guess.
cmatthes Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Steve:Your 8 string is a stunner, but I bet it sounds amazing as well. My b-12M and b-4M were both shiny new custom orders at one point, but have been sweat logged, bumped and bruised and grunged-up. I still wipe 'em down and buff 'em up all purty, but am less concerned about a self-inflicted (note I said "SELF-INFLICTED") ding, scrape or scratch than I used to be. It pretty much comes with the territory.I'd like to keep my Monaco 3 as nice as possible though. I'd be far more bummed if that got battle-scarred, but I'm sure it'll have it's day too.
JohnnyThunders Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 My purity ones sit hanging from the wall and are slowly being sold off. I love the beaters, just bought a black special that is going to get about a zillion punk stickers on it. I sold the Punisher because it was just perfect and I didn't want to mess it up.
Craig Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 When I bought a PRS brand new in 2000, my friend Ben kept getting annoyed with me polishing it. He asked to see the guitar, and propmtly dinged the back on purpose. My jaw hit the floor, and he said simply "Now it's got an f-ing dent in it, so you can play it and enjoy it. It's not furniture." He was right, and I now try and be careful, but I play all my instruments wherever and whenever I can.
pesocaster Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I buy them to play.... I'll gig any of my guitars... I'm not a collector... granted I do try to keep them from harms way.... but I wont loose sleep if a little accidental ding or scratch happens....
sw686blue Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 He was right, and I now try and be careful, but I play all my instruments wherever and whenever I can. He may have been right but did you give him a beating at least?

My jaw hit the floor, and he said simply "Now it's got an f-ing dent in it, so you can play it and enjoy it. It's not furniture." Sounds like a que to pick up one of his guitars, throw it through the windshield of his car, kick him square in the balls and say,"Thanks for the education, a$$wipe, how do you like the way I've applied it?"

I like this side of you, Badger. So Craig, were you asked to speak at Ben's funeral?Biggest dick move like that I ever pulled was when I was riding from New York to New Jersey with my drummer, his girlfriend and her sister. Sis was driving, I was riding shotgun, the other two were fucking in the back I think. Anyway, I was rummaging through her cassettes in search of some tunes and found a copy of Supertramp's "Breakfast In America." Without hesitating I rolled the window down and whipped it onto the interstate. She was LIVID! I replied, "I just did you a favor."Sorry for the derail.
Monacosis Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 i haven't properly cleaned my M3 since i got it more than 2 years ago. startin' to look good......i feel kind of embarrased playing a shiny new guitar. as always, ymmv, imho, etc.mike
kizanski Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 He asked to see the guitar, and propmtly dinged the back on purpose. JeffR and I have a comeback for this. It's called "Shoeing."You take off your shoe, sneeker, boot, or whatever, and put your hand in the hole where you would normally pur your foot, only backward. You then pop him as hard as you can right in his forehead with the heel.If you do it right, it will knock him back about 5 feet onto his ass, AND leave a reverse impression of your heel on his forehead. If you ever see anyone walking around with "sdeK," "esrevnoC," "ekiN," etc., above their eyes, you'll know what happened and that he probably did something really DUMB to deserve it.Edited to add: Muse's Supertramp story does not apply.ALL of Supertramp's "discography" should be flung out of a moving motor vehicle. And the faster the vehicle is travelling, the better.
kanegon Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 My wife is like -- incredibly beautiful. I wouldn't want anyone to errr, y'know, "mess" with her or nothin', so I keep her locked up at home, in the bedroom. This way, when the mood hits me, I can just oggle at her and have her all to myself without worrying about dings and scratches. It's not easy keeping them in mint condition, you gotta think about resale.

MCChris Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I like Supertramp. Really. Get out of here. And I don't mean that like "Get outta here! You're kidding!" I mean it like, "get the hell out of here."
riffpowers Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Yes I will hopefully soon be the proud owner of polara's artist!!Interesting but I used to not like gigging nice instruments either, in fact I bought a beat to shit les paul special for exactly that purpose. But lately, my opinion has changed.A good guitar is a joy to play, and while I wouldn't gig a collectors item, I would certainly gig the korina jr and I'm sure will gig the artist, although if I ever play anywhere really horrible I'll take the beat up special.I have a lp custom that I've owned since new in 1990, and now its really battle scarred and roadweary, so much so I actually nearly retired it.But lately I think that "keepers" (like my hamer jr) should be gigged.I don't care if they get dinged or bashed, because they're still cool instruments, nothing stays mint forever, and I don't care about resale value cos I won't be selling!!!Every bump and ding will be well earned, and look how cool relic guitars can be!!
Kurt L Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 ALL of Supertramp's "discography" should be flung out of a moving motor vehicle. Gotta stick up for "Crime of the Century." Great album.
gregc Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Everything plays the show. No safe-queens in my house.gregc
Matt Mattson Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 No safe-queens in my house.Ditto. If it comes through the door, I play with it.
cmatthes Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Go to the EPA Website...There's apparently a severe penalty for dropping Supertramp music in any format randomly in the great outdoors. For disposal, the site provides a link to Department of Homeland Security.
