SteveB Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Kings X's Dug Pinnick , from "Believe" on "Live all over the place""You see when I grew up, I grew up in the Church, and they told me to believe in God, believe in Jesus, then other people told me to believe in Krishna, somebody else said believe in Buddha, then they said the Indian religion, then they said believe in the president of the United States, they said believe in the United States of America, they said believe in everybody but myself. I wanna tell you people, if you don't believe in yourself, you ain't got shit to believe in. Believe in yourself.""Now the media will tell you there's something wrong with you. They say you're too tall, you're too short, you're too fat, you're too skinny, your eyes are the wrong color, your hair's the wrong color, they say blondes have more fun, they say your tits are too small, and your dick is too small, and they want you to fix yourself. People, there's nothing wrong with you. Nothing wrong with you. There's nothing wrong with anybody here. ""And I want to tell you about this thing called Fear. The United States is dying because of Fear. We're afraid of everbody. We're afraid of terrorism, we're afraid of Mexicans coming up, we're afraid of Haitians coming into this land, we're afraid of everything. We are built upon fear, we have guns, more guns than anybody else, we kill each other, we hate each other, we fight each other, this is America. Wake Up! ""We're all right you're all right!. You're all right, you're all right."
MCChris Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Pretty much the lyrical content of the entire Rage Against the Machine catalog. On the "Live at the Grand Olympic Ballroom" DVD Zack launches into a classic rant before "Killing in the Name."
alpep Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 "All I wanted was a Pepsi""but she wouldn't give it to me. ""I'll probably just get hit by a car anyway"
Guest Meshuggah Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Dayum. It's mattsonized in content.InstitutionalizedSometimes I try to do things and it just doesn't work out the way I wanted to.I get real frustrated and I try hard to do it and I take my time and it doesn't work out the way I wanted to.It's like I concentrate real hard and it doesn't work outEverything I do and everything I try never turns outIt's like I need time to figure these things outBut there's always someone there goingHey Mike:You know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately. You know, maybe you should get away and maybe you should talk about it, maybe you'll feel a lot betterAnd I go:No it's okay, you know I'll figure it out, just leave me alone I'll figure it out. You know I'll just work by myself. And they go:Well you know if you want to talk about it I'll be here you know and you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it.And I go:No I don't want to I'm okay, I'll figure it out myself and they just keep bugging me and they just keep bugging me and it builds up inside and it builds up inside. So you're gonna be institutionalizedYou'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyesYou won't have any sayThey'll brainwash you until you see their way.I'm not crazy - institutionalizedYou're the one who's crazy - institutionalizedYou're driving me crazy - institutionalizedThey stuck me in an institutionSaid it was the only solutionTo give me the needed professional helpTo protect me from the enemy, myselfI was in my room and I was just like staring at the wall thinking about everythingBut then again I was thinking about nothingAnd then my mom came in and I didn't even know she was there she called my nameAnd I didn't even hear it, and then she started screaming: MIKE! MIKE!And I go:What, what's the matterAnd she goes:What's the matter with you?I go:There's nothing-wrong mom.And she goes:Don't tell me that, you're on drugs! And I go:No mom I'm not on drugs I'm okay, I was just thinking you know, why don't you get me a Pepsi. And she goes:NO you're on drugs!I go:Mom I'm okay, I'm just thinking. She goes:No you're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't act that way!I go:Mom just give me a Pepsi pleaseAll I want is a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to meAll I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.Just a Pepsi. They give you a white shirt with long sleevesTied around you're back, you're treated like thievesDrug you up because they're lazyIt's too much work to help a crazyI'm not crazy - institutionalizedYou're the one who's crazy - institutionalizedYou're driving me crazy - institutionalizedThey stuck me in an institutionSaid it was the only solutionTo give me the needed professional helpTo protect me from the enemy, myselfI was sitting in my room and my mom and my dad came in and they pulled up a chair and they sat down, they go:Mike, we need to talk to youAnd I go:Okay what's the matterThey go:Me and your mom have been noticing lately that you've been having a lot of problems,You've been going off for no reason and we're afraid you're gonna hurt somebody,We're afraid you're gonna hurt yourself. So we decided that it would be in your interest if we put you somewhereWhere you could get the help that you need. And I go:Wait, what do you mean, what are you talking about, we decided!?My best interest?! How can you know what's my best interest is?How can you say what my best interest is? What are you trying to say, I'm crazy? When I went to your schools, I went to your churches,I went to your institutional learning facilities?! So how can you say I'm crazy. They say they're gonna fix my brainAlleviate my suffering and my painBut by the time they fix my headMentally I'll be deadI'm not crazy - institutionalizedYou're the one who's crazy - institutionalizedYou're driving me crazy - institutionalizedThey stuck me in an institutionSaid it was the only solutionTo give me the needed professional helpTo protect me from the enemy, myselfIt doesn't matter their insurance money is about to run out anyhow.
cmatthes Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 That is SUCH a rockin' song. One of the many highlights of "Repo Man".Classic stuff.(HFC Content - Pam "Cheap Chick" is in a scene in that one.)
Jack C Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 It's funny, TG, when I saw the title of the thread, I thought about Believe. I'm sure the rant loses something when taken out of the song and put in print, but that song is amazing. It's the one tune on the live album that overcomes the shitty production and improves upon the studio version.
Willie G. Moseley Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 "Liar": The Rollins Band (best line: "I'll tear your mind out!!!")Almost anything written by Roger Waters. As far as "has-beendom" goes, Waters is to music what Chevy Chase is to comedy.
Mindseyes Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Why dont you show me a little of that spine you've been saving for his mattress.......

belikerick Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 LOVE "Institutionalized"! I'd have to say the entire "Pretty Hate Machine" album but "Terrible Lie" is particularly ranting Hey God, why are you doing this to me? Am I not living up to what I'm supposed to be? Why am I seething with this animosity? Hey God, I think you owe me a great big apology Terrible lie (4x) Hey God, I really don't know what you mean Seems like salvation comes only in our dreams I feel my hatred grow all the more extreme Hey God, can this world really be as sad as it seems Terrible lie (4x) refrain: Don't take it away from me I need you to hold on to Don't take it away from me I need you to hold on to Don't take it away from me I need someone to hold on to Hey god, there's nothing left for me to hide I lost my ignorance, security and pride I'm all alone in a world you must despise Hey god, I believed that promises, your promises and lies You made me throw it all away My morals left to decay How many you betray You've taken everything My head is filled with disease My skin is begging you please I'm on my hands and knees I want so much to believe refrain I give you everything My sweet everything Hey god, I really don't know who I am In this world of piss And I'd also have to include "Low Self Opinion" by the Rollins Band & who could forget "Radio, Radio" by Elvis Costello Some of my friends sit around every evening and they worry about the times ahead But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference and the promise of an early bed You either shut up or get cut out; they don't wanna hear about it. It's only inches on the reel-to-reel. And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools tryin' to anaesthetise the way that you feel
