JohnnyThunders Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I never liked Tom Petty when he came out in the 70's, I was into well harder rock and this girl I was dating loved him. Absoultely loved him, drug me kicking and screaming to more shows than I can remember. I should have known better then, well to make a long story short, we got married and then divorced years later. So I'm flipping the channels last night and start watching this documentary on Tom Petty, got it at the start maybe 5 minutes into it. So I'm watching it and watching it. Can't stop. Really good documentary, watching all the cool guitars and amps. I was even getting into the music some. No Hamers though but some Dan Amstrong, Ibanez Destroyers, Vox amps, etc. etc. Not my style at all but the guy can really write a catchy song. Very talented. It's 3 hours later and it is still going, I check the Guide it is 4 hours long. Wife comes down and asks when I'm coming to bed. She looks up and says why are you watching Tom Petty, you don't like Tom Petty Roadhouse is on and the big fight scene is coming up. Let's watch the ending. I Tivo the rest head up stairs and I'm thinking I would really rather watch the end of the Tom Petty documentary. Shit!
ZR Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I've always liked Tom Petty. Great songwriter. What channel was that on?
kenjones Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I just did a search on my Tivo and it looks like the only other time it's going to be on again is November 3 at 2:00 pm on the Sundance channel.
cmatthes Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 It's a Peter Bodganovich documentary. They were filming scenes for it during the tour last year. I was talking to Ron Blair (Heartbreakers bassist) about it when they were in town and he was pretty excited about the whole thing. He mentioned that there were a number of surprises, and they had a massive camera crew/presence backstage and all over the stage at the Nissan Pavillion show I attended. They had a lot of guests and friends of the band showing up throughout the last tour - Stevie Nicks appeared for a few dates early on, but I believe Dylan and Lynne also sat in at times. It is in limited theater release right now, and the shows here in the DC area were sold out overnight. I was at work late last night, so missed it, but it will be out in wider release and will be in a big format DVD soon as well.
bobbymack Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I got a Best Buy only edition for $25 that includes 3 DVDs (the movie on 2, the 2006 Gainesville FL anniversary concert on the 3rd), and a CD soundtrack of the movie. It is well worth the watch, Petty is a complex guy who is big part genius great guy and small part cutthroat hardballer...interesting.
Matt Mattson Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I came across it while looking for something to watch on VH-1 (slim chance of that, lately) and agree it was very well done with the moviemaker not getting in the way with effects and slick garbage. Just a straightforward roll through the years.
HAMERMAN Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I always liked Petty some but I appreciate him now more than I did back in the day. Still - I would have Tivo'd Petty and watched Roadhouse 'cause Kelly Lynch was hot back then!
kenjones Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I bought the box set "Playback" a few years ago. I never realized how great the production is on his records. The 70's and 80's stuff is really well recorded/mixed.
mc2 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I've been a major Tom Petty fan since the start. He's in my Top 5 of all time faves.I actually got fired from one of my radio gigs for playing Tom Petty when he first came out. When the first Heartbreakers record was released, there was also an "official" live "Bootleg Bootleg" 12-inch released with, I think, 4 or 5 songs on it. If I recall, it was released after the initial "American Girl" single and the first Heartbreakers album. Anyway, I was playing the crap out of it and the station's Program Director told me to stop. I didn't and insisted "this guy will be huge."So, I got canned for continuing to play the Bootleg record because on the cover was Tom Petty dressed all in black leather and my idiot PD insisted that meant Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was "punk" and he didn't want to air punk music. Go figure. I think the real reason was that my PD hadn't yet gotten his payola from Petty's label to push the record.Ironcally, years later my rhythm guitarist (Carroll Sue Hill) would become one of the two backup vocalist for Tom Petty's "Rebels" tour. She's the same chick that was the cheerleader in John Cougar's "Little Pink Houses" video and sang backup on that album.
Guest pirateflynn Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 I never really thought about Tom Petty much until I saw him in concert many years ago. What a great surprise! Loved the show and have been a fan ever since. I'll keep an eye out for the documentry.

MoJohn Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Stevie Nicks appeared for a few dates early on...Stevie!Mmmm,MoJohn
Brooks Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 love tom pettys stuff, but don't have anything past the "best of" on cd (used to have a buncha vinyl). he's one of the few mainstream middle of the road FM rock guys that i really dig, i will have to pick this up.
Brentrocks Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 i just bought the new 4 disc set last week move/cd/documentary...it is awesome....i learned a lot in that movie, very well done!!!
Rockola Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Roadhouse is on and the big fight scene is coming up. Let's watch the ending. I Tivo the rest head up stairs and I'm thinking I would really rather watch the end of the Tom Petty documentary. Shit!you made the right call...
Cary Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 I picked it on from Best Buy on my way home from work today. Petty is one of my all-time favorites- saw him on his Long After Dark (Cedar Rapids, IA) , Southern Accents (Chicago) and Full Moon Fever (DC) tours. Definitely like his Pre-"Let Me Up I've Had Enough" stuff the best. although the later stuff is starting to grow on me, too. Thanks for the heads-up.
ZR Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Thanks for the heads-up. Me too. I DVR'd it the other day and have started watching it. It's cool.
sirDaniel Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 Great headsup. big TP fan. He couldn't have done it w/o Mike Campbell thought. Was great to see when he was featured in GP, Campbell was on the cover with him.
Stevieconlon Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 I've really been enjoying the film as well. I saw part of it when it showed earlier and just watched the rest of it last night.
jwhitcomb3 Posted November 4, 2007 Posted November 4, 2007 Thanks for the heads up on this. Picked up a copy at Best Buy, look forward to watching it after final exams are done!-Jonathan
elduave Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I'm an hour into disc one. It's killer. Really captures the essence of RNR back in the day. Lots of laughs and great music. I gotta thank CM for the Petty/Crowes experience a couple of summers ago.
cmatthes Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 EL - I've heard it's good. I'll have to put that on my XMas list or else bring some beer over and watch yours!
serial Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 I'm an hour into disc one. It's killer. Really captures the essence of RNR back in the day. Lots of laughs and great music. I gotta thank CM for the Petty/Crowes experience a couple of summers ago. That certainly gave the term "band meeting" a whole different meaning to me. Stayed up to see the Petty show on the Old Grey Whistle Test on VH1C last night. I've seen it tons of times and it's still great.
BruceM Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 I caught the last hour of the documentary a few days ago. Great stuff!I've never been a huge Petty fan, but have always liked some of the songs. After seeing the documentary and reading this thread, along with the recent ELO thread, I threw ELO, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and the Wilburys into the CD changer and have been listening to all that for a few days. I'm impressed.
