Pieman Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Coming to work today, I caught "Lola" by The Kinks on the radio. To me, it is constructed as a great short story. It progresses beautifully and is paced well. The story moves with the tempo. With its unexpected ending it is like an O. Henry story. It is cleverly told, witty, succint, etc. What are your favorites?

Willie G. Moseley Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 I want royalties. A lotta stuff from Harry Chapin, obviously, although they're a bit longer than most songs that (used to) get radio airplay, but so what. In particular, "Taxi" and "Mr. Tanner".
BadgerDave Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Take your pick from almost any Drive By Truckers effort."Tornados and Daddy's Cup" are among my favorites, but there are many, many more.
JohnnyScarp Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 "A Better Place To Be" - Harry Chapin ...And, just about any other song by him.
serial Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 -"The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" by Vicki Lawrence -"Billy Don't Be a Hero" by Bo Donaldson -"The Night Chicago Died" (with it's impossible geographic references to Daddy being a cop on the East Side of Chicago) by Paper Lace -"Convoy" by CW McCall -"Oh What a Lonely Boy" by Andrew Gold- Crap, there were a ton of these things in the 70s! Ok, so none were either perfect or anywhere near perfect. Edited to add (and how in the hell could I have forgotten) "Picnic Table Lovin" by Arthur Price and "Some Man is Fucking My Horsie (Mama Squirt Him With the Hose)" by Darlene Ross.
