bubs_42 Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 So to make a long story short, I drove to Chicago yesterday to make a drop and a pickup. I dropped off a case for RacerX, whom once again was top notch to deal with. I can't say enough good things about him, this story would get to long. So I depart to pickup the CL Prototype, and as I approached my destination I called the # so I can let the owner know that I was close. He instructs me to shoot past the pickup point 2 blocks and I could meet him there. Fast forward 5 minutes. I call him to let him know that I found the street and he replied I can see you look to your left.. Everyone knows that its freezing cold in IL right? Well his is standing on the corner, WITH THE GUITAR IN HAND... Waving it at me, I thought to myself, "Vintage Guitar+ 15 Degree Weather+ Warm Car= FUBAR! So I quickly look it over and hand him the money go about my way. It looks great with plenty of wear but not a solder joint or screw has ever been touched on it. Not to mention even though it has a lot of wear the frets were near perfect. Its a light guitar too boot! So i'm happy he's happy and I have a cheap guitar. HFC Tip Off + $275 = Priceless! Just a couple teasers, i'm stringing it up now, just got done cleaning it and poslishing the frets. FYI that is just lent on the Sustainblock, its like brand new... \
bubs_42 Posted January 9, 2010 Author Posted January 9, 2010 I'll give you tree fiddy fo it. If I would have seen your offer before I plugged it in you may have had a deal. We all say every guitar we get is awsome. God knows that I think that every Hamer sounds at the least "Good". I also love Humbucker and 24-3/4 scale guitars, they are just majic to my ears. But there are few guitars that just instantly make you smile. This one did before I got all my strings on. I put the E on and strung it up and my tools rattled in the drawer. I knew it was going to be a good day. Let me say this, I just put an add up here in December looking for a Tele and or a Jr. I found both those guitars in this one. I love it and it puts a smile on my face a mile wide. I don't know how the 90s Phantoms sound but I'll going to find out I'm telling you that. This guitar may not be the Lead Guitars dream but its definetly the Rythm Guitarist Dream Machine. Funk Rythms, Tele Twang, Chimey Chords. I can see now why Andy Summers like this guitar. Going to take some pics now. Its interesting, that it's wired with the Humbucker to the Front and the Single to the back and I take it both in the middle.
bubs_42 Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Is it a Phantom or a Prototype ?Prototype
HSB0531 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 How well did it survive the 15 degree weather?I still can't believe the guy was out in the cold waving the Prototype.
bubs_42 Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 How well did it survive the 15 degree weather? I still can't believe the guy was out in the cold waving the Prototype. It did just fine. I was suprised and amazed that It didn't have any issues. The Neck is straight as she can be and the finish has its share of battle wounds but it looks like it was just somebody's #1. I started by taking the 3 strings that were on it off. Looked like one electric, one acoustic, and one black string. Inspected the frets, which only the third had any kind of wear. I cleaned the board then taped it off and sanded an polished the frets and they look like brand new now. Oiled the board that was already nice and dark. The only thing from the Cold Temp and Warm car is that the guitar must have sweated a bit. First polishing my rag was a little red. Second time around with new rag nothing had come off. The color is strong and nicely transparent. I gave the Sustainblock a nice buff and strung it up. Would you believe that I didn't even have to make an adjustment on the neck or the block? Plays like a dream, I had an 81 Sunburst that someone on the board ended up with that was in about the same condition but these two guitars are the best sounding guitars I have come across. There is something about a guitar that was taken care of but had the shit played out of it. They sound great. The Sunburst had a neck that was not only thin but narrow as hell and that is the only reason I moved it. This neck feels like a strat neck, sorta like my Daytona. Little Tele, Little Strat, Little JR and it sounds great. Here are some more pics.
bubs_42 Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Already know that It will be a Koa Mirage and a Phantom Custom for my next two guitars. Starting Jan 1 2011.
belgian Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Is it a Phantom or a Prototype ?Prototype Love it !
ajoso Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I don't know how the 90s Phantoms sound but I'll going to find out I'm telling you that. Mine was miles apart from my Prototype: harsh and bright. Very pretty guitar though; I felt a bit bad about selling it - except when I tried to play it. Maybe I just had a bad one.I thought I scored with my stripped and refin'd Proto for $270... Yours is probably a once in a lifetime deal and a half!
bubs_42 Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 If I had the money I'd probly try to get the one Kiz has on Ebay. I just think the guitar is an intersting build. What they were going for and the outcome. Just a well balanced guitar.
BubbaVO Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 I am really happy with the last red guitar you sold me. Hmmm...if I hang out long enough, maybe just maybe...Oh did I type that out loud?
bubs_42 Posted January 11, 2010 Author Posted January 11, 2010 I am really happy with the last red guitar you sold me. Hmmm...if I hang out long enough, maybe just maybe...Oh did I type that out loud? That is a fine guitar and I don't know why I'm on this run of red guitars but damn. I have 10's on this guitar and they fell like 8's.
Punkavenger Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 I loves me some Prototype ... congrats! SCORE! SCHWEET! (Have you tried a A5 recently?)
