I'm shocked that someone other than me mentioned Bruce Thomas of Elvis Costello and the Attractions.

AWESOME chops, KILLER tone.

James Jamerson. Played on most of the Detroit era Motown stuff.

I wouldn't exactly call him underrated.

You're right, but the thread is "who is a great bass player we never hear people rave about". Ask 100 people on the street who JJ is, and at least 99 of them will look at you with a blank stare.

+1 on Mike Mills. He had some tasteful lines. I used to love playing the bass on Radio Free Eurpope in my college band.

Another vote for Mike Mills. One of the best!

Of course, by that standard, you could also get the same response about John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Chris Squire, etc... :P

Well then....if we're naming Jamerson, then we need to also name other session monsters like:

Carol Kay

Dave Pomeroy

Norbert Putnam

Neil Stubenhaus

Duck Dunn

Will Lee

Yeah, didn't mean to upset everyone... Forget I said anything.

Of all the people we are naming off, how many have owned Hamers?

Cliff Williams played a Hamer for a brief time before going back to Music Mans.

A few of the name studio players like Pomeroy and Will Lee have had Hamer 8- or 12-string basses in their arsenals. Entwistle also had a 12.

Dave Pomeroy's house burned down last year and he lost some of his massive bass instrument arsenal...offered to loan him my 8 & 12, if he was in a pinch. I lost most of my stuff in a fire years ago, so I could relate.

+1. Dude gets props all the time.

Whoever the Romantics' bass player was played what I think was a Hamer on an old MTV Saturday Night concert, and laid down some killer lines in "Little Latin Lupe Lu" which had been preceded by "What I Like About You" and segue.

Mike Skill slung a Cruisebass for a time back in the early/mid-80s version of that band. He wasn't the original bassist, but switched to bass from guitar when he rejoined the band right before "In Heat" came out (IIRC).

Lee Sklar, another fabulous bassist with great tone.

There are times when Sklar's playing has seemed a bit loose and his tone was sort of thuddy. He sounds right for what he is playing, though. That guy is an A-lister for sure.
