BadgerDave Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Harsh nasally mids that cut through a high stage volume mix but sound like $15 Chinese pickups in all other applications.
bubs_42 Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 The old one sounded great. I have no idea why they messed with them at all. But if you like Duncan Jb Pickups, I would try to find an old one. Try this if you wanna take a chance. I had a Norton and an Air Norton Combo an all Mahogany guitar with Ebony Board.

Yes, i should have specified - old JBs. I'll need bridge only for this guitar. I'll look into the Nortons. Thanks.
backinit Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Carvin M22T (slighty less output and upper mids)
zenmindbeginner Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 If you like Seymour Duncan JB pickups, then you'll love...a Bugseybucker or RTM from their custom shop. They are JBs with alnico II magnets and are Seymour's bridge pickups of choice in his entire line. They are pricey though... the RTM clocks in at a whopping $200. The Bugseybucker is $160.For $30 less, you could experiment with a Bare Knuckle Holy Diver which is supposedly modeled after a JB but has a bit more "openness" than the Duncan JB.or... fuck it and buy a JB and experiment with a magnet swap. Try a rough cast alnico II and then try a smooth one if you aren't squeamish about cracking a pup open and mucking around a bit. You could even air one of the coils and have your very own custom "half aired" JB.As a side note... the Duncan Distortion and Invader have the same coils as the JB just with a ceramic magnet instead of the alnico V and bizarre poles in place of the PAF style slugs and screws in the Invader's instance. The Norton is DiMarzio's answer to the JB but has a different inductance and DC resistance. It is peaked lower in the midrange which takes away from the singing "violin-like" lead sound of the JB but has a similar pinch harmonic response. It is wetter sounding than the dry sounding Duncan JB and doesn't have the same chime and jangle either. What is has over the JB is more low mids and a more prominent low end. Lots of "brown sound" from the Norton, it's a PAF on steroids without the drastic upper mids and sizzle of the JB.The JBJ's are wound by MJ who runs Seymour's custom shop and has some serious "mojo" in her winds. They are supposedly a cut above the rest of the JBs, but the new ones are made identically to the old ones. The JB is a pretty tight recipe, they still use the same wire, magnets, baseplates, slugs and the wind is the same. Seymour doesn't tinker with his designs and discontinue models like Larry and Steve do.I love the JB, it's a brilliant pickup. You have to tailor your picking attack to suit the JB. it likes defined and aggressive picking styles. An angled pick attack gives the JB an almost acoustic like chime on the high strings. I've found that regular spaced JBs on Floyded guitars sound the best. The high E string is way off from the screw and slug and has a slightly out of phase sound which contributes to it's attack. The B string gets some of this effect too.JB's need to be set up a bit further away from the strings then most guys like their bridge pickups. A lot of guys like to angle the bass side lower than the treble but this is not needed with the JB which has a scooped low end.
crunchee Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 It's funny...I'm not normally a fan of the stock bridge JB in Hamers, usually they seem too shrill and trebly to me and need the tone rolled off...but they sound pretty good in Wraptail models even with the tone control full up. Go figure.

Armitage Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 If you like Seymour Duncan JB pickups, then you'll love them even more with a lower resistance volume pot. It gets rid of the peakieness some people don't like.P.S. The Dean DMT Baker Act is an over-wound JB clone that sounds great!
veatch Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 Tanx, all. Some good stuff in there. And Dave, Mitch, Disturber, and KH GF:
KH Guitar Freak Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Seriously, I would want to try a JB with Alnico 2 magnets...

analogsystem Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 The Bare Knuckles Crawler had similar characteristics but was less harsh. That said, I LOVE the JB that came stock in my 90s Hamer Studio
Dudey058 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Hey Guys,Great topic and timely too. I just bought a 1996 Mirage II. Hoping for the Seth/Seth configuration I got half of it. The Seth in the neck and the JB in the bridge. Love the Seth and JB makes a statement, but I was looking for something more in line with the Seth. I thought about another Seth in the bridge, but then I saw this Description The Custom CustomTM is our SH-5 Duncan CustomTM humbucker with an Alnico II magnet for warm and smooth highs, more midrange, and a spongier bottom end than the SH-5. It's a good choice for players who need a traditional vintage tone with increased output. Comes with four-conductor hookup cable.Any thoughts on that ?Also someone mentioned the BG Bucker as a replacement for the JB.My BG Bucker is a classic style humbucker that was designed to capture the tones of the 60s-70s-and beyond. Basically the cool sounds I grew up with. The tones are rooted in the early PAF realm and the materials are basicaly what was used in the old pups. The sound is created to have an open, dynamicaly complex sound with chimey highs and tight lows. Also this pup was designed to have a very believable split coil sounds. Morris Davis Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I asked a similar question a while ago -- someone suggested I try the Rio Grande Texas (neck) and BBQ (bridge) combination. I'm digging it in my Monaco Elite.
hamer4ever Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Prior to what year would you call them the old version?

Interesting take on this posting and has possiblities. But guys, do you think to do that it might hurt?? Seriously, I would want to try a JB with Alnico 2 magnets... What about the Duncan Custom Custom ? I was thinking about this guy as an alternative to the JB.
