Sugartune Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Hi!I have a Standard Mahogany with the stock JB and 59. Looking for suggestions for replacements. Mostly interested in swapping out the bridge jb. Have nickle covers I'd like to keep, are they transferable? I play mostly punk and harder rock with this guitar, not high gain though. Love a nice crunch with sustain on the drive side and a good thick, but crisp clean tone.Appreciate your input.Cheers!
Bobby Marshall Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Covers usually only transfer for same manufacturer. Just buy covered pickups.WCR Goodwood bridge is great. PAF type pickups love standards.

Love a nice crunch with sustain on the drive side and a good thick, but crisp clean tone.A simple (and cheap) solution would be to use a '59 bridge. You'd have a balanced p/u set and the JB's nickel cover will fit. I like Duncan's '59 p/us. They are real "sleepers", and are great if you prefer a classic, non-distorto h/b sound. Also, consider a SD Alnico II or the Slash signature bridge. Sounds GREAT in mahogany guitars.
Sugartune Posted April 24, 2014 Author Posted April 24, 2014 I have 59s in both positions in my Studio. I do like it, but was looking for something different on this guitar.
atomicwash Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 Dimarzio EJ Custom for the bridge. I have one in my Phantom Custom. It's just right clean to grit. MF carries the covers. My 2nd choice would be the WCR Godwood.
django49 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I stuck a WCR mixed set in the Korina Standard.....Godwood bridge. Crossroads neck. Great combination.
Punkavenger Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 SH5 bridge sounded good in my Blitz (if you don't want to go boutique) and its great for hard rock ... and I've heard people like the custom custom even better. The Bare knuckles Mule is the best neck pickup I've ever owned (although I didnt like the mule bridge as much) and the Rio texas/barbecue set is a perennial favorite.I think just about all the WCR pickups are good also and Jim is a great guy (However he split from WCR and has a different company now so you might want to buy used on ebay etc.)
atquinn Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 You could do far worse than to try a set of Dimarzio 36th Anniversary pickups.-Austin
RichRS6 Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 I have a Lollar Imperial low wind in one of mine that sounds fantastic.
Sugartune Posted April 24, 2014 Author Posted April 24, 2014 Thank you! Some great suggestions. I'll need to do some research on them now.Keep em coming, if anyone has other suggestions. Cheers!
gtone Posted April 24, 2014 Posted April 24, 2014 You could do far worse than to try a set of Dimarzio 36th Anniversary pickups.-Austin^^^This, as I'm more a fan of DiMarzios than Duncans for the big-name pickup co's. The older Virtual PAF's that the 36th Anniversary's replaced were also very nice. DiMarzios have the double cream bobbins which look so effin' nice in a Standard also.Lots of boutique/custom winders out there that do great work too. I've had great luck with JS Moore pu's and he does double cream open-bobbin HB's also at very nice prices (<$100/pu, in most cases). No affiliation with JS Moore, btw...

These pickups are really good. gearwhore is a fan too, I believe.
BadgerDave Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Moderately priced: DiMarzio Virtual PAF, DiMarzio 36th (as have been mentioned)Boutique: Lollar Imperial, Wolfetone Dr. Vintage (or Marshallhead for slightly higher output), VooDoo 59, Fralin, Harmonic Design, WCR - all slight variations of excellence.
svl Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 WCR American Steele set can do no wrong. Have 'em in two axes (a '80 Sunburst and a mahogany Explorer) and they are tonal perfection incarnate.PA, when did Jim leave WCR? I thought he WAS WCR....
bubs_42 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Nope he left just recently. It is now Jim Wagner Pickups and the pickups are all the same. Jim moved "OFF THE GRID" to BFE out in the mountains.I must be the only guy on the HFC that completely dislikes the Dimarzio 36th Pickups. Bought a set put them a fantastic Vintage Sunburst and they didn't last 48hrs in that guitar.WCR you can't go wrong with, but IMHO Seymour has been getting it done for a long time. Try the Custom 5, I had one in my Hog Standard and loved it.

I guess he wound all the pickups at his house in the Sierras but the company was actually owned by someone else ... i don't know the details. He talks briefly about it on his Facebook page. Jim Wagner is his name, you can probably "friend him" and find out more if you're interested. I know he is still making pickups but under his own name. I don't think you can get the WCR branded pickups from him any longer and I don't know if anyone else is making them or if they would be the same.
bubs_42 Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 JIm winds ALL the pickups, the pickups are the same, website is the same, models are the same.
tbonesullivan Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 You could do far worse than to try a set of Dimarzio 36th Anniversary pickups.-AustinI put one in my diablo neck position. They are great pickups, and highly underrated, especially by the boutique pickup people. I think I have pretty good ears, and I think they sound nice. They also have numerous options for appearance and covers/etc.
gorch Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 I love the Leosounds.de Vintage Player Humbucker in mine. Built after a original 60s LP PAF, slightly underwound. They sound a bit wooden and dry. Just like a good dry red wine. To give it some taste.
