NGD: Bottom-feeding MIJ thing - NHC

Yeah, it's cheesy. It is almost so hideous it makes me feel sorry for it. But, this thing feels and plays REALLY good! None of that too-thin, wide-shouldered Charvel stuff going on with the neck. It just feels "right" in a medium "C" kinda way.

I am also a big fan of the J-200 stacked pickups and the variable mid-boost function. Schaller Floyd, no fret wear to speak of, and the body is almost perfect. I just picked up a 3rd J-200 for the middle slot and am debating the pickguard situation.

Late 80's Charvel Spectrum in Rainbow Crackle;

Now, the hard part is choosing which PG was likely on it stock. Was it black or white like all the other Spectrums I've ever seen? I have searched high and low and am not able to come up with a single pic of a Spectrum in any crackle other than Desert. Thoughts? How about a clear guard so the finish gets all the attention? I mean, if you got it.........

I went to the pawnshop to flip through DVD's with my kid as an excuse for a motorcycle ride as it is REALLY nice out today. I should have just stayed in the movie aisle I guess?

Oops.

I like it!

The dam pawn shops in the south metro have nothing except the cheap cheap stuff. squiers, cort, starcaster crap.

Pretty much the same story up north here - with the occasional exception. Hell, this shop even had a Mesa MK V head and 4x12 cab! $1499 for the head seems almost in the ballpark too. Then there was the set of Eden cabs - a 2x10 XLT and 1x18 - BOTH for $275.........

This is also the shop where I bought the early Seafoam Jeff Beck for $700 in near new condition. You just gotta go several times a week I guess.

no oem pickguard on that. total add on... at one time.

I dunno about that one Mr Murkat - here is the "normal" version of this model to compare it with:

apparently inspired by this Soloist:

I don't see anything cheesy about it. If so, then half the strat Hamer's I've seen are cheesy too.

Just about every one of my favorite guitarists had one or two guitars. Their goal was to become one with the guitar, so having 100 was pointless. I can understand collecting guitars, but I am more impressed hearing someone play the hell out of a good mid level guitar :)

Plexi guard all the way!

Posted

IF you feel the need to put a guard on it, go clear plexi (like Chris says) or polished metal!!!

Personally, I think it looks glorious (in a horrible cheesy way) without the guard!

I like the metal guard idea. Or even better, cracked mirror guard (ala the Paul Stanley Iceman cracked mirror tops).

Nice score, I dig it.

SWEET! Clear plexi guard FTW.

I concede and respectfully withdraw my prior statement.

Pickguard on a rainbow crackle finish... now I have seen it all.

Japan made Charvels and Jacksons are awesome. I have owned many of both and down to just one Jackson Fusion HH. 24.75 scale and 2 hums. Made in about 1994. The Crackles were cool!!

Most definitely. Even the lower end Charvel Model Series (3 and down) were sturdy and had good tone. They didn't take any short cuts like half ass tremelo systems and subpar necks. Unlike Kramer, some Hamer imports, Fender and others, I have never picked up a Charvel that felt cheap.

Anyone know what type of Charvel this is? One pup? Alder? A fender with a Charvel neck?

I got very little views of that guitar, but in 1984 they were all custom made, no model series yet. 1 Hums were starting to get popular. The guitarist most likely custom ordered it if he bought it new. In 1984 Poplar was popular along with Alder. It could be anything though. Charvel would do pretty much anything then for you.

I always liked the Charvel logo used here. Seems like they switched to a Jackson style font later and then went back to the guitar shaped Charvel headstock logo in the 2000's. Even their budget guitars from the later 80's have held up well. Nothing but respect for Charvel. I would take the above guitar and love it like a pet.

Me with a MIJ in the early 90's

+1 on the no-guard look.

If ya really gotta, use a clear PG.

Kewl guit, man! :)

Love it! The local pawn shop stocks Starcasters and other sub-bottom-feeder examples. Nevertheless, I walk over every Friday just to be sure.

I, too, really like the Charvel logo and liked my guitar ('86 Model 3). I sold it in a fit of combined (mid-90's) pointy-headstock hatred and "basswood sounds like crapwood" cork-sniffer idiocy. In reality, it played and sounded fantastic. I had put in an EMG SA/SA/85 setup with a SPC. I sold if for next to nothing...

I search eBay now and then and some day I hope to pick up a Floyded shredder - Charvel is typically what I look for.

Pppppppppfth, you won't find anything that DEMANDS big hair (and Sir Daniel's AquaNet) like this Hamer!!!! (All joking aside I had a Charvel neck for a project guitar, and it was really nice). When I got into rock guitar, the Charvels were already relegated to being pretty cheesy and not very interesting.
