tommy p Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Can anyone point me to a good place buy these? My new house is finally finished and it's time to set up the new music room.
geoff_hartwell Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Congratulations! I am a big fan of the String Swing. I have been using about 10 of them for 13 years, and they're super stable (find studs! haha) and the rubber doesn't wear out or damage guitars. You can get them a bunch of places, but here's a link to Sweetwater - $10 apiece: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GtrKeeperOak?adpos=1o1&creative=55397627521&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CO_E4L3zxcECFQIF7AodlXYA1Q Post pics when you're all set up! Studio Custom Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Diamond For Life sells them, however, I am not a fan of slat wall. I have seen slat wall delaminate and guitars come down as a result twice, in guitars stores. I much prefer 1/4" tempered pegboard, as it much stronger and allows you to move guitars vertically as well, to accomodate different headstock lengths. http://diamondlifegear.com/guitar_hanger.html
cynic Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 If you use the DiamondLifeGear slatboards, make sure the installation isn't performed by a moron Hmmm...drill through the metal or drill through the particle board??? I bet this made a racket!
dragan Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 When I put hangers on my walls , I threw away the little screws they came with and substituted hardened construction screws 3" long and made sure I hit a stud ( I built my basement walls so I knew there was a wood stud every16" ) .If I didn't know what exactly was behind the walls or wanted to put my guitars at intervals other than 16" oc I'd probably mount a board to the wall , making sure it was very secure , then mount the hangers to the board
chromium Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Gah! Those pics are terrible- feel bad for that guy.If I had to use a solution with partical board, I'd at least leverage the metal strip to anchor it (as stated above), or washers over the particle board. Not as flexible with regard to placement/repositioning, but I've been using the Hercules hangers (hardwood base) for upwards of ten years without problems. I pitched the little crappy drywall anchors and ran 'em right into the wall stud (also as mentioned). I'm too paranoid to trust drywall anchors for this.If you absolutely must use drywall anchors, check into the EZ Anchor ToggleLocks:http://www.easyanchors.com/Products.aspx?product=toggle&info=featuresI've mounted some large/heavy mirrors and on-wall speakers with those. No probs, but if those fell I could at least cope with it.
Kurt L Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 My DiamondLife stuff has been great and I know every screw went straight into a stud. I pretty much did a chin-up on mine before putting guitars on it. My wife finally talked me into taking the plunge a few years ago. As usual, she was right. Edited to add a cheesy cell phone pic...
tommy p Posted October 26, 2014 Author Posted October 26, 2014 The Diamond Plate stuff looks great, the finishes and materials are cool, and it's cheap compared to what I was expecting.Diamond Plate FTW! Thanks for the advice, guys.
Armitage Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Besides hitting all the stubs, some of the better slat board comes with an aluminum channel that goes in each slot, it spreads out the weight.
Thundersteel Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 I don't trust the Diamond Plate, as to me there are too many precautions that need to be taken. "Space the guitars X inches apart; keep the guitars X inches from the ends," OR ELSE IT WILL BREAK!Fvck that--I'm keeping mine in their cases!
Kurt L Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 I don't trust the Diamond Plate, as to me there are too many precautions that need to be taken. "Space the guitars X inches apart; keep the guitars X inches from the ends," OR ELSE IT WILL BREAK!Fvck that--I'm keeping mine in their cases!I can see where you're coming from but really, it's just a manufacturer telling you the proper way to use their product.I've had mine for more than 2 years with as many as 16 instruments on it with no problems. But I installed it myself with someone who really knows construction. It's mounted to studs, not to drywall. And I haven't seen anything like the pics posted above. Looking at those pics, something is definitely wrong. The upper aluminum channel came out. I don't see how that could happen if it was properly installed with the correct type of screws going through the aluminum channel directly into studs. As Cynic pointed out - the only conclusion I can draw from those pics is improper installation. Otherwise there's no way that aluminum channel pops out. And that's not the product's fault.Everyone should make their own choices. I'm just saying my system has been great and I'm glad I did it. No problems here.
cynic Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Fvck that--I'm keeping mine in their cases! Great advice for an OP asking about slat wall If installed correctly, the screws are going through aluminum and into studs. As shown in the photo below, the guy in the thread referenced above screwed into the particle board BEHIND the aluminum channels, using the metal more as a beauty strip to cover the unsightly screw heads rather than hardened structural necessity.

This looks great. Yeah, it's badass! If I had the space I'd get a second one... but then I'd want more guitars and I'm already more than adequately blessed.I'm fortunate that Mrs. L really doesn't care what I do to the man-cave.
HAMERMAN Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Kurt - that is one silly nice wall! Are those light up frogs on the ceiling???
Michael_B Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 I'm shocked that anyone wouldn't put them directly into studs. I guess they were thinking the guitar fairy would protect them.I'm planning on installing some slat wall at my new place. I've seen some really nice oak and oak veneer slat wall. You can frequently find the components on eBay or CL from guitar shops that are closing up.
Studio Custom Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 If installed correctly, the screws are going through aluminum and into studs. As shown in the photo below, the guy in the thread referenced above screwed into the particle board BEHIND the aluminum channels, using the metal more as a beauty strip to cover the unsightly screw heads rather than hardened structural necessity. Most slatboard does not even have an aluminum channel, see below: The wood is just for decoration in the Diamond For Life stuff, but as noted, it must be installed such that the screws pass through the aluminum and into the stud a minimum of 1.5" deep. Also slat wall with the channels is EXPENSIVE, a 4x8 sheet of tempered 1/4" pegboard is $20, one 96" strip of Diamond For Life slatwall is more than double before shipping. You can get the pegboard from Do It Best hardware delivered for free to you local dealer. Here is how it can turn out:
Kurt L Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Kurt - that is one silly nice wall! Are those light up frogs on the ceiling???Those are deflated balloons. When I go with my friends to the Austin City Limits festival each year, we fill a blue frog with helium and fly it over our camp to help others find us. Those frogs have seen Muse, Pearl Jam and lots of other great bands! They are just fun to have tacked to the ceiling. Help keep me in a music mood.
Michael_B Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 That pegboard set-up looks better than I would have imagined. Of course, I may just be having a hard time looking past that awesome wall of guitars.
Studio Custom Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 That pegboard set-up looks better than I would have imagined. Of course, I may just be having a hard time looking past that awesome wall of guitars. And that pegboard has two coats of primer, two coats of base color and was fauxed over, thereby eliminating the pegboard look.
hamerhead Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 If you do the pegboard thing, be sure to use quality hangers. I had one break and drop the guitar between 2 others and 'timmmmmberrrrrr'. Thankfully only some cosmetic damage, but a lesson learned for sure.
tommy p Posted October 29, 2014 Author Posted October 29, 2014 I'm not too sure about pegboard. I just lack confidence in it. I will definitely get the slatboard with aluminum channels to feel more secure, and I just think the slatboard looks better (no offense to Studio Custom, whose pegboard wall looks amazing!).
Armitage Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Slat wall is great stuff, IF you mount it properly and use a grade designed for the weight you're going to hang on it. There are different grades, as with everything, and if you use a lower grade one and have too much weight on one slat, it'll peal away and drop everything.
ib2010 Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 String Swing does a "hardwood series slat" thats very functional. Cost about twice as much as the base model, it comes unfinished, 8' wide, it's about 5 pieces of wood plus the aluminum channels, but not hard to put up once you get the plan. This is the cherry with "tounge oil" finish, if i recall.
hamerhead Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Cool piece, but is that 2 adjustments on each hanger? My OCDness would totally trip out.
