The Shark Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Honestly, I've spent more than "market" on almost every guitar I've purchased here. But I'm not somebody that waits for something to pop up on the forum and enjoys trying to beat everyone else to the punch or "outbid" them via PMs. I prefer to set my sights on what I want, offer more than fair money for a clean example, and pick from what is presented to me. I rarely every sell guitars, so I always feel like the amount I've paid (usually a bit more than market) will catch up to the market at some point. I've had so many deals go up in smoke because somebody makes a better offer after the seller says we have a "done deal". My strategy keeps others out of the mix. I won't be the guy that got the 4-digit for $1,100, but I do have a nice one that some thought I paid to much for. But that same 4-digit is now right in line in the market with what I paid, if you look at what the past few have sold for.
veatch Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 As opposed to a PSA, a PM response to a WTB would avoid the drama. If we were a really organized and benevolent community, we would have a pinned WTB thread that was cummulative and could be searched on first-in, first-out. Lot of maintenance, there though....
mrjamiam Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 If you agree to a deal, you follow through. This CL seller hopes he can get away with it because he feels anonymous. Or he doesn't have a shred of decency - that happens too.
tbonesullivan Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I have paid market, over market, and under market for guitars over the years. It seems to average out over the years. Like, I got the dead mint 1996 special for $550 at GC, but paid $750 for a much more used one from Dave's guitars. $750 is also what I paid for my 59 burst, which was a good deal. It was also probably 6 years ago at this point.Still, If I was in the sellers shoes, I would have been honest about what I found out, and tried to work with the guy who contacted me first. Just say like "well, I had a bunch of offers coming in a bunch higher, so I'm gonna have to get back to you once i figure out what a good price is".CL is pretty much no-holds-barred so if someone wants to go with the highest bidder, more power to them.
Sugartune Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 These scenarios suck, but doesn't it also suck to take advantage of those who don't know what they're doing? Sure, that's just capitalism, but so is raising the price based on demand. There was a Kijiji ad posted fairly close to me, about an hour away for a Korina Artist. Apparently it didn't work (Plugged in, no signal). He received it as payment for a contracting job that the person couldn't pay for in the end. He wound up with a bunch of shit that he sold and had what was owed back at that point. He didn't play and just wanted to get rid of it. Either make enough to buy an acoustic for his daughter or trade for one. He listed it at $375, I think. I messaged him to say it's low. He could do a LOT better. He said by that point he kind of knew. He already had a ton of response, most of them offering less, some at the offered price, some for shitty acoustics like First Act. People suck! I actually had a Korina Artist 90 on the way at that time and I could barely afford that (still owe on it, to be honest), and I really couldn't even consider buying it. So, it goes both ways. I think the other way mostly. Lowballers affronting the seller much more over sellers changing their errantly priced goods to match demand.
it's me HHB Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Nope. Sellers a lazy dick. I found those rio grande pickups in my junk drawer, took one google to determine my price

kizanski Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 You agree to a deal, you honor the deal. Any if this "maybe this," "maybe that" bullshit is just that - bullshit.
Sugartune Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I guess I missed that point. That the price was already agreed upon. That sucks.

MCChris Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Some of you guys expect too much from the scum on Craigslist. And an electric guitar is a luxury item. Life will go on even though you were not able to procure it for $500.
crunchee Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Its got usa written on it man! That won't stop some sellers from getting it completely wrong. Same thing with being too lazy to spell the brand name correctly, or at least correct it...even when it's ON THE ITEM THAT THEY'RE TRYING TO SELL, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR FACE.

Life will go on even though you were not able to procure it for $500.Muse, personally, I fully expected the seller to do exactly what he did. Once I saw that he priced it too low, I could have made book on it. So it's not necessarily that we expect too much from the scum on CL, but that the sellers on CL prove themselves to be scum too often. I'm the last guy to get up on a moral high horse, but a deal is a deal is a deal. Sure, we're talking about luxury items, and some of us certainly have more than their share of guitars, but that doesn't lesson the importance of honoring a deal. I just find this way of doing business offensive.
veatch Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 The anonymity of Craigslist allows being offensive to be a non-issue.
KofSeattle Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Apparently the seller had even given his address to my buddy for pickup at an agreed upon time. It was all but a done deal. He (the seller) is just lucky my buddy isn't one of the CL scum we all know too well and read about in the news. I think most people are clear on what to expect from CL. Kind of the 80/20 rule? Shake your head and move on right? F**ktards.
Hfan Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I've had great luck buying on CL. Got many of my guitars there. I didn't really steal any but got good to great deals compared to prices I see out there. And the sweet thing is you get to try the gear in person. No substitute for that. A phone call or two with the seller usually determines if you're dealing with a flake. They appreciate communicating with a relatively normal and reliable buyer as well. Met a bunch of pretty normal guys just selling their gear.
Brentrocks Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Apparently now he is rethinking the sale all together.Because he's revealed himself to be a cockhead and no one will deal with him now.A satisfactory comeuppance, I'd say.I gotta agree with chris on this one
mrjamiam Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Happens the other way around, too I guess. Just saw this on my local CL in a Marshall amp ad:"Update: You know, I am a very honest person and I am extremely respectful of your time. I offer good quality items and I live up to any and all agreements we reach together. In saying that, I wanted to ask the same in return. If I tell you I will sell you an item at a certain price, will be there at a certain time, then I will do it. If problems arise, and they sometimes do, I will contact you and keep you up to date. All I ask is that you do the same. If we agree to meet somewhere, please be there. I am putting this up because I just returned from a 160 mile round trip where the buyer was a no show. The buyer did not call and let me know they had changed their mind. Please do not do that to me. Thank you."

Can't even believe someone would do that..some people do suck really badly and bad karma upon them.
