What is the Hamer of G&L Strats?

Ting Ho Dung

3 singles. no superstrat or Floyd type. Also what can one find them for on the used market and availability.

What finish does G&L use? I see they have different neck profiles which I like. Which one is your favorite? I know it may not be mine but would like to know why you like it.

Anything else you can think of I should know about G&L?

I have never held one or seen one in person.

I got my Legacy in trade for a Carvin CT6M with SS frets and all the bells and whistles. So it was one poor resale value for another. Only issue I had is that the fretboard had some cracking around the inlays, which I had filled professionally, probably with ebony dust mixed with glue. Can't even tell the cracks were ever there now.

Count me as another huge G&L fan. I love the necks and the low prices used which leaves money for customization. The Legacies have swimming pool routes under the hood which makes any pup combo a possibility if you ever feel like experimenting without having to route out the guitar. I picked up a beauty from a fellow HFCer here, metallic green, #1 size quarter-sawn neck with locking tuners. Right now it has Suhr FL singles and a Suhr DSV+ humbucker in the bridge and I like them a lot. The stock MFDs sound great too but I like to tinker with the guitars...

Here's my '96 Legacy in a cool discontinued G&L color, called "tobacco sunburst."

I'd call it "barbecue (sauce) burst" if I was trying to accurately describe the color.

This one has what I believe to be their #1 classic "C" profile neck, and it's the best feeling guitar neck contour/radius/thickness wise that I've ever put my hands on.

The G&l basses are the fattest things going. Those big pups like Dave's above are insane

I still have yet to play/own one of the G&L active basses. I had an SB-2 for a while, and it was NICE, but the neck was a bit too narrow. Probably should get an active version one of these days. But can't decide whether I want a 4 banger or a 5 banger.

L2K is the way if you want a wider neck.

Yep, they'll spoil you for just about anything else. MASSIVE tone. Try'em in a semihollow ASAT body into an Eden rig. Whooee! I couldn't believe how easy it was to sound good when UPS delivered this to my door.

That said, for overall comfort and ergonomics, I agree with Elduave for an L2000. Same exact electronics as the ASAT bass, but the ASAT's standard neck is like a J-bass profile (probably to minimize neck dive). Kind of cool, but with my short arms I would have been better off with the L2000.

Agreed--that's why I own two!

True, but you can also get it with the smaller #8 neck, which is the same size as on their JB-2. My L-2000 has this neck, and it's very comfortable.

Here's an obligatory pic of the Legacy I had:

Older ones might have the three-bolt neck with micro-tilt. Otherwise 4-bolt. Not compatible with Fender or other necks, not supported on the aftermarket.

Musikraft makes compatible necks under the "JNL" name: https://musikraft.com/product-info.php?pid196.html

Also, I'm not a fan of the tinted look on G&L necks... But that said, I've owned three G&Ls and still own two. The PTB controls are awesome and the thing is build to last.

An Invader XL is on my one-that-got-away list.

Quite possibly the shexiessst bass I've seen in a long time!

Also, ten thumbs up on Musikraft stuff - they are easily the BEST replacement stuff out there.

G&L makes nine different Strat-shaped guitars featuring:

  • Three basic models, Legacy, S-500, and Comanche
  • Each model available in solid or semihollow body
  • Six different pickup types, some unique to G&L
  • Solid or semihollow bodies

Pickup types include:

  • Strat-size alnico single coils
  • G&L MFD (magnetic field design) high output Strat-size pickupsG&L's own handwound Strat-sized alnico pickups
  • Dual-blade Strat-sized humbuckers
  • MFD Z-coil pickups, which cop a single coil sound while being dead quiet
  • Various conventional humbuckers for HH and HSH configurations.

Body woods are usually ash and alder, necks are rock maple available as quartersawn, fretboards can be maple, rosewood, or ebony. Several neck profiles are available at no extra cost.

Is there anything in particular you're looking for, or notice anything in the descriptions that piques your interest?

I still own a G&L Legacy (basic Strat type), ASAT Classic Semihollow, and a 1986 Lynx bass. I've also owned two other basses, two other ASATs and another Legacy (the dual-blade PU Special, which I really miss).

I was looking at the tone system you noted. Also interested in their #1 neck (I think). Alder or swamp ash is fine. Looking at the classic 3 burst (tobacco maybe?) Saw one on Reverb that looked reasonable. https://reverb.com/item/1199505-g-l-legacy-2014-sunburst-tobacco

Something about most of the G&Ls I've been looking at though. Their colors aren't very pretty. At least to me. I looked on ebay for at least an hour and only found 2 or 3 to click on just by first appearances. Specs on the USA Legacy's all were pretty similar.

ETA: Thanks for posting all the info for me.

I have that same one..bought new in 2008 or so but with the gun oil tint neck. 12" radius neck (their #1 I think)..nice and chunky. The thing is like a brick shit house..solid build..the trem is very stable..push in trem arm with a plastic tipped set screw ..great idea there. The trem is just robust and stable..mine floats as per their specs and is great for using the palm of your hand for a little trem action. I have considered selling it but I break it out and say no way.

That one you linked looks like a very good deal for a like new one. Oh, I like the PTB tone system they use..and the headstock has a nice nipple for those of us who like nipples (what's not to like).. I like Fender Strats and I like this G&L..if this makes sense, the Strats are softer, more feminine the GL is more manly..brick shit house etc etc..

That looks like Fender's Sienna burst but nicer..my Legacy is a Tobacco burst but is like the one linked on reverb above..more brown and black.. I'd trad for your color in a minute..

Here's a shot of the whole instrument--clear orange over ash, scrape binding, fretless ebony fingerboard with fretlines, and matching clear orange headstock.

I would have loved a Monaco bass, but I wanted fretless, and got this one for $899.

This one should be in this week "for store stock."

Hopefully I won't get into too much trouble when I "work a deal" for it...

ASAT Special Deluxe.

It's an ASAT Deluxe, but with MFD soapbar pickups (the "Special" part) instead of humbuckers. It doesn't have its own page on the G&L website right now. Dave's also appears to have the optional belly cut.

That's bad-assed Dave. What model is that?

I love the look of that "binding". I like it better than real binding actually.. it is the deal where they mask off some of the finish right?
