crunchee Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 No affiliation. $1495?!? Seriously? Was this thing owned by Elvis, or what? http://davesguitar.com/products/klon/centaur-overdrive/
Jakeboy Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 That is what they go for. I have a great clone that I paid 1/10th of that .....I do dig the Klon thing. Especially cleanish with a little hair. That is what they go for. I have a great clone that I paid 1/10th of that .....I do dig the Klon thing. ARM OF HAMER Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Well I know a bargain when I see one. ....................hell look at all these prices!. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1311.R3.TR3.TRC1.A0.H0.XKlon+Ce.TRS0&_nkw=klon+centaur+pedal&_sacat=0
kurtsstuff Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 I was gonna say...that's on the low side these things bring..Guess I said it huh??
Jellyfish Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Pricing of the original Klon pedals has truly gotten out of hand... Even more so since the (relatively) affordable "KTR" version was released. No wonder there are so many clones around and DIY-ers are taking matters into their own hands. Here's one I built a while back; sounds sweet and the total cost of materials was about $70.
santellavision Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 I sold one of mine a few years ago for $700. I should have held on to it!
Hbom Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 The cheap little Soul food does a good enough job for the crappy guitar player that makes noise in my basement.
crunchee Posted December 20, 2015 Author Posted December 20, 2015 "What the hell is an Aluminum Falcon?" Sorry, couldn't resist with all the Star Wars hype lately. Thanks for the info, I'm gonna have to check it out!
JES1680 Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 Yeah it's crazy. I bought a Klon years ago for less than $400. It really is a great pedal and works especially well with blackface era Fenders. Thought I'd never sell it.Heard about a local guy that builds clones, had him do one for me. A/B'd it and there was no difference. I put mine up for sale about where DGS has that one and it was snapped up locally within 24 hours. I've also since picked up a Soul Food, other than a little low end loss, very close, for for what $60?
hamerhead Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 So what's so special about the Klons? I've never heard one (that I'm aware of).

Never2Late Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 I keep seeing these Klon threads pop-up now and then, mostly filled with posts by people who are jealous that they don't have one to SELL. Okay - you trudge-off to your basement and solder-together something that no one has ever heard before, and sell it in limited quantities then.....I don't begrudge people who are chasing a tone I can't really 'hear' or appreciate, but are willing to spend big-dollars for. Some people here pay big dollars for custom Huber guitars, and claim they can 'hear' the difference over a custom Hamer - yea, whatever....Joe Perry and Warren Haynes have Klons on their board, and swear by them - so do other big-name guitarists who are currently filling stadiums. That's why these boxes command north of $1,500 each - if big rock-stars, whose 'ear' is much better than mine swear by them, I'll go with that. If the tone wasn't 'there' to begin-with, why are SO MANY people building clones of the darned-things? Inquiring minds want to know.....

Not my cup of tea - I like more "heavy" sounds, a Klon is about subtlety. Some people hear that sound, and they "get" what a Klon brings to the table. Okay....I have a good friend who is part-owner of Celestial Effects here in MA, and his lead design Engineer has a Klon on his board. In MA, you could get Klons pretty easily until their popularity took-off (rock-stars started to use them religiously), since the guy who made them is out of Boston. They were floating around until the prices went crazy, and that's when the "Klon Drama" reached critical-mass.....seems everyone 'loves' the Klon, until they couldn't afford one. THEN people started to bitch about them. This isn't about the merits of the Klon 'sound', its about people not being able to get on the bandwagon and BUY one, nothing more....its become a high-dollar status symbol, like having a Dumble amp. If 'everyone' could afford one, you betcha we'd all buy one just to hear what all the drama is about, and there'd be a lot LESS bitching.
Studio Custom Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 To pay that much for a pedal is ridiculous in my opinion, you can buy a used Axe Fx for that kind of coin. If you play for a living and it's a business expense, ok, but don't tell me your neighbor who came to your open mic night blues jam could hear the difference.

Yeah, but then you could say that about every piece of gear I own It's up for each person to draw that line for themselves regardless of what anyone else might think. - Austin

Right now, for overdriven sounds I'm happy with my Tim pedal. For leads, I like some nice fuzzy sounds. Sometime though I'll try a good copy to see what the fuss is all about.
crunchee Posted December 22, 2015 Author Posted December 22, 2015 Funny how Dumble got mentioned, IIRC, apparently both Dumble amps and Klon pedals have 'gooped' circuits. Coincidence? Secret sauce?
