HSB0531 Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 What 4 digit did he say he was going to send you?? Did he at least send pictures. Not that pictures are worth anything, but... At least you'd have a visual.

That seems like the way to deal with him to get the gear in the first place. If he has (or has a line on) something you want, and you have to deal with him (i.e., can't find it yourself on cl or pawnshop ads), go out there with your money and make him produce. If his bloodhound ways turn up good gear (not stolen, which seems like a possibility given his history), it's worth something for his services, but you can only get so ripped off in person with the gear present. Actually, that could be pretty ripped off if he turns straight up criminal and robs you, but you'd be in a great position to make a police report.
Boomerang~Junkie Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 You could find him and "collateralize" his little pooch . . . .
sled Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 What if you contact the police in LA. You must have some written documentation, emails, money transfer. Did you specify what the money transfer us for? Do not let this guy off easy.
mc2 Posted March 9, 2016 Author Posted March 9, 2016 Meaning data on where they were posted from? The photos he emailed my friend (another HFC member BTW)) that were forwarded to me, were from the original CL ad....meaning he lifted someone else's pics because he didn't even HAVE the bass he was selling yet!! Like I said, he spots stuff to flip. He texted me a few pics after I deposited all the money in his account and he had gone and actually picked the bass up. A third HFC member had emailed me by then, asking if I had a spare B8S to sell...and I said I had just bought one. He asked if it was the one on CL in L.A. and sent me the original CL photos.....the identical ones this guy used to sell me the bass!! Typical of his M.O. .....but I DO know where he lives. Like I said, I KNOW the guy for 15 years. He is just on the opposite coast.
donner Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 … one of the greatest, unsolved criminal cases in Hamerland! We stay tuned! Great supsense in here. Keep on rocking, mc2!
crunchee Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Hope it all works out for you, but geez, you DID know his M.O. already...

mc2 Posted March 9, 2016 Author Posted March 9, 2016 UPDATE: So, when this clown refused to ship the bass, I said "then deposit my $2580 back into MY bank account at a local Chase Bank" and I gave him my account number. I figured that, since he had me deposit my cash into HIS bank account at BofA, he could send it back the same way. Today, I get a USPS Express delivery. He returns $1508.75 of my $2580. An itemized crazy note...in Charles Manson-like handwriting... says he deducted: $35 for gas....???? Must live far from his BofA branch...he could drive to Mexico for that much. $11 for packing materials?? He didn't ship me the bass, so WTF ?? $22.95 for the USPS Exprss postage?? When depositing the $$ in a local Chase Bank would have been free. $3 for two postal money orders?? Again, no charge if he deposited the money in a local Chase Bank to me. ......and he is "KEEPING $1000 AS A NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT ?!?! OK. As the saying goes, "Don't get mad, get even." 😡😡😡
Biz Prof Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 You just can't make this sort of shit up. Tony Babylon (a preposterous pseudonym) must be the Sith apprentice to the late Emperor Ed Roman.
ARM OF HAMER Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 I could suggest something for you ..........................but it wouldn't be legal.
sw686blue Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 Can't you get in touch with a couple of guys with baseball bats and nothing to lose? Baseball bats and kneecaps don't go well together.

Studio Custom Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 He realizes over $1,000 is a felony so he itemized to get below that amount, he's not as crazy as you think.

killerteddybear Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Was a non-refundable deposit specified as part of the deal?

You're giving him more credit than he deserves. California considers $950 or more "grand theft" which can be prosecuted as a felony. At the federal level, "$1000 or more" is a felony, not "more than $1000".

Uh.....Yes he is because he stupidly kept the $1000 and then nickel and dimed the itemized extra $71.25 to put himself just over the felony minimum 😀 Teddybear...No, there was never any mention of a non-refundable deposit. This is some clown who is not a business and flips guitars from his house.
sled Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 I would talk with the local authorities. You could learn a lot from them and your information may be what they need for some unrelated deals.
mc2 Posted March 22, 2016 Author Posted March 22, 2016 Score in ne for the good guys!! The B8S JUST arrived after a couple weeks are jerking around. An old friend who I hadn't spoken to in DECADES got in the middle of this shitstorm to straighten it out. I inew hin back when I was a radio DJ and musician living in Rochester, NY. He owned a music atore and was actually one of the original half dozen Hamer dealers. My friend still has a Standard in the SN#O30 range that he bought new there and I don't think that was the first one the store sold. Anyway, my phone rings a few days after the initial nightmare and I hear "Is this Jon "the Midnight Mayor"? My old on-air radio name.....I ask "Who the hell is THIS????" Turns out it is my old friend, who moves to Hollywood in the early 80s, ran a guitar shop there for some years and ended up embedded in the whole music scene, managing Poison and other hair bamds of the 80s. I actually had met te B8S seller, Tony, thru this guy back in the late 90s. So.....with my running the CraigsList ads after getting burned...and the bass being listed as "stolen" with the SN# radioactive....this guy got called for advice. He decided that I was in the right and helped get the deal, done. The really screwed up part is my old friend's wife had passed away the day before and he actually was making calls and texts while making funeral arrangements and on the day of her funeral to get my deal done. Unbelieveable. But the bass has arrived. An amusing aside was the three very large bikers I had sitting at a bar down the corner from the seller's house the day this mess was all being worked out. Always good to have a backup "Plan B." 😀
Drastion Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Real glad it worked out for you. It's terrible the kinds of things people will do when they think they can get away with it.
