Hbom Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Here's another one of those fantastic Hamers that I could never justify hiding in my closet. But God would it be fun to have. http://www.ebay.com/itm/172300431263?ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1436.l2649

chromium Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 That works out to roughly $666 per string! Whoaaa

mc2 Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 The cord/breakout box to use it as a Quadbass are impossible to find. I think mine and one other 12-knob Quad still have them. This is the one directly next to mine in SN#...so from the pics and knowing it was built with mine, the neck profile it likely a hard V shape. Just FYI. So.....I guess mine, having all the needed parts/cod/nterface box and being a burst...plus having been owned by original owner, Eric Johnson's producer....MUST be worth at least $10,000 ?? 😀😀

If mc2 and hamstd would combine their collections it would make one great Hamer museum.
mc2 Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Peter (Hamstd) has a waaaay nicer collection -- plus I think he still has Nancy Wilson under his bed from asking her to sign her guitar. 😀😀 I wish I could buy this other Quad to chop it into a DOUBLENECK with a Hamer Special !!!

Well thanks Jon.....I think you have some pretty nice toys around your place that many people have never seen yet!! I know you have shared plenty with me that are super cool!! As some of you know I love a good game of poker, so Jon, I'll raise your early sunburst 12 knobber with a pair of later 8 knobbers...... I do have the cable and box for mine. However I had a friend that borrowed the bass and he used the cannon output-split to 4 leads cord and ran it into 4 channels of a small 8 channel mixer. It worked just fine. That was the whole principle of the bass back then to be able to dial in the levels of the vol and tone for each set of strings. That bass on ebay is super cool. I would get it just to get the script logo with "QUADBASS"...... to me that is cool. I believe Tom's quad bass had that as well. Peter

cynic Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Why do all of these have the plug in what is traditionally the tone location? It's weird to think each was an afterthought?
HamStd Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Cynic, the X2N goes to the standard jack and the quad pick-up to the other (at least that is how mine are wired). In a sense the quad pickup (it is easier to see in Jon's pic the quad pickup) has its own "onboard mixer" to control the tones but you also have your standard X2N like any other bass. So you can have a very unique stereo+ effect. As for why it was on top, I think it would think it would be so you aren't carving out 3/4 of the back of the body to have a control cavity as I am sure it would rival the cavity of a B.C. RICH in terms of crazy wiring all around, but Jol or Paul Hamer are probably better to address the logic on that one. Peter
chromium Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Curious - how many pins does the cannon/XLR connector use? Hard to tell from the pic in the book (guessing five pin - four signal, one ground?) I think it would be really easy to get a cable and breakout box built for the one on Ebay. Might even open the door to some creative opportunities - like adding overdrive separate for each string (and/or efx loops), and summing the resulting signals back to mono to run thru a normal rig. I made something like that years ago for my Ric 4001 and Ovation Magnum - e.g. preserve fundamental from one pickup, and fuzz out the other. Fun stuff, and with this you could adjust that by string course. Craziness! That in itself kinda makes me wish I could rationalize the 8g. I'm not quite there, however
cynic Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Sorry Peter, I don't think I was clear enough with my question. I was asking about the plugs used to fill the hole traditionally drilled for the tone pot. It's like every one of these started as something else before someone said "hey, let's make this a quad...plug that hole".

Cynic- those are actually flashing LEDs to tell you when the pre-amp power switch (one of the two mini-toggles) is on. Guess this was used in lieu of switched jacks, which most other basses employed to cut battery power to the preamp. The other toggle (if present) is a 3-position tone switch. Here's a guts-shot of the typical setup there...

It is the signal from the everready bunny telling you that once it stops blinking its time to change the battery!!
cynic Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 I guess that explains why they didn't try harder to match the finish color. Thanks!
mc2 Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 The LED hole is actually smaller than a pot shaft hole....so they didn't just stuff the LED into an existing hole to fill it 😀
Steve Haynie Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Someone on eBay makes replacements for old footswitches that had odd connectors. It should be possible to get someone to build a replacement cable and box for a Quadbass.
geoff_hartwell Posted August 14, 2016 Posted August 14, 2016 This thread is Hamer nerd heaven. Thank You
