trem rods, truss rod covers, backplates & glutens

What happens to all these missing trem bars & truss rod covers & back plates. Sucked into The Blacker than Black Hole for Lost Guitar Parts in the Galaxy.  Are they lost in space. Just like Saturn, creating a ring around Uranus. Are they filling a hole in the Las Vegas desert somewhere in the triangle formed by Ed Roman's Grave, Jimmy Hoffa's final resting place and The Chicken Ranch in Parumph.( Nooooo,Hoffa's not buried between the goal posts at what used to be called Giants stadium. Everybody knows that ol' Jimmy hated cold wheather) and  

And another thing, everything seems to be Gluten Free these days,  Cheerios, Socket Wrenches, the undies that I bought last week at Wal-Mart.  

When all these glutens are ripped from their homes so all this crap can be declared gluten free, what happens to all these poor, homeless, hopeless, helpless & hungry glutens go?  Into Big Macs? Chalupas? that $6.50 pink, chai tea iced coffee from StarSucks? There oughta be a law, disturb the glutens and you go to jail.  With no chance for early parole, ya don't get out until you get some soul. (props to John Hiatt)

Vibrato bars, cover plates, cases, etc might be found in the same place where all of our missing socks reside.

What?  Halfway up the dryer vent hose (which, incidentally, is a portal to a parallel universe)?

Gluten?  Just the ballyhoo of the moment.  I remember one brand of paper towels proudly proclaiming that they were microwave-safe.

But at least some of those guitar bits have surfaced downstairs in Buzzard Gulch.  3 or 4 Strat pickguards that I have no idea of their provenance, a similar number of strat whammy arms and a Hamer warranty card for a guitar I never owned.....

i once thought that cats were micowave safe.  Well one time our Kitty fell into the ceement pond out back.t  We put him in the microwave machine to dry him off.  he dryed off allright. Granny used the same recipe she uses for possum stew.  tastes just like chicken. Cheers!

I don't understand it either. I've never once lost any of those things. I've needed them for my guitars :) 

As for gluten? I've set mine free. I'm one of those awesome fun Celiacs.  Not a hipster looking for a fad diet to be cool. However, most gluten laded product is junk to begin with, so it is actually good to go gluten free, it's just not good, bad in fact, to replace all the normal gluten foods you like to enjoy with their Gluten-Free versions. There is next to nothing in terms of nutrients, tends to have a higher fat and sugar content to mask the grossness of the blended flours they use (usually corn and rice, they're cheap, but better tasting blends have coconut/Almond/Tapioca flours).

I was in British Columbia visiting my brother in May and he kept asking me about gluten free beers that I've tried, and that there are some good brewers there with GF beers. I said they're all gross, please don't bother. He bought me 3 packs of different varieties anyway. They were gross. Tasted like there was a key rusting away in the bottles. Also, each 6 pack cost 18 bucks. Booze is pricey here, with the sin taxes and all, but it should be around 12 bucks. I drank one from each, even then I ended up cutting them with Smirnoff Ice ;)

Gluten only affects those with Celiac disease; otherwise, press on! Remember, when they remove gluten, they have to replace it something else, and it's usually less healthy.

My daughter (with a recent Dietetics degree) just flips with all of the gluten-free nonsense.

That is exactly the case. Any non-Celiac getting 'benefits' from a gluten-free diet is fooling themself  (in which case I suppose the placebo effect is in fact a benefit - if you think you feel better, you are better. Or something like that.). But then there was Atkins, South Beach, insert-latest-fad-here, etc etc etc and people always eat it up (get it?).

It's nice having someone in the family who really knows and understands the science behind this stuff, because some of it can do serious long-term damage.

A little off track but could you ask your dietitian daughter about essential oils that they're selling everywhere. I heard that they were called "essential" to make them sound like "essential fatty acids" or "essential amino acids" when that's not actually the case; they're called essential because they represent the "essence" of whatever the oil came from... essentially (ha!) marketing speak. 

I'll say that I do not know whether this stuff works or not. My wife thinks it's helping her with her indigestion/reflux at night. I just tend to think that it's another multi-level marketing gimmick like everything else that comes down the pike every few months,  who's right?

Also, this gluten thing... My sister says she has to eat everything gluten free. I'm not sure if the doctor told her that or if you take a test or whatever... I really don't know in her case. But, she refused to eat a 1/2" square piece of communion water at church because of the damage it could cause because it could possibly have gluten in it. Would that little amount really mess her up? Again, I'm gluten-ignorant. Anyone know?

I would agree the gluten thing is way overblown, but am happy for the two celiacs I know that have enjoyed the increase of products available to them.

That said, I do believe many (some?) of the people that stop eating foods containing gluten do genuinely feel better (not a placebo effect) but it's one or a combination of the other ingredients that are the problem.  For example, if I eat anything with sugar or even white flour my arthritis in my ankle goes from tolerably mild with smooth full range of motion to just shy of excruciating and very stiff within several hours.

Yep.  The whole Toadroller household is Celiac, gluten-free.  When Mrs. Toadroller is exposed to even trace amounts, she pays for it for three days.  Just handling her mother's old recipes, which had a little flour on them...  It's a zero-tolerance kind of thing.

Gluten is a protein that a celiac's body can't process and causes auto-immune issues (your body starts attaching itself)  The weird part is that the protein escapes through your intestines into the bloodstream (historically called leaky-gut) and from there, well, what does a rogue protein do to your body?  Everything from distended stomach to early-onset and type-2 diabetes to psoriasis to another 200 catalogued symptoms easily misdiagnosed (and for which a burgeoning pharma industry has pills with flowery sounding names).

My trem bars never get lost as I'D be lost without them.  So they get a place of honor

in the case/gig bag.  Truss rod covers and backplates get put in a zip-bag the day

I acquire the guitar, and the bag lies in the accessory pocket of the case in the unlikely

event I'd ever get rid of the guitar.  Climate up here in the tundra is such I need to make

bi-yearly adjustments so the covers are a PITA...

For the most part (and all people are different) the body knows what to do when you feed it a normal, regular 'well balanced diet'. You can eat anything (again, all people are different) in moderation. Nothing fanatical or geared towards this or that. I mean, if you're having predominantly chemical-coated processed foods, you're going to eventually pay for it. Sure, eat a 'dog every now and then, but always go heavy on the fruits and vegetables (because - in general - we never get enough of those).

Vitamin suppliments, oils, blah blah blah aren't necessary IF the food in your diet already contains them (again, more fruits and vegetables). Plus, your body doesn't always know what to do with them - a septic guy said he could scoop out handsful of undigested vitamin pills because your body is just sending them straight back out into the wild.

I recommend researching it on your own. Everybody is different. Everybody has an opinion (depending on personal experience or who's funding them). I gotta listen to my kid. She did 5 years and was into it, learning the science of how nutrients react in the body. I still eat garbage, but it's about 75% less garbage than before. Some of the healthier alternatives actually taste better (never woulda thought) and once you get started it can lead to just eating better overall and feeling better in general.
