hamerhead Posted January 14 Posted January 14 My buddy is out walking his dog and comes upon a yard sale. Amongst the ruins is this old POS....with a $20 tag on it. Realizing he has no cash on him, he sprints back to his apartment, grabs his wallet that contains his card so he can get to the ATM and back to the sale before it disappears. Apparently it was a slow sales day... He says everything in it dates to '67. I'm no expert on any of that, but the thing is disgustingly clean. He brought it over and - because he lives in an apartment - says "Turn it up". I did. OMFG. I instantly understood the Princeton magic. Absolutely glorious. For $20. 28 1 Quote
G Man Posted January 14 Posted January 14 You're friend should have immediately bought a lottery ticket, because you don't get much luckier than that. 3 1 3 Quote
specialk Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Why that stuff only happens to other people and not me… Congrats to your buddy! Buy of the year. 2 1 Quote
Jimbilly Posted January 14 Posted January 14 those stories keep me going to garage sales. I found a really early Magnatone solid body electric (like 40s or 50s) at an estate sale 20 years ago for around $300, saw it around 11 am, contemplated and called a couple of friends, went back around 2-3 and bought it, my friend sold it online for me for 'quite a bit' more than that. Apparently I missed a couple of lower value tube amps that had sold earlier, so someone else passed on the real treasure. I think of that everytime I pass that house. The only other thing I found garage saling was a late 60s crybaby for $5. And that's why I always carry cash I know a guy who once found a matching pair of blackface princetons at a St Vincent De Paul thrift store for a bit more than that, but that was quite a while ago 2 Quote
Dave Scepter Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I bet that that amp came from an old man that was not internet savvy 🤔 2 1 Quote
alantig Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I'd go $45 but no more - more than 125% profit is just greedy. 2 4 Quote
topekatj Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Those amps are worth their weight in gold, I have a ‘65: fantastic reverb 5 Quote
Disturber Posted January 15 Posted January 15 I hate your friend. And, I need to get a dog. So I can find these things. 4 Quote

hamerican gigolo Posted January 16 Posted January 16 The last BF Fenders were assembled in early/mid '67. My BFVC was made in April. 2 Quote

So much for fear of dessicated capacitors and careful inspection by a qualified amp tech prior to reviving a time capsule amp? 3 Quote

hamerhead Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 What is this 'fear' of which you speak?? Y'all are a bunch of quitters. Besides - he told me to. 4 Quote
crunchee Posted January 17 Posted January 17 (edited) I once got a bit of advice from a friend who used to frequent yard sales, flea markets and pawn shops more than I did...obvious stuff that is displayed at eye level isn't necessarily the best stuff, sometimes you can get really pleasantly surprised with what you find at floor level, room corners, and out-of-the-way areas. I got one of these at a garage sale. It was way in the back behind all of the smaller, lighter things on tables. As I recall, I paid $175 for it. 10 Quote
