What are you planning to do Monday? Woody Allen still plays clarinet in a Dixieland band at Michael's pub most Monday nights.

Monday is also Les Paul Night at the Iridium Jazz Club. Les is 92. I think he plays guitar.

I hope it's all ages so his wife can get in! (you lobbed that one to me)

These are ALL great suggestions (minus Stike's very funny comment about Sbarro etc.) and duly noted.

I am planning on hitting the Empire State Bldg. (thanks for the tip Chris!) the circle line boat (tho only a 1 hour tour) to see the statue of liberty, waterfalls etc. And I'm going to see Young Frankenstein, because.. well, ya *gotta* see a broadway play, dontcha?

Great to see you all and thanks.. keep 'em coming, if you think of more.

Somebody actually got my Michael Scott (The Office) reference?! It's amazing how many people don't get it when I post it in "what should I do in NYC?" threads, some folks get borderline violent.

Check out The Lakeside Lounge on Avenue B. It's owned by Eric Roscoe Amble, fun place.

Seeing Les Paul was my first thought about what to do in NYC. Les Paul gave us multi-track recording, and that has opened up more creativity for musicians than anything else.

If you are going to be on Long Island check out the waterfront and beaches.

Some nice spots in no particular order:

South shore on the Atlantic Ocean has some of the best sandy beaches.

Most popular beaches are Jones Beach and Point Lookout in Nassau county.

Some South shore towns with waterfront bar/restaurant scene:

Freeport - probably best seafood around

Out East has the Hamptons.

North shore the terrain is a bit more rugged, but has great views:

small beaches everywhere all along the coast.

Some North shore towns with waterfront bar/restaurant scene:

Bayville

Huntington

Northport

Patchogue

Out East has the North Fork with its wineries

Oyster Bay has Sagamore Hill

Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum

Centerport has the Vanderbilt Planetarium

At the eastern tip of the island is Montauk Point. It is too far for a day trip, but it is well worth visiting.

Agreed.

I had the opportunity of watching him play there in 2006 (for a two day business trip, I saw David Gilmour on the second day  ).

Les Paul plays a rather short, but really wonderful show.

Hey Pam, Dave's better half here. Saw your post and had to give you my 2 cents as I used to live in ole NYC. Pick up the Village Voice as soon as you touch down. It's where all the clubs listings are and is an invaluable resource for what to do in the city.

My money's on the food experiences in New York - best restaurants in the world in NYC, but they ain't cheap. Your credit cards are your friends!

Unless you're vegetarian (you tree-hugger, you!) you GOTTA go here:

My sisters both worked for this company. Their restaurants are fabulous (Tribeca Grill in particular) and lookee - they're still honoring restaurant week (which I think ends on Labor Day) prices:

My brother's a drummer (The Dictators, Patti Rothberg) and lives in the city with his family. If you happen to see either of those acts scheduled and decide to go, tell him I sent ya'!

Oh! And take a Circle Line boat trip around the island, and the cable car to Roosevelt Island. That should do it. Have a great time!

and don't ferget the jealously guarded socialite must_do: lunch with buzzy.

Elduave's other half here - I actually HAVE had lunch with Buzzy, knew him over the many years my sister worked for him at The River Cafe and The Water Club (he's the owner). I'd never heard that expression!

If you make it to Long Island, try the iced tea. I hear it's fabulous.

Don't miss the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island museum. I wanted to resist all the "tourist" traps, but it was a pretty moving experience.

Hi Pam,

+1 on the Empire State/Central park/Statue of Liberty stuff.

Tell us more about your Cylinder recording...not only do I still have a turntable set up, I also have a Edison cylinder phonograph (currently playing 2min wax)

Rock -on girl!

Mark.

Buzzy is definitely a must see! Frank, email me madamepamita at gmail dot com

wax cylinder recording: i am recording with a fella who has arguably the best (maybe because it's the only!) original acoustic studio set up in the country.

here's a visual of what an acoustic studio entails:

AcousticRecording.jpg

his name is peter dilg and he has an all cylinder label called "Wizard" - he has no website, but you can read about a band that he recorded here:

http://www.danlevinson.com/rgjb.htm

hopefully my saw/ukulele player and i will cut something good enough to put out on his label and then we'll transfer to digital for the masses.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone... i love them! i am compiling a list!

I think we're getting our Buzzys confused. Buzzy Fretts ≠ Michael "Buzzy" O'Keeffe.

buzzy's already confused. anyway, I had lunch with Buzzy just today! :P

Don't you have lunch with Buzzy everyday?

well... if you want to get technical.

let's just say that my last post is a rare statement that will be perfectly accurate no matter how far into the future you read it. I hope.

OK.. I just realized what an old timer i am... i remember Buzzy BEFORE he was Buzzy, when he was posting under his real name and was happy to start up a new account under an alias! why he would have needed an alias is... well, it's better for you if you don't know. witness protection program and all.

The Sbarro line was a classic Office moment. Micheal's fascination with Chili's also cracks

me up...

As for NYC? If you're at the bus station, I recommend no direct eye contact, other

than that I got nuthin...

I would definitely check out McSorley's-but you guys are selling it short. The one "waiter" in the entire place will ask you what kind of beer you like, light or dark, and then he'll bring you as many as he can carry. If you're not drinking, they will throw you out. On a weekend night, expect vomit in the bathroom, which is just cleaned up with sawdust. Love that place.

The perfect day in New York City:

go into an ethnic deli and buy the strangest looking beer you can find, just buy one and drink it out of a paper bag

Repeat a few times

Buy some acid

go to Mcsorley's old Ale House, keep drinking until it gets too weird Remember to order 2 beers at a time if there are 4 of you order eight or 16, and you'll prolly get 20

go to Washington Square Park and buy some shitty (or possibly fake)weed.

Keep trying you might find some real stuff (worst case find some jamacian dudes that are smoking and smoke with them)

go around the corner to where Electric Lady Land Studio was

weep for a second

walk down Bleeker street

smoke a bunch of cigarettes

hang on a stoop and bum spare change

hang on a stoop and give away spare change

jump the turnstyle on the path train go to Hoboken

Cringe when you arrive and get back to NYC fast

go to Strawberryfields in Central park

get bummed out by all the crazy addicts that live there wrecking the vibe

drink more funky beers (anytime you are walking you should be drinking strange beer, it helps rinse the acid through the system

do some heroin (everyone in NYC is on heroin) ((yes you have to shoot it, when in Rome...))

Get a hooker by the Lincon tunnel (don't worry about having a homosexual experience Pam, they are all men)

sleep in the Port Authority Bus Terminal (I can't beleive it's still free)

Wake up and either repeat what you did the day before (what could be better really?)

OR

Sell youself into a prositution or sex slave ring, whatever you're into.

Oh yeah, pee in the street a lot (like you have a choice)
