cmatthes Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 How this made the cut for a VH-1 Classic "Metal Mania" video, I'll never know. I remember the hair band stuff getting light years beyond lame, but I never saw this turd!Thank god for Kurt Cobain...The only redeeming aspect of this video is the blue/black zebra graphic '80s Phantom that the lead guitarist slings/solos with. In all fairness, you may not be able to get through the video to make it to that point, so look for it around 2:35 or so...

kurtsstuff Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Hmm..Back in the day we covered one of their tunes...."Hold on to 18"Or some crap like that....but...Was a fun song to play I remember..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3eXthIXUnE
GusS Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Black N Blue zulu phantom with stoptail/tom!!
BubbaVO Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Never did understand how you can try to come off as a bad ass when you've got poodle's haircut.
Armitage Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 The NEW "Ace Frehley" used to play in Black N Blue....
gatorbyte007 Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Yes that is tommy the new ace in kiss, Agreat guitar player. I found his Email a couple of years back and shot him a Email about the Hamer. he wrote back to say it was long gone. Seemed Like a nice guy for sure.
adgc Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 The NEW "Ace Frehley" used to play in Black N Blue.... because the original "Ace Frehley" was actually a...... Plumber! It's True (Tomorrow Show 1979): When Tom Snyder asked Ace if his costume was that of some sort of spaceman, Frehley quipped, "No, actually I'm a plumber." Snyder shot back, "Well, I've got a little piece of pipe backstage I'd like to have you work on." The inebriated Frehley replied "Tell me about it!" Too funny because it works on so many levels (and notice the"God of Thunder" had his thunder stolen). Klassic
Steve Haynie Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Those Black 'N Blue videos look like they were calculated right down to the last detail to fit the heavy metal mold.
jerseydrew Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 That was typical 80's stuff. Nothing wrong with that, those were the times. I actually loved the 80's and I personally think that Kurt Cobain RUINED Rock & Roll. At least the 80's had guitar solo's. Cobain couldn't play for shit. In fact, if Cobain didn't die, Nirvana wouldn't have been that big of deal. Yeah they were good, but they weren't great. And Cobain certainly wasn't GOD. Pearl Jam was a much, MUCH better band.Of course this is my personal opinion.

Of course this is my personal opinion. I enjoyed the 80s myself, but personally liked the Gn'R side of Hard Rock v. the lame makeup, neon colors and pouffy hairspray crap. Sure, there were a lot of great players, but that crap really turned me off to a lot of them. Tough to take a bunch of guys in matching white leather with pink accents, 4-5 cans of AquaNet, more makeup than a Catholic Girls' school dance seriously when they're posing and pouting and trying to come across as bad-asses! As far as your opinion that it took KC's death to make Nirvana a big deal, you must not have been really tuned in to music in '91-'94 . They were HUGE before he died...at the time, I believe they were selling at near U2 status. I agree that PJ was a better band, but it is hard to argue w/the consistent songwriting and execution. It was also cool that they made fun of all those guys in spandex trying to look like pretty versions of Dee Snider.

hamerican gigolo Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 I couldn't stand most '80's music in general, the Subpop bands spoke to me far more than the likes of Trixter & Jackyl. My vote would be for Tad & Mudhoney.
Siaip Ciuvas Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Sound Garden was better than both of them.heeeeeeellllll yeeeeeessss!

jorg Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Alice In Chains was my band of choice at that time.
kizanski Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Never did understand how you can try to come off as a bad ass when you've got poodle's haircut.I was thinking he looked like Eli Manning with a wig.
elduave Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 I dug Black N' Blue alot, especially the Without Love record. Chris, would you say the same about Enuff Z'nuff? They had neon, and hair, and all that, but sounded like Cheap Trick. Also, Jonathan Cain of Journey wrote that song you linked, and you're not a Journey fan IIRC.Different strokes.+1 on Nirvana being huge, and +1 on Soundgarden being the best out of that era (or at least my favorite).Edited to be less dick-ish.
Mindseyes Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 It was fun being a teenager when nirvana came out because it was OK to listen to and like them and all the cock-rock bands, unlike now days.If it wasent for old kurt i wouldnt have picked up the guitar........and +900000000000000000 AIC and Soundgarden were and still are the shit in my book!now if only the Nelson sisters would make a come back i'd be a happy camper!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cmatthes Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 I dug Black N' Blue alot, especially the Without Love record. Hardly pathetic. So Chris, I'm guessing you have no love for Enuff Z'nuff either? They had neon, and hair, and all that, but sounded like Cheap Trick. Also, Jonathan Cain of Journey wrote that song you linked, and IIRC you don't care for Journey, plus you where part of the skinny tie crowd, yes? Different strokes, man.+1 on Nirvana being huge, and +1 on Soundgarden being the best out of that era (or at least my favorite).I've NEVER said I didn't care for Journey. I HAVE stated that Steve Perry (the twirling, near-tearful, scarf-wrapped persona) annoyed the piss out of me, although I respected his talent. What I found pathetic was that whole image - definitely not what I considered to be metal. I'm sure some good bands did whatever the directors told them to do to move plastic and get MTV time, but at any rate, I'd hardly call that song metal. The bad-ass posing guys thinking they're all hard and $#!+ while playing pop stuff and wearing the pretty boy makeup was just a goofy thing for rock. It may have worked for the Crue (partially because they were more badassed than say, Poison), but it ended up being the kiss of death for far more bands from that era. Just look what it did for Billy Squier and Kip Winger (okay, not metal, but the same result).I actually wasn't exactly part of the "Skinny tie" crowd - I was more into the WHO, Zep, Dave VH, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Stones, Hendrix, Scorps, Pat Travers, early Def Leppard, CTS, old KIX, etc. at that time, but have always had a pretty extensive appetite for a wide range of music. Yep, I was in a band that played/I also liked the Cars, Knack, Elvis Costello, Trick, etc., but Beatles/Wings, Pretenders, the Cure, Cult, Clash, Let's Active, Pistols, REM, Smiths, U2, Queen, Jeff Beck, Al Dimeola, Knopfler, Chet Atkins, SRV...hell, I can't possibly think of or list everything I listened to on a regular basis in the mid/late '80s!+ 2 on Soundgarden. One of the coolest bands I ever got to see live.
Stike Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I kind of remember a quote from Eddie Van Halen about hair bands. It was something to the effect of how the way all the Sunset Strip bands copied other successful bands was similar to inbreeding, sooner or later you're gonna wind up with retarded kids. And I though Tuff were some of the worst offenders of weak ass hair metal but I think the Black n' Blue clip might take the cake. I'm all for a hot shit solo but I'm not sitting through some pussiefied, horse shit, shlock to hear it.
kizanski Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I'm all for a hot shit solo but I'm not sitting through some pussiefied, horse shit, shlock to hear it.Pretty much sums up the entire genre for me.

hrtatak Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I will take 80's music over 90's music damn near every time. 80's music was about having a good time and 90's music was stare at your shoes and whine about stuff because your uncle molested you as a kid. BTW No offense to anyone that has happened to.
