Jack C Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Looking for something that kicks ass with a hint of melody in the vocals. It seems like everything out there is cookie monster vocs or worse. I don't need Geoff Tate or Bruce Dickinson, but something with more of an old school Hetfield vibe would work. Considering that Metallica is the biggest metal band of all time, you'd think more folks would try the straighforward, growling vocal approach with actual melodies. I can't find it.Anyway, I like thrash type music - chugga-chugga guitars, double bass, all the good aggressive stuff. I'm currently listening to Shovel Headed Kill Machine by Exodus. It's great except for the vocs... Help me out.

silentman Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I was going to suggest some progressive stuff like Enchant, Threshold and Vanden Plas, but it might not be what you are really looking for. All three bands have great melodic singing and not too technical over the op arranngenents, but probably to far from what you are really looking for.

Yeah, power metal (which is what I consider Vanden Plas) seems to be where the good vocals are nowadays. Pagan's Mind, Symphony X, etc... (whoever, I wouldn't call any of these groups serious ) -Austin

I just want something good. It's not like I'm looking for something with great vox. I just want good metal where the singing doesn't ruin the rest of it for me. Shadows Fall is close I guess, but I just find their stuff kind of soulless.
Brooks Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 i saw headbangers ball the other day.symphony x had regular vocals, keys, shreddy guitar. seemed just ok to me, not great, can't really put my finger on why. maybe because it was just too fast (think dragonforce).machine head has a new cover of maidens "hallowed be thy name" that was cool. but thats not really new, is it?the sword is very old school sounding, the vocals aren't screamed/grunted, they're sung, but i still didn't like it. it was like a local metal band, not bad just kinda mediocre.they also played a new testament tune, which was pretty damn good, very old school metallica sounding. thumbs up.everything else new they played had the typical HORRIBLE vocals(lamb of god, pig destroyer, etc... yeeachh).ps- me likes the new metallica (haven't seen any videos).

The Stone Sour influence is apparent.

The Stone Sour influence is apparent.thats another video i saw. i couldn't believe it was slipknot! singing AND ripping solos, and the chorus was actually hooky. they've come aloooong way from "new abortion", ha.
Steve Haynie Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 A friend loaned me the new Saxon album, Into The Labyrinth, that came out this year. While not thrash, it is solid metal with melodic vocals. Nigel Glockler had to leave the band due to back problems, but Saxon has always had great drummers. If you listen closely the drums will impress you.
ZR Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Not sure if this is what you have in mind but I like Black Tide...a bunch of young kids that seem to have that hunger for the old school feel. They won several awards from various ppl like Kerrang etc.

They have two albums, the latest one is supposed to be the heavier one. Jason01 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I haven't heard anyone mention Bullet for my valentine yet, might give them a spin. Iced Earth is pretty good for straight up metal. Exodus' atrocity exhibition is just brutal-makes you want to punch somebodys mother. Machine Head has alot of good stuff out there. Sevendust would be a good one too. Gamma Ray is good if you can handle more of the power metal stuff.
lord nelson Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Mastodon has fairly clean vocals. Brent Hinds plays the coolest V I've seen. The last Opeth album has about 50% clean vocals. Testament has been mentioned. Get their Live in London DVD/CD. It's great. Jorn might be a bit too soft for you, but a great vocalist none the less

zorrow Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Have a listen to Force Of Evil. Very dark, with powerful vocals, great thrashy riffs and lots of good solos. Those are Mercyful Fate members with a new vocalist -- the guy has nothing to do with King Diamond. The second album, Black Empire, is killer.You might also want to listen to Crimson Glory. The Astronomica album (1999) is with another singer than Midnight, but it's very heavy and you'll love it if you like Judas Priest.
