Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Someone on here showed a picture of what looked like a wide clothes closet modified to hold guitars (with guitar racks, lighting, etc).I can't remember which thread I saw it in. Can you either post it again in this thread, or point me toward the thread that has the picture?...aw, heck: no reason not to throw this out to everyone:If you don't store your guitars in the case, how do you store your guitars? What's your method or plan if you have more than 10 guitars? More than 20? More than 30?I like the guitar closet, but maybe there's another idea out there.
JES1680 Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Who needs wallpaper.....Hell who needs drywall when you've got guitars. I put it under the heading "social experiment" how long can I go without my wife forcing the issue of finishing the basement. I like having the guitars readily available to play. I have a humidifier and de-humidifier for the different seasons. Sure they are better protected in a case, but I bought them to play.
veatch Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Safest in the case. They don't look interesting in there, but they're the safest there...

If you have an overwhelming urge to send it to me, I can pm you my address . . .
ArnieZ Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 JES1680, I can see why you need a helmet to play dowm there ArnieZ
DavidE Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 The Carvin and Reverend stuck out to me in that photo...Some very cool amps there too!
Brooks Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 that reminds me of the rehearsal studio i used to own in charlotte;we used insulation wrapped in plastic for sound dampening on the walls.lotsa nice gear, jes!
cspot Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Great ceasers ghost!! Looks more like a music store...
phoenix Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 I had a free standing one with wheels built that holds over 20 guitars flat in their cases. I waterproofed the plywood inside and out and had a Dampp Chaser piano humidifier installed in it. Lots of folks here have seen it although I dont know if I ever posted a picture. I mention it because it is free to anyone with a trailer. It has been sitting empty in storage for a few year.
HAMERMAN Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 >Someone on here showed a picture of what looked like a wide clothes closet modified to hold guitars That sounds a lot like one of the corners of Ceeb's music room.
Uncle Thor's Hamer Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 We store guitars out on stands or wall hangars. A good wall hanger that is screwed into the studs is totally secure IMO. A good stand is perfectly safe as long as the dogs don't go barreling through the room. I find that it is very handy to have guitars already out and available to play, rather than having to take them out of a case that is stuffed in a closet. The only guitars in the closet are ones that need to be sold. However, if I am moving a guitar downstairs from the music room, it goes into a case! I am paranoid of tripping down the stairs or one of the dogs pushing past me and knocking the guitar into a door hinge or other object that would damage it. When I am not in good control of the environment, such as at some practices or shows, my guitars are kept in cases rather than on stands.

It was beautiful....hmmm. Maybe it was when someone mentioned a Mockingbird or Iron Bird.Gotta do some more searching.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted February 19, 2009 Author Posted February 19, 2009 Found it. It was puji: That's a gorgeous storage closet, IMHO. Gotta have one built like it when we finally settle in one place. ...but I'm enjoying seeing the other options, so keep posting pics!
Stike Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 I started with some cheap run of the mill utility cabinet from a big box store and did up the inside like an Ultracase. The V obviously doesn't fit. The black smudge on the carpet is child damage, hence the cabinet

Our study is being converted into a kid's bedroom, so I'm going to need someplace to store by guitars. I've been looking for something like that that I could throw into the corner of our dining room. That way, I won't be leaving my guitars exposed and I also won't be pissing my wife off -Austin
cmatthes Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Hit an IKEA and you're set!Stike's guitar box looks even better in person.

Funny you should mention the Reverend, I need to recoup some funds and the Rev and my Hayseed may be on the block. The Carvin has to stay as it's the only link to my 80's roots.

The back wall is a piece of cardboard cut to fit and the fur was Spray 77'd to it and IIRC the cardboard was Spray 77'd to the back wall of the cabinet. The bottom is a piece of foam from JoAnn Fabrics and I think I used some adhesive for foam. The neck support is a piece of plywood and I just cut the neck slots out with a jigsaw. If you're feeling extra talentless and hacky just find a cabinet that will contain one of these.
ceeb Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 This is my setup. Nothing real fancy. I tore the deck off the back of my house, and used all 5/4 1"x6". Functional and rustic. Everything I build has a rustic element to it. I thought rustic was a style, recently I found out it comes from Latin and means "peice of crap"
Armitage Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I just stuff them on stands... lots of stands.
JES1680 Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Armitage, my wife says you make me look sane. Thank you!!!!!!!!
tomteriffic Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 Ceeb, I dig the fold-down workbench. Very cool. Nothing nearly so exotic or organized here, just about 3/4 of the guitars in the first pic, many of the amps in the second. There were another half-dozen guitars and 3 or 4 more amps upstairs at the time I shot this. The unseen wall is full of drums parts, stompboxes, etc., etc. I really do need to build some racks....
