Hamerhack Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 We recently discussed f-hole functionality.I wish Hamer would design a distinctive f-hole, instead of the traditional one on my Artist Custom. The 3-hole Duotones are unique, but they can do better than that!Has anyone ever ordered a custom shaped f-hole from Hamer? (Unfortunately I can't swing a custom order, but I'm just wondering if any exist). What guitar has the coolest f-hole?
serial Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Not really an "F" hole, but I think that the Rick slash/cat's eye is the only cool one out there.
cmatthes Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I'm a big fan of the Rickenbacker "Slash" soundhole, and also liked the Ric-inspired soundhole Gene Baker used on his original Baker USA models. That's the coolest (non-trad. version) to me.
Feynman Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I think we already discussed this, and I was outvoted. I believe the answer was Salma Hayek.
Bjørn M Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 D'Aquisto had some seriosuly cool soundholes, like: I also quite like the sound holes in the PRS SE Semi (it's very similar to Ricks):

atquinn Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I'm a fan of the traditional one's Hamer uses actually. The 3-holes look nasty IMO.-Austin
Willie G. Moseley Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Robin Savoys have a slightly different, therefore cool look, IMO ---no juxtaposed points in the middle, plus they paint the inside of the back black so the f-hole will really stand out.
BubbaVO Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Tres hoyos, no joda!Although a modified teardrop/paisley kind of shape could be cool. And yes....Selma Hayek without reservation.
JohnnyB Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Gretsch Synchromatic series. I have a little sunburst MIK like the second one: Linda Manzer has some creative f-holes, some in the D'Aquisto tradition:
Buzzy Fretts Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I knda like hamer's F holes. particularly in triplicate.
mc2 Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I've always been partial to my 60s Vox Teardrops style f-hole.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 A good friend of mine has a patent pending on a cat's eye/slit soundhole that improves acoustic tone. I don't know if it has been produced yet, but he is working with Jon Kammerer of Jon Kammerer guitars. I can't access the website at work, but I'll research it and post it after I go home tonight.
Tokyo Tapes Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 This one's my favorite. Kind of a take on Rickenbacker. It actually plays and sounds even better than it looks.
Hamerhack Posted May 20, 2009 Author Posted May 20, 2009 I knda like hamer's F holes. particularly in triplicate. Wish my Artist Custom had binding on the f hole (and the headstock)!
Armitage Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Coolest Looking F-Hole?Lindsay Lohan... before she got all skinny and dried up looking.Sorry, couldn't resist.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Here's the Jon Kammerer acoustic I was talking about:
Sam Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I'm not the biggest f-hole fan, but at least the Hamer design is subtle looking. The larger frilly/fussy designs have always been a bit of a turn off. I'm currently planning a custom Newport without holes (the order to end all orders! ), though I'd consider a three-hole arrangement (just on one side) or a cats-eye if the option was available. Anybody asked recently? Here's an interesting f-hole story as told by John Page (former head of the Fender Custom Shop) But, I do have a funny Rich Robinson story for you. As I said, Larry had been building his guitars, and Mark Wittenberg (RIP) was the AR guy at the time. I guess he didn't get along with them too well, although he never said anything about it to them. Then one day we read an interview with him. He's talking about his gear and how much he likes his CS guitars, and then says "but dealing with those assholes!", like we were a major pain, so needless to say we were a bit miffed. Now rewind the clock a bit, a few weeks earlier I got a call from our illustrator Pamelina about a paint job that J Black had ordered from her. She was confused. She thought he wanted a guitar with an asshole painted on it. What he really wanted was a guitar with an f- hole painted on it. She didn't know what that was, so I explained it to her and we both had a good laugh. Then, for shits and giggles, I told her to paint a guitar with a bunch of assholes on it and send it to J, saying that's what he asked for. Now, move the clock forward again to the Rich Robinson quote in the magazine. Since I just happened to have this guitar that Pamelina had just painted with all of these anatomically correct assholes, I had a bunch of the guys sign each one, and of course I signed the biggest asshole. My plan was to send it to Rich, "from all of the assholes in the Custom Shop". Unfortunately Mark Wittenberg was concerned that it would bring some grief down on him, so I didn't send it out. Just a little story I thought I'd share.
Guest pirateflynn Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Great CS story! I hadn't heard that before but I love it. I do remember R Robertson bad mouthing the CS in Guitar Player magazine and Elliot Easton replying in defense .. pretty sternly. Also, I dig your Custom Newport idea! I've often thought about it myself. Keep us posted!
