Creative clamping....

I use a fixture that I made up to get the angle right, and in this case had to reinforce the front and back with flat plates. The idea was to get the headstock at the right angle and route for support splines. Two tailpiece studs and a dowel give us an anchor for the clamp that presses the headstock into the break.

After clamping, carbon fiber chip holes filled with hide glue......

Starting to route for the support splines.

The fill pieces will be contoured to match the truss rod route, and fit exactly.

Greg you've done plenty of Headstock repairs. Do you buy into that a properly repaired headstock is at times better than before it was broken? I'm speaking along the lines of how the energy is transfers through the neck. I know my 77 Sunburst is a Monster and the headstock was a BCR Repair.

Indeed.

Sanded, ready for paint prep.

yeah... seems like someone got a little happy with the carbon fiber and forgot how to actually USE it. Let this be a lesson folks: if you've got an expensive guitar take it to a GOOD repair guy! An actual GUITAR repair guy at that.

of course the best way to avoid this is to simply not break the headstock off in the first place.

Obviously so. You're working at close to the speed of light. What kinda coffee you got in your tank?

I hardly have the 'nads to looks at these pictures much less attempt something like this.

My hats off to anyone that can breath life back into our instruments like this.

Another entertaining UnkaGreg workshop blog thread at the HFC Experts forum. Wonderful!

Hamer Workshop blog is for the new stuff.

UnkaGreg cares for the used stuff - right here at the HFC.

Is there any better place in the world than here? I'd say no.

Same here...the Orca greg repaired is a seriously vibrant guitar. Hard to say if the repair contributed to its resonance because Niks guitars are all killer, but damn, this thing is really a monster.

Physics just called to complain that BCR Greg had not only grasped her but had also briefly groped her.

I just found this pic on the camera.....I highlighted the three break lines in red so that you can better understand the size and shape of the splines...
