topekatj Posted February 10, 2021 Posted February 10, 2021 No Port St. Lucie affiliation. Would this baby be long scale? It looks cleaner than Grandma’s kitchen floor. https://treasure.craigslist.org/msg/d/port-saint-lucie-hamer-monaco/7273095285.html Yo @Dutchman, it ain’t no Mlll, but points for getting close?
Peter Studio Custom Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 25.5 inch scale. I just bought one and it’s fantastic. That’s a good price if the condition is as good as the pictures show.
Dutchman Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 That is very nice, unfortunately we're in no guitar shipping season right now... coming from Florida to -20 really screws guitars up! Thanks tho !!!

rugby1970 Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 Yeah, it's close enough to be be tempted. It looks like a male guitar (as opposed to a female guitar, think Lucille). Maybe it I squeeze its aggots it'll turn blue?

jhn29 Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 I'm soliciting your advice: how would you buy a guitar like this long-distance off of Craigslist? Seems like a lot of trust involved with no "formal" protections (whatever they're worth and however well they work) through an eBay or a Reverb.

Use PayPal and select a credit card for your payment source. This way if there is a problem, first attempt through PP buyer protection, and if that fails, use your credit card protection.

The seller has to weigh opening himself to the potential for a "six month free trial" where it can be returned for a refund, possibly after being abused, broken or modified. Unfortunate......I have two out of state would be buyers now---Complete strangers (who may or may not have any established "reputation") who would love to have me ship out a moderately expensive guitar. Meanwhile, if they send funds "friend and family", they have no protection. As always, trading here is great. Long distance on Craigslist? Not so much. That said, I have sold multiple guitars to people who have had a local friend show up with cash.
jhn29 Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 Thank you django49 and gtrdaddy for the advice. HFC has been a great resource (my few postings don't reflect how often I'm here). I didn't realize PP was an option with protections for seller and buyer, though I assume the seller pays some fees. I'll explore that more. Not sure what you mean by the "six month free trial" unless that's built-in to using PP. I've purchased off HFC and it was a solid experience. There seem to be a few too many barriers to purchase long-distance off CL, but I'll see. (AND let you know if it goes through!)

According to my understanding of the current PayPal rules buyer has 180 days to complain/return anything they buy for any reason and with almost no rebuttal from the seller. Good coverage for the buyer but leaves the seller wide open for FO's. "I've purchased off HFC and it was a solid experience." Absolutely!
jhn29 Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 Hbom, thanks for that PP information, pretty amazing really, though I see the leeway for someone to take advantage of it. Back to the Monaco: I wish I were a few hours away--it would be a no-brainer. Instead, I'm 22.5 hrs./1560 miles and, currently, 83 degrees away (it's -1 in MN where I am). Sigh...

Thanks tho !!! Wow... just read some horror stories about shipping guitars in the winter. Been eyeballin' a couple too, hate for them to become instant relics with finish cracks. Heard you can let them sit for 24 hours in the box unopened and they'll be fine. Anybody here have personal experience, especially with a high end model ? Just seems scary to take a chance on that much cash and no guarantee that it will still be listed when the weather breaks !!
jhn29 Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 I have done the 24 hour wait with guitars shipped from warmer climes, with success, keeping the entire box unopened. Not knowing better, now I would double that to be on the safe side, but maybe it doesn’t matter at some point. My first Monaco III I purchased through Dave’s guitar shop in La Crosse, many many years ago. He did the 24 hour wait plus, and we opened it together. No problem. Funny, but that day is still memorable, seeing the natural spruce top and gold hardware lying in the open case, on the floor.
dhuber Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 I'm pretty sure someone on this forum was looking for one of these a few months back. There does not seem to be as much appreciation for the Monaco as the Monaco III. I like them both.
duncans Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Yes I was. Went a completely different direction tho'. Beautiful, well made guitar. A lot like my PRS C22. It might be going, haven't decided for sure yet.
