BTMN Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 With the recent passing of Steve Albini I am reminded that I have never heard the infamous reworked version of the first album. Anyone care to help me find a copy of my own? 🤓 Quote
bry4321 Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 I don’t have it but it’s on YouTube if that helps. 2 Quote
BTMN Posted May 9, 2024 Author Posted May 9, 2024 So basically I have been totally misinformed and now understand even more why I couldn’t find a copy anytime I half remembered to look for it all these years. 🫣🤔🤓 1 Quote
mathman Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 I have it downloaded in a couple of versions. Happy to share with anyone. It rocks! 2 Quote
mathman Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 Just to clarify, the in color version. the first album rocked that way and didn’t need the albini method… 2 Quote

I’ll try to give a listen to the other version but that first one was magical. 2 Quote
Disturber Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 I have the In Color re-recorded album. Someone here sent it to me. It did not have the best sound quality, so I did a mastering of it and now it sounds pretty good. If anyone wants a copy gimme a holler through the p.m. 3 Quote
Cboss Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 What is different about this version compared to the one we all know? Quote
cmatthes Posted May 10, 2024 Posted May 10, 2024 My first introduction to Steve Albini…back in the ‘80s. 5 1 1 Quote

RobB Posted May 12, 2024 Posted May 12, 2024 That had to be one of the last recordings with Bun? I like the re-do. A little less polish. I had to assign its own eq profile for the Music player, which helped. 1 Quote

RobB Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 (edited) Well, they still haven’t recovered since he, “retired.” An important part of their sound disappeared. Edited May 13, 2024 by RobB 3 Quote
bubs_42 Posted May 15, 2024 Posted May 15, 2024 (edited) Well, they sound different, but still damn good. My 11 year old daughter loves Cheap Trick, but she hasn’t come around to the old stuff. She loves the post Bun E music. Her favorite CT Song. Edited May 15, 2024 by bubs_42 4 Quote

The Band wanted something else, and it’s very possible that they had a different vision and after it was done they decided that “OK maybe we were wrong” and didn’t release it. Albini just captures what the band sounds like or what any band sounds like in the room at that moment. I’m interpreting that he didn’t really have a sound like some producers have. His sound is like listening back to yourself, if you hate your own voice you’re not going to like what you hear. Personally, I think some of them are great, some of them aren’t but at least we have the option of listening to the one we want to hear. I have really enjoyed listening to Bun E’s Basement Tapes on YouTube, and hearing those live performances and how they sounded gig to gig. https://www.youtube.com/@BunEsBasementBootlegs 2 Quote
mathman Posted May 15, 2024 Posted May 15, 2024 I love the basement tapes. Loser is great. I saw cheap trick live maybe 7 times between 1978 and 1983. That live sound is what I loved most. 5 Quote
hamerican gigolo Posted May 17, 2024 Posted May 17, 2024 I have the late '90s self titled CT CD on Red Ant. It came with an extra promotional CD with 2 trax, " Baby Talk " & a version of the Move's " Brontosaurus " produced by Mr. Albini. 😎 2 Quote
DaveL Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 It’s a little murky but is pretty cool. Dig Southern Girls. I play the YouTube video of that song from the Budokan shows all the time and wonder why it didn’t make the cut. I want you sounds a little wierd… really rockin rhythms but the vocals have an am radio vibe. Interesting choice Btw. The Letters To Cleo cover of I want you is pretty solid. I could have a local bias. 3 Quote
Jakeboy Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 I flew home from LA last night on business travel and gave it a listen while on the jet. Raw and unpolished as I remembered, but also absolutely rocking. Love the guitar tones. Li’e @Disturbersaid, it does need a proper mastering. 1 Quote
