Feynman Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 I just couldn't pass it up - it's not a looker, but it has a great personality, and I think a little Goo-Gone and she'll be okay. I bought this simply to sell, so go ahead and cast your aspersions if you wish. I have always wanted to try one out, so I can finally get it out of my system while I find a buyer. My questions: 1) Is this an original case? It doesn't say Hamer anywhere on it, but it seems like a good case. 2) What would you call this color? It seems to me a "metallic dark red under a layer of grime," or something. 3) Anything look out of order (wrong pickups, etc)? Thanks!
silentman Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Dibs on the I fling poo sticker. I'd be interested in being the flip recipient if you think it plays good. The case is not a Hamer case.
Steve Haynie Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Buying something to try out for a while is totally understood.
gwayne Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Buying something to try out for a while is totally understood.Haynie says this best.
JGale Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 I don't understand. Everything appears to be in order here.
Rodan Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 That color looks like what they used to call black cherry metalflake.
specialk Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 I'm all out of aspersions, Mitch. Sorry. People who cast aspersions shouldn't live in glass houses unless they sin, or something like that.Looks like you found one of the rare Hamer's that was made in their Oakland CA facility, sometime between Arlington Heights and Illinois.I'd keep it if I were you (and invest in some cool HFC picks). But that's just me....
veatch Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 What's the neck like?Lou is correct - case is not original.
DarrenD Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Yeah I seen that one cali too....forgot what classified though. I'm sure she will be much pretty after the stickers are taken off. Cali standards don't get much respect when compared to their ebony/boomer brothers, They are still excellent players.
ton13 Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 1.My Hamer case have no HAMER logo too. cause Time to make it disappear. I think Original case Made in Canada.2.Black cherry Metalflake .3. I guess this Hamer start serial no. at 8.............may be 9 ( But it is quite difficult to No. 9.) I noticed from 3.1 Truss rod cover 3.2 Headstock shape However I will always love Californian.
Victor (Fret Friend) Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Can't wait to see it cleaned up. Can't wait to see it strapped to me
Brooks Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 what kinda doofus covers a usa hamer w/ stickers? is the raiders sticker on the headstock covering a crack?
Feynman Posted October 12, 2010 Author Posted October 12, 2010 what kinda doofus covers a usa hamer w/ stickers? YOURS is inspired art - this one, well, is not. is the raiders sticker on the headstock covering a crack? No crack - but after twenty years of desert heat, luckily the Raiders sticker took some of that tone-sucking logo with it. This will be a multi-day project, but here are a couple of shots of what I have so far. Goo-Gone == Magic. That last photo makes it look all clean now, but it's still pretty rough looking. The lack of light was flattering. Forgive my amateur Floyd blocking device. What's the neck like? After all my Cali reading here, I was expecting -really-shredder-thin, but it's not. I'd say it's on the thin side of medium I guess. The depth seems fairly consistent from the nut to the higher frets, and the center strip of the neck feels flat-ish, so maybe it's like a skinny D. I'm terrible at describing necks, but I've played much thinner ones than this and was surprised to find this one wasn't too thin. It's certainly more shallow than the vintage carve on newer Hamers though. I don't think I've ever had a modern carve Hamer, so I can't compare there. Ton13, you are correct - it's a 1988.
DaveL Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 nice job cleaning it up. I love goo gone. I just used it to remove some 6 year old sharpie mark off some kind of printed label. removed the sharpie perfectly and the label was unharmed.
harry65 Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 how dare you you fargin bastage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you're in for a treat mitch , my first three hamers were cali's with dots , with the right pickups it can be the most versatile guitar you'll ever play , incredible necks(like all hamers i've played) , enjoy bro..............
specialk Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Very nice cleanup job, Mitch. I am really loving that color!
Crwth145 Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Wow... cleaned that right up! How's the floyd workin' on that? How muchy??
ton13 Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 You have risen to solve it successfully. It would be useful for you to do exactly.
