Hamerhead's 77 Sunburst restoration.

Young Tim(Hamerhead) can give the backstory on this one. When it arrived at the shop, this is what I found in the case.....

Yes, that is a truss rod channel full of bondo, a THICK layer of brushed on paint and a severely broken headstock.

Looking closer at the back of the neck, we find....

Why, the neck's nothing BUT bondo!

A couple of hours later.......

Good God, this thing is worse than I though! If I hadn't found this....

...I would have trashed it. BUT....it's the 89th Hamer Sunburst made, from 1977. After a long phone conversation with our owner, the decision is made to move forward.

Full armor on, kids, this one will be a battle.

The face had some gnarly,gnarly, GNARLY black enamel all over it except where the logo was. The cracks were horrible. I routed the nasty bits away and inlaid fresh wood, now there is no original wood holding the headstock on.

Removing the paint was a horrid experience, but I saved the headstock logo....

All of the replacement wood overlaps and nothing ends at the same place, adding strength.

Just when I think I'm starting to understand some of this repair stuff a thread like this comes along and slams me back to earth. I couldn't even fathom how to do this repair even when he was posting the half completed pics, I still couldn't see how it would work. I love these threads and love a happy ending. How many times had that headstock been broken? I see some biscuits in there that I'm assuming were an older repair. I'm also assuming that whoever did that repair was not the one that covered it in bondo.

That is excellent work Greg. That is the first time I've seen that style of repair and it makes sense. Without the step by step photos I would have been lost.
