Any love for 2112?

When I was in college (early 80's) my girlfriends little brother bought a copy of 2112 ... He hence (being a juvenile delinqent and frequently in trouble with the law) put all his other rush records tapes etc in a pile on the front lawn of his mothers house and set them on fire. proclaiming 2112 was the best Rush album ever and the only one anyone should own.

I never heard it having only owned "Moving Pictures" (which was quite enough, thank you, as Geddy Lee's voice is just a bit much for me to handle) but was always curious as to the greatness or lack thereof of this legendary slab o wax.

So yesterday when the local CD shop had a going out of business sale I took the oppourtunity to purchase the remastered deluxe version for $9 bucks ...

No bad, Not bad ... the concept album format gives us listeners a break from Geddys voice at times and has some really great drumming/guitar work going on

Any other fans of 2112? Opinions etc etc ?

Hemispheres is better, IMO. Both are pretty corny though.

Just buy Yes' Relayer and get the real deal straight fom the source. :D

I love "2112"... but that's coming from someone who found RUSH in the mid '70s with "Caress Of Steel"...

Actually, I love all of those early albums and don't care what anyone else thinks....... flamethrower.gif

You bet! I used to be a big Rush fan, though after the "Exit Stage... Left" I stopped following them.

That was the album that taught me how to play guitar!

I must have listened to it hundreds of times - in fact, one day my mom stopped me and asked;

"What exactly are the Temples of Syrinx anyway?"

Thanks for your patience, Momma.

More of a fan of the "All The Worlds A Stage" version. More concise and powerful.

That live link you posted there sounds like they are tuned down quite a bit. Sounds great though.

great album, grew up with that stuff, "farewell to kings is my fave"...............

I dig everything through Exit Stage Left. After that, they got too key/synth happy and didn't rock enough for my tastes.

Finally saw them live in August 2008. My GOD were they great live.

I was more of a Yes fan back in the prog rock days ... but really more of a King Crimson fan now that I think about it ... and early Genesis w/Peter Gabriel

2112 rules. Do also believe Farewell to Kings is their best effort. I actually like Geddy's vocals.

I acknowledge the talent but their music is not my cup of tea. However their first Album is a hard rock gem. After that, I failed to get it.

My absolute favorite Rush CD. Finally going to see them in September, they're playing Moving Pictures in it's entirety. Stoked!

Loved the early stuff, still can't get enough of some of the early tunes. Like many have said already, the signals album took a turn musically that I didn't follow.

I've never seen them live but I hear it's something else. My wife saw them in 2003 at Downsview Park in Toronto (SARS Benefit) where they played 2112 in it's entirety.

2112 changed my life when I first heard it back in '77. I was 9, and my friend liked to play the synth intro only, and then he'd pick up the needle and stop. One day I said "let it play" and the rest was history! Rush instantly became my favourite band.

Ultimately my favourite albums are the 'ES-355' ones, ie. A Farewell to Kings through Moving Pictures. But 2112 will always hold a special place in my heart.

Jim

Big Rush fan at the time I was starting to play. We were proud as hell to learn 2112.

Total sold-out Rush geek since seeing them live in '81 ('Temples' was one of the few songs I was familiar with prior to the concert). I lost interest in their new stuff during the synth years, but picked back up at Roll The Bones. The recent stuff is very good. Love the Snakes and Arrows Live DVD!

Hemispheres is a great Geddy record, all around. If you don't like his vox, even... Probly my favorite.

I like parts of the whole 2112 overture/suite, but the screaming, bombastic sections are kinda blunt. What's more, '70's FM radio played and played and played it until I couldn't hear it correctly, anymore.

I think "Lessons" is a good tune though and great proof of Alex as a great rhythm guy.

And I LIKE Pearts lyrics, for the most part. He's gone through some indulgent phases, but I may always love "Circumstances", "Entre Nous", "Camera Eye", and so on...

I remember having the 8-Track of 2112 in 1978. Cranking it through headphones and staring at the spooky pentagram.
