Compressor pedal recommendations?

Looking for something simple to use and quiet (less hiss), mostly to give more punch to picked, single note clean tones. I have a Behringer that gets the job done, but surely there is something better?

Thanks,

Mark B

I have one of these and really like it a lot: Guyatone ST-2

I never have liked how compressors kill the initial attack of the note. I tried a Barber Tone Press but decided to try the ST-2 and it worked a lot better for me. It is very simple to use. I also own a Keeley Compressor and like the tone but it also squashes the attack too much.

No really popular for some reason but I use the tc electronic nova dynamics. You can choose between studio which is a multiband compressor and is extremely transparent or the stomp mode which is like a dyna comp. Then there is a blend control that makes it a parallel compressor so you can mix in some dry/uncompressed signal and retain all the initial attack. It also has a noise gate mode but I've never tried it. I use it for both guitar and bass and have been really happy with it.

If you are somewhat skilled in soldering I suggest you get a cheap used Boss CS3, and then buy a Monte Allums mod kit for it. A cheap way to get a top of the line compressor that covers a lot of ground.

I use the Barber tone press. I like it

Me, too. Haven't tried the Guyatone, but they get good reviews. A quick search shows they also appear to be a hard-to-find unit.

Being able to mix the dry signal back in is a huge plus.

I have the Visal sound Route 66, and I do like the comp side alot, only pushed aside by my TC electronics nova system, totally dreamy! I would assume the TC stand alone compressor should be just as good

...I always recommend the diamond comp

I hate comps, but love the diamond.

+1 on the Diamond.

No clue how it compares to a Tone Press, but the Diamond gives me no reason to wonder.

I used a dimed CS-3 with a HUSH II unit for years.

I now have a Tone Press and an old Soul Preacher (sort of like a noisy Dan Armstrong Orange Squeeze... not that versatile).

The Tone Press is fooking mild as shit... I really liked it at first (I still do) but realized that if it so transparent and subtle, then why have it on in the first place? It's a great subtle compressor but doesn't give the squishy squashy and pronounced attack like the CS-3. It operates more like a studio compressor (like the DBX160). The Guyatone is pretty transparent too.

I agree with Disturber... the CS-3 mods are probably the best way to go for gettin' the juice.

The Diamond looks interesting too...

Talkbass member bongomania has reviewed dozens of compressors of all flavors. Here's a link to his reviews site:

His reviews are geared toward compressor use with bass, but he does include a message to guitarists.

That's handy, thanks!

I had the Barber Tone Press compressor. It sounded good, but I felt it was very subtle like Zenmindbeginner said. My favorite go to compressor is the old Boss CS-2. It's a little bit noisy, but it puts that extra sustain and the way it makes my guitar sound when I pop, snap, or twang with single coil pickups when I play R&B/funk/disco cover songs in my Top 40 band. I'm lucky that I'm also using the Boss GT-3 which has the same compressor in it.
