I just cut my left index finger. It's a small, thin cut, but quite painful. Just put a stitch on and still manage to play. However, do you have any advice to make it heal fast(er)?

TIA!

Superglue? Wow! Put a plaster on top + Polysporin cream. As I say, still manage to play --well, at least rhythm.

Stitch? You mean it was sutured? If it wasn't really stitched I would personally hold the wound closed, after cleaning and drying carefully and put a bead of superglue over it. You have to overlap onto the normal skin some and make sure you give the glue enough time to dry before you put any stress on it. It will heal at aboutthe same rate as if it were sutured, 7-10 days for a finger assuming it's a clean cut. If you want to post a pic of the actual wound I can give you even better advice :)

Superglue may hold it closed but is it sterile? I wouldn't, last thing you want is an infection. Give it a little time.

Superglue was originally developed for this purpose.

However, it does have some nasties in it, so "Liquid Skin" is actually a better thing to use.

As far as healing faster - Neosporin (sp?) and try to stay off of it...

Thanks a lot for the replies, though this is really almost nothing.

I actually put one of these butterfly stitches:

Both parts didn't stay together, as I guess my skin's calluses aren't "glue-able" after all. Just removed the whole thing and this is how it looks -picture taken with a crappy cell phone, sorry:

Anyway, not a big deal... excepting it's exactly at the wrong place of my left hand's strongest finger.

PS: Now my wife is laughing at me: "Why such a drama?" "Will your intestines go out through that wound?" "I wonder what would happen if men gave birth, instead of women!"

Yup, bacteria will prolong the healing process, Neo-Sporin is the fastest way to heal, Murkat mentioned air... I'd try to get some direct sunlight on the uncovered wound for at least 5 minutes everyday too.

Keep it clean and don't touch yer pets while it's healing. That's a special finger you've got there, hopefully you aren't out of action for too long.

I'm always getting cut and plus undergone major tattooing over the years. Just keep it clean and don't put anything on it, even my tattoo guy says that. Neosporin slows the healing process for me because you have to put a band aid over the Neosporin, and air can't get to the wound to dry it out.

The story goes that SRV used to play until his fingers bled, then Superglued his fingers to his chest so he could rip off fresh patches of skin and keep playing with minimal delay.

I DON'T recommend that approach, but I guess Stevie thought it was worth it.

Plain old soap and water and should be no need for anything else after a day or so.

It is on the wrong place, but you can't make a baby in a month with nine pregnant women...so air it, and do something else, give it the time to seal together, don't touch it.

All women keep saying to me "you're such a pussy!"

But you see, today I wanted to give a couple of solos a seriours workout, and I just have to forget about it.

Well, life is good anyway. I'm now trying to play stuff with just the three other fingers and that's an even better workout! B)

FWiW I still would have superglued it! That stuff has been used in operating rooms for a variety of purpose, including neurosurgery for years. Unopened tubes are sterile enough. The skin itself really can't be steriized despite scrubbing with antiseptics etc. That is a minor cut that should heal uneventfully in a few days.

I've used superglue several times, and I'll use it again. It makes kind of a lump until the area heals, if you press the strings down with that exact part, you may not want to super glue it, as the edges of the superglued area may catch on the string,

If you want it back to normal as quick as possible, just leave it alone.

This may be the antithesis of the " rock n' roll " life style, but fresh air, sunlight, a healthy diet, and plenty of sleep will reduce the healing process significantly ; I've used superglue in an emergency, but at best I've only managed to "limp" through a show like this, and I feel it does increase the time for the wound to mend.

Well guys, I did everything but the superglue thingy --not very fond on that one, sorry.

No pain and there's just a little scar left. My finger is back to full working order! B)

Edited to add: THANKS a LOT for all the advices. As of the superglue goes, I'll leave it just for extreme situations, such as a gig I cannot cancel or something like that. Thanks again!

Years ago, my friend broke a high E string, and on an impulse tried to just rip the other end off the tuners to get it out of the way. He nearly severed one of his fingers, that still gives me chills and the heebie jeebies, just thinking about that. 'shudder...'
