The customer is always right.

Kahlers are great. They don't suffer from tone weirdness like Floyds and perform quite well under most circumstances.

Jay is tha man.

If Jay had refused to do it the owner would just have taken it elsewhere and had it done anyway so it would probably not have been repaired so expertly and we wouldn't have got to see it !!

Plus it's one less nice one which makes mine more valuable!!

You guys are silly. I dig floyds and kahlers and hate fender style bridges. Great work Jaye. Always entertaining.

Actually, the Aceburst had a third pickup hole carved by a rabid squirrel, 17 holes from previous bridge monstrosity and was a 1981....I love Jay, don't get me wrong. I have talked customers into other scenarios when they asked for stuff like that. If they hold their line, somebody else DOES do it because I won't.

The customer is always right until they ruin a good guitar.

Ask Elliot Easton.

I was talking with him on the phone a few years back about his Phantoms and he said he had three great ones. Sounded and played great. Then he put Kahlers on two (I own the 3d unKahlered one) and the guitars were ruined.

I own the Aceburst now and it smokes with the Wraptail bridge. With all the Butchery that guitar had been thru, Greg's decision to put on that bridge was pure Genius! Its one of a kind now!

I don't like how Kahlers sound; but maybe I'm just used to Floyds - I'd put a Floyd on a 4 digit Sunburst, if I really liked the guitar, and I felt certain it wouldn't kill the guitar's mojo.

This.

Jay has proven over and over that his skills are hardly "hackery" and one wonders why someone would feel the need to even say so.

If done right, it shouldn't be an issue. That is a nice Sunburst, but it isn't a 4-digit Standard (I had one of those that a Kahler de-mojoed), and I'm pretty sure Jay could build a D'Angelico out of chicken feces and duct tape. :D

Whether it's the common consensus or not, some people/players prefer certain things - yes...even Kahlers. Sometimes those things are integral to their playing style, their comfort, "feel" or whatever.

If (insert your favorite guitarist of all time in this slot) asked anybody here to do that mod because it was part of their sound, and they needed that to go out on a world tour, I'd think it would get done.

I like Kahlers.

The Standard that Chris (and later I) owned was Brad Whitford's. Didn't get that info until after I sold it! Don't think he did the mod though.

How does installing a Kahler ruin a good guitar?

The Kahler requires routing wood out of the top and adding some screw holes.

Taking the Kahler off requires filling the routed area and holes with wood. If the guitar has a flame top the repair requires a new veneer or chunk of matching maple and some refinish work. Even when it is done right there will be a stigma attached to the guitar for having such a repair.

Because Jay and I are friends, and it's a boyish nudge at the man. Sorry if you didn't get that, you'll be okay.

Thanks. I don't know much about the Kahler trem system.

NICE!!! but DAMN those two hamers have been through a LOT.

What the heck did they have installed on the first one with the headstock break? 8 holes? Looks like something rectangular was stuck on there as well.

As for the second one with the heel break, that's one great repair job. Isn't easy to fix, and I've never seen someone use those dowels like that. What kind of wood are they? Also, was the body of the guitar splitting too? I noticed you put a strap on the back, and pinned it in. sounds like the guitar had some serious structural issues. I don't like kahlers, but other's do, and I don't see what is so bad about putting one on that guitar. It's not like it's a gleaming mint guitar from the late 70s. That guitar is a player, and has been around the block. It's a tool after all.

I mean, it's not a 59 Les Paul, and it's not a 50's Strat that has never been touched. It's a player's guitar, and putting the kahler on will help it get more played.

I cant believe you can still get kahlers. Nos?

You can get them brand new through wammiworld.com . They're being made again, certain popular players such as Jerry Cantrell, Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman kept them alive.

Posted

Can't you also get them directly through www.kahlerusa.com?

They do seem to be a bunch more expensive direct though. They brought the company back, but really haven't been gaining much headway into getting back into the trem mainstream.

Posted

The price per unit in 2012 dollars is probably equivalent to what they cost back in the mid-80s.

Posted

The cost of a new Kahler 7300 trem- $169.00

The price to rout a guitar for said Kahler- $150

The ability to piss off opinionated Interwebz guitar snobs- Priceless

;)

Yeah, me too. Too bad it never has to be the other guy...
