salem Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 As many of you know, the kids today embrace many modern rock bands because it's fashionable and hip. This does not mean the band plays great music or writes great songs. How about Jack White and the White Stripes? Are they any good? I listened to some clips at Amazon and though this is not the ideal way to discern music, White's singing seemed off key and whiney. Are the White Stripes a truly great rock band?
acb Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 Jack White is a talented musician... the White Stripes recordings are a showcase of his talent. Not a hoax, just an expression. His production skills are also first class - listen to Loretta Lynn/Van Lear Rose.
morningstar Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..............Got the cover of the Rolling Stone. At least Jacky Poo can now "send five copies to [his] mother". My favorite line from the songSolo: "Skree skunonkk blaaant bumk"Producer "Be-yoooo-tee-ful... just the way I pictured it in my mind."Laterzmorningstar
MrGuitarguy Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 Live they are the worst band EVER!!! The guitar is WAY out of tune, there's no sense of rhythm form either of them, and he can't sing. Basically they'd be a great punk band in that style except they're actually trying, which negates the whole idea.Bakc when they were first on SNL I'd never heard of them. The next day one of the guitar instuctors at the music store I was working at asked me if the perfoamce was supposed to be a joke! TERRIBLE!!!I say this with all seriousness: The White Stripes make 7th grade bands of kids who've only been playing for less than a year look like virtuosos. Once again, I stress that I'm not kidding at all.
hamerhead Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 THANK YOU, MRGUITARGUY!!!I heard the hype WAY before I heard the 'band'. After hearing them, it was 'WTF?!?'Nails on the chalkboard. Definitely.
Submariner85 Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 And their Drummer sucks. And no Bass. And no Cowbell.I gotta have more cowbell.
Brooks Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 some of the tunes on the new cd have a robert plant vibe to the vocals. i think he's got talent as a singer and writer, he just needs a rhythm section & lead guitarist.
MrGuitarguy Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 some of the tunes on the new cd have a robert plant vibe to the vocals. i think he's got talent as a singer... Thank you Autotune!!!! Hell even I'd sound like Geoff Tate with those studio tricks!!
hamersandstrats Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 I like the song "Seven Nation Army" but that's about it.
shankyboy Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 I used to do sound for this really good top 40 band with a chick lead singer and they did "seven nation army". I had never heard the original and thought it was a real cool song. The way they performed it and the way I mixed it made it sound like a real eerie soundtrack for a Tarantino movie. When I actually heard the original on the radio, I was very disappointed. I have seen them perform a couple of times on TV and they were terrible. On the flipside, the Loretta Lynn CD is pretty damn cool with Jack's production & playing on it. Genius, no, different & unique, yes.
jwhitcomb3 Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I like the White Stripes. I like that they are constantly trying new things and experimenting. It doesn't always work, but it's usually interesting and entertaining. And when they're on, they make some of the most exciting rock'n'roll around. Jack can flat out sing and play, and is production skills are excellent. It's amazing they've become as popular as they are because they are anything but mainstream. They're one of those bands that if you don't get them, you'll wonder what the fuss is, but if you get them, you'll dig 'em.-Jonathan
Rockola Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 It's interesting but doesn't 'sink the hook' for me....yet. And by yet, I mean influenced a purchase. Personally, I think Dexter Romweber has more talent in his toejam that Jack but, just like W-S, either you get it or you don't. Next topic, BJORKS.
Rockola Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Geez... I swear I had no idea. I just did a check on Dexter and, lo and behold, Jack White is the quoted artist on his labels website. Somebody tell my wife that I'm a geniusS.
pesocaster Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I think Jack White has flashes of brilliance guitar and songwriting wise.... I thought Vanlear Rose with Loretta Lynn was great.... Are the White stripes my kind of daily listening.... no .... but it is a nice change of pace from time to time.... just got to take it for what it is.... or not....
belikerick Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I've got to say that I think Jack White and the White Stripes are the sh*t! He's not tied into any one type of song/music and is always experimenting and trying new things. I love the over-the-top-close-to-the-edge-of-noise guitar "tone" on the rockin' stuff. I saw them live this summer and they were GREAT! (Ok, Jack was great, Meg is not as good as high school freshmen in Jazz I ). Let the hate go guys and listen a little closer.
earachemyeye Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Seven Nation Army FILLS the dance floor every time we play it but it just hasn't grown on me. Jack also showed up in the movie Cold Mountain in a funny looking hat so maybe George Harrison is right.Joe
KorinaHound Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I think Jack White has flashes of brilliance guitar and songwriting wise.... I thought Vanlear Rose with Loretta Lynn was great.... I thought it was the 21st century spin on "The Emperor's New Clothes." "Come, you must listen to this new musical endeavour! Can you not hear the magic? Only the wise and educated will be able to appreciate the mastery!" "Uh, yeah, uh, I do hear it..." That one soared into the top 40 album charts on all the hype and pre-game then fell like the weighted turd it was. We can only hope she'll gather some real artists around her and cut her crowning jewel album before she heads for the big coal mine in the sky. I would sure hate to go out on that note. KorinaHound
BadgerDave Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 I'm not going to call Jack White a visionary, but he delivered a much needed kick in the a$$ to a "rock" music scene that seemed to be offering nothing more challenging than Coldplay and Bon Jovi.I'd put Jack in the same catagory as Curt Cobain. More of an instigator than an artist, but with better technical skills.Listen to "Ball and Biscuit" on the Elephant CD for some insight into what Jack is capable of on the guitar. Pretty impressive stuff.
jwhitcomb3 Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Listen to "Ball and Biscuit" on the Elephant CD for some insight into what Jack is capable of on the guitar. Pretty impressive stuff. Ball and Biscuit is a great little slice of rock'n'roll attitude.-Jonathan
robbie Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 You guys want the more traditional sound with bass? see this... http://www.reddkross.com/features/RBC/NYT.htmlThere is an MP3 on the Redd Kross site as well... Why didn't I think a that? ha ha...
cmatthes Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Redd Kross/the Bros. McDonald = So freakin' Cool
sojourner Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 Crude/primitive is its own sound. The White Stripes' (commercial) genius is that they appear to be a reaction to both mechnical sound and the huge wash of noise some of the modern alt bands have. Jack White makes you think you can head into the garage with a drummer and churn out hits with your crappy set-up just the way he seems to.Technical genius and sophisticated playing ability are neither necessary nor sufficient to commercial success. How many players out there would commit time and resources to covering Son House and even making a video? Give the guy some credit. No record exec was clamoring for that...
