cornjulio Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 So here it is...a 1982 special in white with a matching headstock. I had a hard time deciding on this one. I don't mind the chips and dings, after all this is a vintage guitar and has been played. It also has an undercoat of silver paint, something I never noticed this before. Then again I never had a white hamer before. What did worry me a bit were the cracks in the finish around the headstock and the neck heel. Nothing big but they are noticable but I've seen this on other guitars too. The seller is the original owner. He assured me, he doesn't remember dropping it or anything. The neck feels solid, I checked near the neck pocket when I took picture of the PUs and cleaned the guitar. I restrung the guitar with 010s. It sounds great and has a really beefy neck, a bit like my Shishkov, another thing I never noticed on specials before. Some chips of the finish came loose when two stickers were peeled off (one of them I removed myself, should have been more careful). I does have a black sustain block. If there are any opinions on the neck condition that would be appreciated. Here are some pictures:
hamerhead Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Love it. It's been played and has a big neck - what's not to love, right? It looks like it might have taken a shot that caused the back of the neck/headstock finish spiderweb, which may have also caused the pocket chip/cracking, but nothing deeper than the finish (IMO). Great score.
donner Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 I have a similar Special from 83 in all black with checkerboard stripe, that shows the same spider web lacquer crackling. If made by Tom Murphy's razor blades, you would have had to pay a huge upcharge 😉 I saw the ad too, it seems to be one of these early Hamers from Spieker & Pulch, who were early adopters and helped generating high respect and appreciation for the Hamer brand in Germany. Remember Dick & Alex! Congrats for snaggin it up – play her loud!
kizanski Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 I think you'd be hard pressed to find a Special from that time that doesn't have all of the lacquer cracking and spider webbing.

scottcald Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Looks cool, Enjoy it! Also, actual play wear, not what I'll call pay-to-play-wear.
mrjamiam Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Great get! They're definitely not making any more of those. Congrats and enjoy!
Steve Haynie Posted August 5, 2021 Posted August 5, 2021 Two years earlier a Special could have a thin neck. My Sunburst is from 1982, and rather saying it has a thick neck it might be better to say it has a comfortable neck. There are much larger necks on some guitars. Get some black tuners.
