Of all songs in the history of recorded music, that one makes my personal top-10 of nails-on-a-chalkboard awful, regardless of the voice behind it. Heh. I like Dolly, and respect Jolene, but that song overall never worked for me. Upbeat tempo with lyrics that didn't fit. Really thin instrumentally. I like the "Slow Ass" version better. Still Dolly. : )

LucSulla Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 If you were disappointed, that means that you, at some point, entertained the notion that she would entertain you. The pertinent issue here is not her failing to meet your expectations but why you ever had any for her to fail in the first place.
scottcald Posted October 14, 2021 Posted October 14, 2021 Hey, at least it's not autotuned! I think when people see someone's doing a cover of a song they love, subconsciously they compare it to the first time excitement of hearing the original artist at their best in a studio environment. This is "Hey, let's play Black Dog at the show today". I think she just likes the song and wanted to have fun playing it. Hey, if it gets more people to listen to Zeppelin and those types of bands, I'm all for it.
Ting Ho Dung Posted October 15, 2021 Author Posted October 15, 2021 I watched the video that @Menehunenoted that is apparently a Dolly Parton cover. Yes, it was better than the Black Dog video. I watched it three times trying to figure out what why it didn't do "the thing" that captures a person in a tune. At least for me. Then I realized that Miley is just mediocre to me. Just doesn't stand out either in looks, though I wouldn't kick her out of mom's station wagon, or in vocal style or unique talent. To me everything she does seems forced. She tries real hard to shock, which doesn't happen to me very easily, and seems clumsy at it. She is not witty at least in what little snips I've seen. Mrs. Ting was watching something on TV last night where people wear some sort of electronic suit and it portrays them as they would like to be as an Avatar. They sing and move but you only see a computer animation of their Avatar. There was a lady on there who didn't make the cut and I thought she was superb vocally. I watched the Dolly video again today and thought Miley was very mediocre and remembered the lady from last night. Then I watched the Ann Wilson version and was blown away. I felt again that Miley tries so hard to be in your face and "Punk" as some have said. But it just seems like a misbehaving child starving for attention. Someone trying to be so different. And then I thought of Lady GaGa and how she IS different and doesn't have to try. She is genuine, talented, and almost pretty in her own way. I don't know any of her tunes but when I hear her or see her I take notice. Miley is not Lady GaGa. And then I turned on YouTube and this was right there in my feed. I'm glad I don't take conspiracies too seriously.

0054 Posted October 18, 2021 Posted October 18, 2021 Liked the P90s! Aside from her personna, I liked it. It rocked. She proves sex sells. If ya wanna twerk with that one, you ought to be tested for more than C-19

Jack C Posted October 20, 2021 Posted October 20, 2021 Ok I just listened to the Jolene cover and didn’t love it. I miss Dolly’s vibrato.

Kerry Marchman Posted October 25, 2021 Posted October 25, 2021 That cover just shows how great a voice Plant has.. The band kicked it though...

Willie G. Moseley Posted October 25, 2021 Posted October 25, 2021 RE "71-year-old Ann Wilson": First time Heart played Atlanta was on 3 SEP 77, and their encore was "Rock an Roll", right next to "Black Dog" on Led Zeppelin IV. Ms. Wilson was 27 at the time. A bit apples n' oranges 'coz it's two different songs, but IMO that version figures into the mix of comparisons of chicks singing originally-Plant vocals.
