A thread doomed to die of neglect, but what the heck.

I called my exes but it seems they've all gotten married, so here we are.

Your wait would be shorter if you just ordered a Shishkov.

I don't want to derail the thread here. Is Shishkov responding? I've emailed three times since September and never got a response after the initial, "I'll get back to you." It sounded like he isn't taking orders.

Mike put a pause on new orders last year while he clears out the queue/backlog.

Okay, that would make sense. I am not going to chase someone down to spend money, but I was hoping to further look into a commission.

You could get a regular Newport and have Josh wind you up a set of humbucker-sized P90s.

  • Feynman changed the title to WTB: Newport 90, or etc.

^- this.

The bucker sized P90 he wound for me (neck position) was the real deal. I think (being a simple-minded intellectual wannabe) the secret was having the raw cover. It sounded more like a P90 than any other bucker-sized P90 I had tried.

Did you try the Kinman P90-bucker?

Great P90 sound

No hum. (Period)

@Feynman, If you  do want a “regular” Newport, mine will be posted in the next week here or you an PM me…Bigsby with a Vibramate added and I swapped in Rumpel Filter’trons in place of the Cats. I5 will be significantly cheaper than the one on thatClist add too. Transparent orange spruce top on hog.  Great guitar but it is time for me to downsize both amps and guitars while I await the next Shishkov.

Hopefully  we are all on the call back list from mid 2021 for when the backlog is worked down to a manageable level. We talked about a really delicious new build, but left it open for his comfort level.

FWIW, another builder ceased booking orders at least THREE years ago due to his backlog. Said he would write down my number in the event he ever reopened. Mike and David are the only two builders I have an interest in working with on a new custom order at this point.

I understand that Scott Walker also stopped booking orders when his predicted backlog reached 4 years. AFAIK, his base price now starts in the 5 figures. Seems a lot of people CAN justify that. Not me.

I know how anxious I would be if I was sitting on orders and/or deposits for something I knew I could not deliver for 2-3 years.

Yeah-I understand all that. I recently read about K-line making some set necks and I think I am going to go that route. I agree with you on the 5 figures price point. There is no way I would drop that much on a guitar, especially considering my peak playing days are long gone.

To put the thread back on track, Mitch contacted me about the coolest Newport 90 in my "employ".  I'm not ready to let it go.  It's just one of the most unique sounding guitars I've ever owned.  I remember that I heard there were 7 of them.  I could be wrong.  Just ask my wife...

I knew they were pretty low in numbers but I didn’t realize there were that few. I didn’t hesitate when I saw one for sale though.     The one I had for a minute didn’t do anything more for me then the jr.  Well, except feedback more.  Exceptionally made guitar though.  If I didn’t have the jr at the time I probably would have dug it way more.

It's not designed to sound like a Jr.  I liken it to a ES-5 from the fifties.  Jazz to lower gain blues.  The tone control means more on that guitar than any one I've ever owned.

I should have worded that I didn’t expect it to sound like the Junior but it sounded so similar when I got it that  I didnt see the need for it for me since I had the Junior which covered much of the same territory for me.  I found the Junior to be one the most tone control sensitive guitar I’ve owned also.

Obviously the Junior didn’t have a neck pickup though so that would make it more versatile.

Nice looking guitar though (assuming back of the body and neck are both mahogany), it’s odd that the stain color on the body doesn’t match the neck.

Spruce top

Mahogany back

Maple neck

That explains it.
