Well that is one year before I was born. I would have loved to see that show. Sly and the family stone are one of my fav artists, (one of many).

I saw an interview with Larry where he said that he was originaly a drummer, but they had no bassplayer in the band so he played bass at some gigs. Well then of course they had no drummer, (as he was playing bass), so Larry started thumping the strings where the kick was supposed to be, and snap where the snare was supposed to be. That is how he invented the slap bass style. Then later came the P funk with Bootsy, and disco music etc, and then waaay later Flea picked up on the trade.

I love Sly & the Family Stone. Everytime I watch there clips/videos though, I cant help but think there sure as hell would not be a Prince if it weren't for Sly. I mean the influence Sly had on Prince is just immeasurable! right down to the clothes. Although I will give Prince kudos for not being influenced by Sly's immense drug habit which pretty much brought him and his career right in the crapper. So sad that drugs have taken so many of the greats or at least they're talent, whether there dead or the living dead. Having said that, Ive also had my battles with said "mood enhancers".........

Hey guys,

I happen to be good friends with Gail Mudrow ( guitarist/vocalist for Graham Central Station), Sly Stone's cousin. She has a band called "Family Stone Experience" with the ex-members of Sly & The Family Stone and Graham Central Station. I saw them open for James Brown at the Paramount Theater in Oakland in 2005. Great show!! I got to meet Greg D'errico, Rose and a few other of the original band members at one of their other shows in the Bay Area. Great band and nice people to be with.

I wasn't much of a Sly fan, but a lot of their stuff has held up over the years (thanks in no small part to L. Graham). Obviously, "I Want to Take You Higher" mixed w/ "Hey Music Lover" was a highlight of the Woodstock movie, and one things I thought was a hoot was the choreography that Graham and the guitar player were doing. As I recall, Larry looked to be playing a Candy Apple Red Jazz Bass, and the guitarist has Gibson electric acoustic w/ f-holes and a Florentine cutaway...hell, I've still got the VHS so I'll probably look it later on tonight. Exciting stuff, aurally and visually.

I saw Sly w/ Larry on Bass at St. Johns Arena when I was just a lil guy in '70. I went with my uncle. I was addicted to live music from then on. I got a real sweet spot for most of the SaTFS's music.

Life IS Good!!! Thanks for the memories. I just put in a greatest hits cd. "....Get UP and DANCE to THE Music!!!...."

Lee Dorman was from Iron Butterfly, Bobby Caldwell played drums with Johnny Winter, Rod Evans from Deep Purple and Rhino on guitar.

One of the best bands for the times. One of my favorites of all times.

Saw them back up Alice Cooper back in the early 70's.

Great blast from the past.

But this is pretty cool....

Mott used to let Queen open for them before they had a record deal. Queen's "Now I'm Here" was a tribute to Mott....

Very cool, but that sure looked like a live vocal over a recorded (studio) instrument track!
