I'm too busy to wind pickups any more, so I had another company making GregWinds to my spec. Sadly, the quality drifted a good bit, and the specs seemed to be almost arbitrary at times, with customers telling me that their pickups were nowhere near what I had told them they would be. I ended the association and went looking for another guy. Seymour and I are good buds, so we talked but he couldn't commit to making them whenever I needed more.

I had heard of Will Boggs from a reputable source, and spent an hour and a half on the phone with him, finding that we agreed on every facet of pickup winding and voicing. It was as if I were speaking to myself(which I do all the time, anyway). I gave Will the exact spec for my personal wind, which is a set that took me years to get to where I liked every position on the switch.... growly bridge, silky neck and clinky middle, all of which clean up when the volume is dropped back. I play with my volume on 8 or so, and like the enhanced dynamics that you get with the Hamer pots at that spot. I can then turn up for a bit more bite or turn down to soften the tone. All of my vintage Gibsons(and my Huber and Robin guitars) have Hamer volume pots!

So Will videotapes the wind of my prototype set, so that we have a pattern from which we can go from.

He NAILED it the first time out.

I put them in my Oceanburst Prototype, and used the guitar INSTEAD of most of my regular guitars because it is EXACTLY what I like, tonewise.

I have since put WB Gregwinds in my Huber, and have installed some for Brad Whitford of Aerosmith(the front of house guy told me that his Hamer Standard Korina with my pickups is the best sounding guitar that Brad owns now), Ronnie Younkins of Kix(knocked him on his ass), and Billy Duffy and Nitebob have some as well. (tone report from Billy soon, they are in Europe as we speak). Stevie Clay(who is RENOWNED for his tone sense) has gotten two sets so far, with more on the way for him. He bought the first set because we are brothers, the second set because they blew him away.

Articulate, defined, and WONDERFUL when tapped. Available in black, zebra, reverse zebra and double creme and antique white. $280/set uncovered $310/set with nickel covers. I give a 100%money back guarantee, and have yet to have anyone that got some not buy more.

Check Will out at www.wbpickups.com There will be tone samples soon.

Thanks for the info Greg. I'll put in an order within the next month or so. I want to get them in before I do another session of recording.

Can't wait to hear them!

Those sound like they would be very cool in my Sunburst. Are the coils wound asymmetrically (a la the Unbucker) for when they are tapped? Also, I'm curious what kind of magnets are in them?

Thanks,

You got em in "F" spaced for us Floyd Wankers?? Yes....I'm trying to

broaden my horizons and find a pickup other than EMG's :)

Posted

you dont need F spaced.... what a marketing ploy.

I know.....was just bustin balls...lol!! I think I want some though

I'm just doing a build and the customer supplied a pair of WB's, looks like he made the right choice.

you dont need F spaced.... what a marketing ploy.

PS: If they were more expensive that would be a marketing ploy !

PPS: Greg, had a chance to roadtest the 67-07's ?

I am the only WB dealer selling the limited 6707 Green set, patterned after the famous Peter Green Les Paul set.

The 6707 pickups are awesome, we are going to do a very few Gregwinds using 6707 wire in the mix.

These things sound like they would kill in a Talladega......

He doesn't strike me as someone who would be all upset over "sloppy seconds", particularly in this instance... :)

Well crap.

Greg, as I know you are Rio Grande fan as well. Are your pups EQ'd similar to a BBQ & Texas set, with that midrange hump, or more like old school PAFs?

I'm not asking you to draw an EQ chart, but if you could describe how they are voiced I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

The Gregwinds are more "hi-fi" then the BBQ/TX (more articulate is a good description). I'm not as good with the descriptions as Greg would be, but if it's any indicator, I've been a fan of the Rios for a long time and I immediately ordered a set of these when I heard them. They're just "clearer" if that makes sense. I'd email Greg directly though for a better description from someone who can put this stuff into words!

I wonder if it would help to put up a few sound clips of the same riff to get a sense of comparison: '59/JB, BBQ/TX, GregWinds

Of course there would be differences in the overall sounds of the guitars/amps, but at least you'd get the idea.

My favorite combo right now is a Pearly Gates and Custom. I'm definetly going to have to try the Gregwinds.

If someone wants to try them go ahead, there is enough interest on the board to turn around and sell them if you don't like them.

Do It, DO IT, DO IT!!

Email me for more info, guys. I will figure out how to do soundclips, though I feel that they aren't really indicative of real world tone.

Soundclips are cool, but really, so dependent on rig used. Plus if you are listing to the clips through computer speakers, forget about it.

Do a clip with each pickup through about 10 different amps and voila, there you have it.
