There is some definite trem work in that song that can't be done on a Tele unless it has a Bigsby. My guess is that it is a blend of the two. IMHO that sounds more like a Strat with some Tele dialed in on the slide work.

"hitched a ride on a monkey's back" Highly underrated. Monster player. Really nice guys. Strat tones of the Gods. Seriously, if you don't own "Puzzle" and claim to dig Strat tones, it is a clinic, heavy on the maple-fingerboard bridge/middle stuff, but showing how to pull off huge sounding power chords without going nuts with gain. Lots of the stuff mentioned is undeniably epic, but much of it is very "sterile" sounding, where the dada stuff is more "street" to me. Some very "pretty" tones and some that are as full of unbridled rage as anything I have ever heard. "Dorina", "Mary Sunshine Rain", "Dim", "Dizz-nee Land" = Strat heaven. Gurley likes to use the "Vibe" as well, and does so with great taste. "El Subliminoso" is also fantastic. My choice for best ever Strat tones. The heavy Boogie MK series use doesn't hurt either. Z

CAUTION; Its definitely an "acquired taste", (2) Dick Dale songs played back-to-back is quite enough for me. But whether you like surf music or not, there's no mistaking a Dick Dale song or his style when he plays his Strat.Hey guys, believe it or not SRV did a guitar duet with Dale for the re-recording of Pipeline for the movie Back to the Beach! Puzzle was my favorite album for a number of years, although nowadays I tend to listen to the heavier stuff from El Subliminoso when I get a Dada craving (Rise and The Fleecing of America are great songs with some ripping guitar work in them). I think of him when I think of Strats. Other than that, Blackmore, Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, David Byrne, Ron Asheton, Wayne Kramer and Gilmour. How about Echoes by Pink Floyd? I love the funky jam in the middle part. BTW, I just picked up a Nash S-57 and its pretty freakin' killer.
Michael Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 I have to agree with those who mentioned "Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs" by Derek and the Dominoes. Vintage Stratocaster, small Tweed amps, the album really lets you know what a Stratocaster sounds like in the hands of a master. Quintessential Stratocaster tone, unencumbered by ultra high gain amplifiers or unnecessarily "flashy" playing. Cuts to the quick it does. On the off chance you haven't really heard the record, you'd do well to check it out. Hard to beat "Sultans of Swing" either. Taste always gets my vote.
