why do I get the feeling that Stike was cursing every tape cut on that...

Because you could probably hear him swearing from where you are sitting!

That finish is as cool as it gets!

How long does it take to do a checkerboard finish compared to other custom finishes? The prep work would have to require a very patient person.

Although I'm at 7 Hamers presently, I know NOTHING of the Phantoms.

Scale length, radius, neck carve...Of the one's I own, my FAVORITE feeling / sounding is my 95 Studio wraptail.

Of course, I need this like I need another hole in the head, but, checkerboard intrigues me.

Hey Serial! What year, details on that that Phantom you love so much? Is 1985 correct? Thanks!

I've always thought that, but truth be told, I don't know that I've even looked in three years. Jim Fagan was checking it out last Saturday night and he mentioned that it was an '84. Wow-I really should pay attention to my gear!

If it helps, my '83 has a scale length of 24 3/4; fretboard radius is Hamer's 14"; neck carve (and I measured) is nearly identical to an American Standard Strat, but with more shoulder on either side of the back center line. That said, it plays nothing like a strat (mostly due to the differing radius, but also due to the shoulders). I posted the actual measurements here somewhere, but I can't find them with the search function. Still looking...

Damn, that's cool.

I was just thinking I love my Proto so much that I should get a Phantom some day and want to know what to keep an eye out for ...

Seven Hamers? Do I need SEVEN?:blink::blink:

Seven Hamers? Do I need SEVEN?:blink::lol:

No, you only need six!

So buy the Phantom and you know what to do with that certain Special you have,

Or, seven is a cool number, bro!

Dug up that old post of measurements. Rather than post a link, here it is:

Okay, I've measured the neck and I have to admit, I'm surprised. The Phantom is 1.625" wide at the nut and 2.057" wide at the 12th fret. It is 0.881" deep at the first fret and 0.901" deep at the 12th fret.

The thing that surprised me is that my AmStd Strat is about the same: 1.6875" at the nut (factory spec) and measured 2.064 at the 12th fret. Likewise, the Strat is 0.802" deep at the 1st fret and 0.886" deep at the 12th fret. I'd never have guessed they are so close because they play really differently. I think the primary difference is the Hamer's flatter fretboard. The shape of the necks between those measurements is different, too. The strat is the left half of a C (like every other Strat) whereas the Hamer seems to be more of an oval (more meat at the shoulders).

I've also had a question about fretwire. I couldn't for the life of me get a measurement that I was comfortable being quoted on (long night last night posting here, long day staring at a computer screen at work, I'm over 40, you get the picture) but it appears to be the same fretwire as in the '80 Special. Just when I was about to give up and ask you guys, I found this thread that indicates that it is very close to Dunlop 6105: Hamer Fret Wire Discussion. This place is just the best.

Hope this helps.

It does help very much, Thank you.

Now...The big question...Do I have even the slightest justification to make it 8? (I know, wrong forum)

If you want one like this, you'd have to talk to Rick Nielsen...or Peter Fung.

Those are the only two I know that have Vectors like this. In the meantime, try a Phantom on for size!
