Brooks Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 first the good news:TJ KIRK - TALKING ONLY MAKES IT WORSE (live)- 90's neo jazz supergroup w/ charlie hunter, will bernard, john schott, & scott amendola. loved their 2 out of print cd's, but this live cd is my fave; raw, ballsy, and really shows their warped sense of humor. the groups name comes from "T"helonius monk, "J"ames brown, and roland "KIRK"; these smartass amazing players take music from these 3 artists and combine them in a twisted stew of jazz, funk, rawk, surf, and silliness. loved the unexpected riff medley in monks "epistrophy" that races thru quotes from aqualung/ain't talking 'bout love/barracuda/blackdog/ironman/cat scratch fever! will bernard gets some twisted sounds, fuzzy scratchy trippy. i love this cd!!! best cd purchase since scofield's uberjam. if you remotely like jeff beck/ jazz/ funk/fusion/humor in music, buy this immediately.AUDIOSLAVE - OUT OF EXILE - i like these guys, and this cd is better than the 1st. they have moved in a more tuneful classic rawk direction, and it works. yes, tom morello still does the weird sounds, but not on every single tune. i love chris cornells voice, at least in the studio. now the bad news:i traded cd-r's w/ some kids on the stonerrock.com board; sent some c.o.c./zz top/sco/mmw/trad jazz, and recieved a bunch of crap in return. i love black sabbath/kyuss & some obsessed/spirit caravan/c.o.c., so i wanted to check out some of the "stoner" bands that get lumped in w/ these greats; unfortuantely i got:HIGH ON FIRE - BLESSED BLACK WINGS - i've read several good reviews of this, WTF!?! truly awful. frenzied sloppy riffs, horrible yelled monotone vocals, no redeeming qualities whatsoever.BLACK SABBATH W/ ROB HALFORD (live board recording, ozzfest 2004) -this sounded like a good idea. ozzy got sick last year, rob filled in for a show (he also did so at ozzys ~92 "retirement" show when dio refused to open for ozzy). anyhoo, rob sounded wrong, and believe it or not had more pitch problems than ozzy ever had! whoda thunkit.C.O.C. - IN THE ARMS OF GOD - raliegh nc homeboys, loved thier ~94 classic "deliverance", dissappointed w/ everything before and after. some cool riffs, but ehhhhh.ORANGE GOBLIN - TIME TRAVER BLUES (and 2 another albums i can't recall the name of) - a few cool riffs/tunes, but more bad vocals. why do these guys think that bad to mediocre vocals will cut it? same as the fu manchu stuff i got awhile back (sorry, stike).UNIDA - (live, & a studio album i can't recall the name of) - i was really looking forward to this, as ex-kyuss vocalist john garcia (whose voice i dig) fronts these guys. but, unida strikes me as the opposite of orange goblin; good sounding vocals, bad riffs/tunes. sigh...
BTMN Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 HFC Best of Vol. 2 in the cd player right now, Tobe just finished and Track#5 Decievied Me Rob J is in the first verse.

darc Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Among other things... I just happened to find an album on my iPod, which I'd purchased around 2001 or so and forgotten about, called "Education in Rebellion" by Union Underground. They were sort of blurring the line between Alice in Chains and nu-metal, maybe closer to AIC in retrospect. I remember liking the album then, but assumed it would not have stood the test of time. But I've been spinning this album and I'm surprised - these are very good, heavy songs IMO. This album got some airtime back when with "Turn Me On Mr. Dead Man", and then the band slipped into obscurity. Wonder what happened...

lonote049 Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 I'm listening to 3 Time/Life "Classic Jazz" compilation sets given to me by a co-worker: Jazz Masters, Jazz Greats and Jazz Legends. I love these because they provide a wealth of instrumental tunes that my band can use. We often start a set out with an instrumental before the singer comes up. The jazz tunes provide a little something different than playing Little Walter or George "Harmonica" Smith instrumentals.
Brooks Posted July 26, 2005 Author Posted July 26, 2005 Fu Manchu's (Godzillia's) Eating Dust, hey Brooks wanna borrow it? LOL. gotta say that outta all the "stoner rock" bands i didn't like, fu manchu was the best, ha.
