Steve Haynie Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Let's include the family of Randy Rhoads. They have allowed Jackson to do high dollar limited runs of the Rhoads model over and over, and then they put his name on a wine label. The person to watch right now is Wendy Dio. She has a "brand name" to keep relevant, but she is probably going to use Ronnie James Dio's name for charitable work (which Ronnie did during his lifetime) as much as she will push the books and music.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted March 7, 2011 Author Posted March 7, 2011 Night Ranger.Really?!?Actually, I was thinking of Brad Gillis a little bit as I posted this, because he put his name on a Fernandes despite pretty much only playing on his Strat w/ an aftermarket Floyd. But was Jeff Watson that bad about it, too? And Kelly Keagy? Didn't Jack Blades actually play his Hamer for a good number of years?
Ted Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Has the endless amount of signature Dime Deans something to do with this thread, or that would be OT? Because Dime has nothing to do with it, but it's a fact there's an explosion of Dean Dime models. So, it's clear to me there's a whore somewhere in there. Dime's been gone for a while now, but Dean continues to come out with new Dime Guitars and a new Amp Line. I wonder if Dean could have/will survive without Dime Gear? It also shows that Dime truly did have an incredibly good influence on a lot of players-especially young ones.
mc2 Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 +1 on both counts. I noticed Allen Woody's umteenth when I saw a Modulus ad that showed him with an 18-string... Brad and Joe are obviously guitar collectors...Well....if being a "guitar collector" is justification, then Allen Woody is also off the hook as a bass collector. But he would have been my #1 offender pick....besides the KISS camp.
specialk Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 The flip side of this makes me appreciate Paul Gilbert that much more, even though I'm not a big Ibanez fan.
Jason01 Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Kiss has proven that they will endorse/market absolutely anything. I don't know any other bands with coffins and condoms with their name on them. I saw a recent megadeth show and dave was playing a signature model dean with signature model pickups and megadeth sweatbands so he could at least get an honorable mention.
FiguredMaple Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I don't know the story behind it but Steve Stevens had two models with Hamer then had Washburn make him a model that looked very similar to the last guitar that Hamer made for him. Wasn't he the reason Hamer breifly made bolt ons?Kip Winger also had his model with Hamer then went on to Jackson.
gregc Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Joe Walsh has pretty much endorsed everything!
gorch Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 It requires quite a market overview to find the worst endorser around. Anyhow, I have a recent story to add to the thread. Carl Verheyen almost always plays his old green fender on stage. At least I haven't seen him playing anything else electronically over the years. LsL created a CV signature model charming his personal Fender setup that sells for ~$2700. At least they put a lot of attention to detail in the solution and haven't made a mass product from it. Something I would have expected from Fender.
RoyB Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 I really think there should be a distinction here because everyone on this board changes guitars and amps like they change their socks but it's using their own money, so you can't fault an artist for changing models or brands either because they want a different sound or look. Now that said my problem is with artists that say they will use your stuff if you pay them (sorry too many names to list there) or the ones who endorse brands or gear you have never in your life seem them play. Also hate like everyone the whole Paul deal with his I've used Gibson, Hamer, BC Rich, Ibanez, Warshburn, Silvertone(??) now I'm back to Warshburn. He went from great guitars to peddling $99 junk. Too sad.
diablo175 Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 I'll give you a hint: "I can play any guitar I want. I choose Silvertone." But for this the description would read more like switching from brand to brand to brand back to brand another brand before alternating brands Don't forget their Gibson endorsement in the Alive liner notes- "KISS plays Gibson guitars and Marshall amps because they want the best..."
Brooks Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 I'll give you a hint: "I can play any guitar I want. I choose Silvertone." don't forget the hamers!
Stike Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 There was a bassist named Beaver Felton and I want to say around 20ish years ago he was in probably fiftyeleven different little 2"X2" ads in the back of the guitar mags shilling for all kinds of crap-Axe Sac, Guit Glove, that kind of shit.
cmatthes Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Don't forget their Gibson endorsement in the Alive liner notes- "KISS plays Gibson guitars and Marshall amps because they want the best..." Actually, that was in most of their mid-70s albums - on the back covers too, but it said Pearl Drums (not Marshall amps). The reason? Pearl, like Gibson, was distributed by Norlin. That was a very lucrative endorsement deal, but at least they had the integrity not to use Lab Series stuff...
cynic Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 ... at least they had the integrity not to use Lab Series stuff... Hey! I've had my Lab Series for 31 years and love it!
Ethan Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 George Lynch is the guy that always gets me...while I love his playing and he has stuck with ESP Guitars/necks/logo stickers for a long time, the amount of ads you see him in for different amps/strings/speakers/pedals even today is pretty funny!
tombo Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 I don't know the story behind it but Steve Stevens had two models with Hamer then had Washburn make him a model that looked very similar to the last guitar that Hamer made for him. Steve Stevens:HamerWashburnMusic Man Axisand now....Framus
Hamer_SS_guy Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Most of you have several instruments of different companies too. when I was 11 I wanted a Strat because I read that Ritchie Blackmore used a Fender Strat. But that was because I didn't know about guitars anyway. Before I bought a guitar 3 years later I already knew that Gibson, Schecter, Hamer and Charvel (we're talking 1983, but there were lots of endorsements going on then too) and others made great instruments too. I bought a Hamer Steve Stevens in 1988. But not because SS was my "idol" but because I wanted a Gibson-like guitar with a Floyd Rose. Hamer had lots of endorsers then. But it was the features of the instruments not the endorsers that made me choose Hamer. I remember seeing Yngwie Malmsteen's and also Blackmore's name in a few Schecter catalogues. I think Blackmore only used Schecter pickups for a time.
