diablo175 Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Don't mean to single out diablo (or MCChris, for that matter), but I've seen remarks along these same lines here before, and I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong with occasionally enjoying the music of our youth? It sure doesn't seem as creepy as being 50 and trying to dress like a 20 year old and attending some techno-rave concert with a bunch of kids young enough to be one's own kids (or grandkids or that matter). There's nothing wrong with it. Issues arise when there are complaints about prices, that the old band isn't supporting something new and therefore is doing a money grab, or if they are supporting something new, that the new stuff by the 60-year-olds somehow doesn't have the fire of their 20-year-old selves, blah blah blah. Again, reasonable expectations are the key here. And on the flip side of the rest of your post, I won't go so far as to call it "creepy" when 50-somethings take their 20-something kids to classic rock concerts, but i will say that there's something not right about it, and in fact is very anti-rock'n'roll. I was fine with my old man giving me a ride to see VH on the Diver Down tour and picking me up afterward, but I damn well didn't want him sitting next to me inside the venue. Nor was i interested in seeing Simon and Garfunkel or the 5th Dimension with him. On a side note, I'd like to clarify that while those of you who have met me in person know that I am indeed a prick, I'm not as much of a prick as perhaps I'm coming across in this thread. I just happen to be typing from a workplace that I've been let go from but still have to show up to until March 2 so I don't get dicked out of my severance, therefore I'm a bit salty. That also explains why i have so much time to respond lol. Now back to the spirited discussion, which I'm enjoying. Actually, I don't have a problem with 50 year-olds bringing their kids to classic rock concerts - I've done it myself and it can be fun. I was talking more about 50 year-olds going to younger shows alone in a lame (and largely transparent) attempt to still seem hip and relevant (again, not pointed at you). I don't have a problem with a money grab playing old material, either - If fans want to hear it and pay for it, more power to 'em - band and fans alike. As has already been pointed out, the guys in VH aren't 20 anymore, so we probably shouldn't expect them to act like it. I'll buy the new album, and even if it doesn't live up to their old stuff, I can just about guarantee it'll be one of my favorite releases of the year just because there seems to be so much crap released these days (and no, I don't think that's a symptom of my growing older, I really do think there's a bunch of crap out there - like there probably ALWAYS has been, but there seems to be more of it these days). Sorry to hear about your job, Chris - that sucks. Hopefully you'll get soemthing else lined up in the meantime, albeit probably not something that makes the rest of us so damn envious As someone who has attended concerts wherein certain concert altering /enhancing substances were being passed around not far from Dad and son, it was a little unnerving and distracted from the show to a small degree but hey, that was their problem. I just wanted to dig the show. If bands wanna do the money grab (and they all do), fine. Can't blame 'em but don't BS us- be transparent about it. I get a kick outta these bands like Kiss & VH doing their cash out tours but sell it as a tour to support the new album. Really? I actually like going to to shows to hear all the songs of my youth. These bands count on that. Count the cash rolling in. The tour ain't about the new stuff 'cuz as another post pointed out, the crowd ain't there to hear it. So let's cut the shiite and be realistic about it: this ain't about VH's latest single. It's about us fanboys getting all tingly at the thought of seeing DLR and Eddie do the tunes of our misspent youths. To that end, based on what I've heard, their latest offering is well in keeping with that. Do ya think VH already knows this?
coolfeel Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 I can't wait to see your Cali diablo175. That thing is going to be complete badass!
polara Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Deep down I'm bugged when I see old guys strut around singing about getting laid because it doesn't bring me back to my youth. It makes me realize I probably look as ridiculous as they do. Old horny guys are gross, even when I am one. It's why I like seeing old musicians grow and change and progress. Gives me hope that I didn't peak 30 years ago, as Van Halen (or insert favorite dinosaur band here) did. Tells me I can still learn new things and not just be frozen in amber...Still think the song is okay and they've matured more than I'd expected. Long as theyre having fun and the fans dig it, it's all good. They were never really my thing anyway - I was an annoying weirdo into XTC and the Clash - so I'm not too psyched or hatin'.
diablo175 Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 I can't wait to see your Cali diablo175. That thing is going to be complete badass! A bit off topic, coolfeel, but I agree 100%. After seeing/reading about your Chap, I am friggin' stoked to see what comes out of the shop for me. Got a long wait yet.

My guitar isn't quite the shredder that yours will be...dude they are going to put the mother love on your guitar...it will be all kinds of sick... The build quality on these guitars is beyond stupid...in a good way that is...
iownit4 Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 wow Chicken foot blows this stuff away ... not cool
jisham Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 wow Chicken foot blows this stuff away ... not coolI like the Chickenfoot stuff too but I don't see music as a competitive sport personally. This song has really grown on me...particularly after listening to it via Sony headphones and not watching the accompanying video. I'm definitely looking forward to hearing the rest of the CD.
velorush Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 if bands are honest about their intentions. i.e. "we're here to collect cash & play all your faves from our past catalog of faves" Again, methinks your expectations are unrealistic, especially in this regard. Even Rush, who appear as genuine as can be and probably are to a large extent, are all about the cash these days. Which is why they didn't play "Caress of Steel" or even "2112" or "Permanent Waves" in their entirety on the Time Machine tour. Sure, the rabid fans would have eaten that up, but the *casual* fans (a.k.a. the ones who take things over the top from a revenue perspective) would have passed on it. I seriously doubt even Rush would sit through an end-to-end recital of Caress of Steel! A three hour show with no warm-up band and only one break in the middle? You may disagree, but it seems like cash for value provided to me. The new Sectors box sets are a better argument that Rush is cashing in on their legacy (with a back catalog like that, wouldn't you?). But Rush have also consistently delivered new material all these years. Clockwork Angels is reportedly recorded and in mixing for release maybe as early as May. Play 2112 and/or Permanent Waves? Any day; in fact the Snakes & Arrows set had all of Permanent Waves excepting only "Jacob's Ladder" and "Different Strings." Ged might have problems with 2112; I suppose they could always tune down a bit. But I digress. Sorry to hear of your separation - you're a talented guy with experience and skills (and demonstrable wit): something better is undoubtedly on its way! Edited for clarification...
Jack C Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 This shit is seriously stuck in my head. The VH boys may know what they're doing after all...
mathman Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 This shit is seriously stuck in my head. The VH boys may know what they're doing after all...+1 It passes one of my main tests. It gets better the more I listen, not worse.
Crwth145 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 This shit is seriously stuck in my head. The VH boys may know what they're doing after all... ..."Swap-meet Sally... trampstamp cat... mousewife to momshell in the time it took to get that new tattoo... tattoo-tattoo"
Crwth145 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Thanks... I actually went back and tried to read lips at 0:52 into the video and still couldn't tell for sure.
hamerhead Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 This shit is seriously stuck in my head. The VH boys may know what they're doing after all...+1 It passes one of my main tests. It gets better the more I listen, not worse.I've listened to it about 5 times in a row this morning, and it actually grooves pretty good. The solo guitar tones are sweet, and center solo is one of the best I've heard from Ed in a long while - not full of chirps and bird whistles and noise, but actual balls-out guitar slingin'.And I'm seeing this step backwards as a step forward. With Sammy and Mike's vocal ability gone (notice I didn't say 'lyric' ability), they've shifted focus to their strengths - Dave's sense of humor and Ed's ripping lead work. And they've done that pretty well.Which is why we liked them in the first place.
Hardrockracer Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Let's be serious, did anyone really think we'd hear a kinda reincarnation of VH I that leaves a similar footprint ? This is as good as it gets. Like it or not. I am curious to hear the rest of the album. But I am sure I won't be going to a concert. Not at those ticket prices. Plus VH back in the day was also about an energetic stage show. Well I don't see Dave doin' the splits from the drum riser these days. And their looks are a far cry from their heydays. And Wolfgang, that dork had to stand behind the stage if he was in my band being so fat and ugly.HRR
cynic Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 that dork had to stand behind the stage if he was in my band being so fat and ugly. Well, we can't all look as good in a bikini as you

Well, we can't all look as good in a bikini as you Well, it's not that he couldn't change that. Lose a bit of weight and most important let his hair grow. He even looked more Rock 'n Roll on the reunion tour. I just hate if rock musicians look like bank clerks. HRR
jisham Posted January 14, 2012 Author Posted January 14, 2012 Yeah, one certainly can't rock out with short hair...

jamesbridges Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Terrible, sounds like a lounge act, too bad. Besides, no M.Anthony no VanHalen.
Stike Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Yeah, one certainly can't rock out with short hair... Well that's what he looked like in that YouTube video of his solo spot in Vegas on the 2008 tour but then again Chad Kroger has longer hair................
kizanski Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 I wish I could play like Bank Teller EVH.Actually, I'm even envious of the hair of Bank Teller EVH.Sonofabitch.

Plays hard rock, check. Known to race, check. Fat? Negative. Ugly? Negative. Congrats Chad! You can be in a band with Hard Rock Racer, AND play in front of the backline!
