What pulls you musically out of the emotional hole?

Feeling sad, i guess work routine got the best out of me

What do you listen to when you feel sad??

Posted

I suppose that depends on whether you want to stay in that sad space and relish it, or find a way out. If the former, lots of dark alt-country stuff, ala Wilco. If the latter, live Dead from the late 70s. YMWV.

YMMV- DEFINITELY

But I agree with G Man's assessment- sometimes you wanna run with that sadness, as strange as that sounds. Maybe let it run it's course is a better analogy. Times like that, especially when they were brought on by relationship issues, Type O Negative's Too Late: Frozen came in handy.

When I wanna be free of the sad shit, it's either nostalgic and upbeat goodies that recall good times/places or defiant, unrelenting rockers. As in, I will NOT let this/you beat me down. Again, Too Late: Frozen comes to mind

The title of this thread has nothing to do with the content. I thought I was in the OC momentarily.

Edit: I was going to say, kids puking in the next room. That has happened.

Certainly, ben wahs can be used to dissipate the sadness...

I'll fix the title

I'm with GMan, it depends if I want to stay there for a bit (and work my way out), or if I need to get out as fast as I can! If I'm going to stay there, I've got plenty of depressing singer songwriters/alt-rock stuff. If my wife hears it, she knows I'm in a sad state. If I'm angry (like a pissy day at work), out comes the Anthrax, Testament, and such. If I've had a bad day but I need to get better quick (especially around the family), I put stuff on that is upbeat, filled with melody, and makes me want to sing a long. Note: don't put trite music on if you are in a mood, it'll make you want to strangle your speakers!

Right. Catharsis vs mood alteration

I'm convinced that Metallica got me through my late-teen angst w/o a suicide attempt because I got to scream along with Fade To Black instead of actually making everything fade to black.

But when I want to pull myself out of a bad mood, I often go with upbeat jazz forms, whether fusion, dixieland, big band, or Latin. If not, then upbeat 80s-style rock.

It is difficult for me to give specifics, because those are mostly mid-/late-90s Chinese pop stars...

I used to separate my music by mood, but the "Down" folder very nearly caused a divorce, so I stopped doing that.

Agressive music. Metal (usually) or rap (sometimes). Lamb of God or Pantera on the metal. I have a little mix of about 8 songs. Picks me right up.

I would recommend you this: http://www.amazon.ca/Pulse-The-Planet-Slim-Williams/dp/B0011JYPVY

I listen to it when I feel like dancing, or when I want to play the funky beat on the steering wheel of my car -so I guess that could make you feel happier. :)

But in my own case, it's metal what gets me out from a sad mood.

I specially like "Nightfall In The Middle Earth", from Blind Guardian. It's not a happy album, but it grabs my attention so much that I forget about everything else when I listen to it.

Another album that gets me particularly happy is Mercyful Fate's "9". It somehow triggers my wild side. It's like getting high, but using no substance at all. I just sing and bang my head to it and it makes me feel like I am the king of the world. It's however a bit too Satanic for most, I think.

Also, something like Malmsteen's "Trilogy" always improves my mood. I like all the songs and all the solos there, and it's also part of my personal history, as well as my brother's. I feel a positive nostalgy when I listen to it. But that's perhaps too dependant on how this album is related to my own case.

Finally, Helloween three first albums are a total blast, always. Definitively recommended! :)

Ana, I think you need to fire up a Marley and find an older man. You'll be alright.

.......As I type this, Satch's 'Summer Song' starts up. Makes me feel better every time.

I had a faible for Aerosmith' Walk This Way to lift me up after strong working sessions.

Satriani's Flying In A Blue Dream gets me going anytime I hear it. Best version to be found on the Satriani Live! CD. It's really flying.

LMAO!!!

Let's move to Utah!! Oh wait..that only works for guys i guess.... :D

When i'm sad, i listen to things that bring nice memories, like progresive metal or classic rock.

When i'm pissed off, i have one song: "Death on Two Legs"..oh wait...nope, i have a second song: "Sleep with one eye open," by BMTH

But metal is the thing to get out of it.

Sometimes you have to mourn a bit, and then move on. I call it "weaned".

I read somewhere that the best way to deal with sadness is to tell yourself that you'll be sad in the next 30 mins, but not one minute more, after that you try to move on

Thank you for the great ideas, i don't know anything outside metal, so i'll be listening to some Zappa tonight on youtube

And i'll try to find the best and biggest Canada Gold Marley that i can afford...that'll help too!!! :P

A friend, long ago, answered the question with the Dead......Not Fade Away/Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad.......A long, live version....(Him..."I always feel better after that")

And I always get a chuckle from Jimmy Thackery's "Cool Guitar" (Gonna Sell The Bitches Car):

For me, "blues" usually helps. For my wife, something "softer"....So I will sing her a chorus or two of John Denver......."Sunshine on my shoulder, makes me sweaty. etc"

Good luck!

Song lyrics may come close to describing a bummer I'm feeling, but it's often the music that resonates more closely.

In fact, music is most often an enjoyable distraction for me...if there's a particular reason I'm putting it on.

Along mourning lines, I could go straight to something wistful and elegant, like Stan Getz' version of "Blood Count" or "Speechless", by Weather Report. Both marry sadness to beauty - and that experience kinda transports and gives me a bit different focus...

Other times, just gimme a bit of Allan Holdsworth - or another really profound virtuoso - for that wide-eyed, life-affirmiing exhilaration.

Music is almost always THE therapy for me, though it's a matter of how I'm wired than a specific cure...

BTW - I wonder if "Just Another Suicide" by UFO was one of the all-time cheeriest SOUNDing songs on purpose.

Lately this has been doing it for me when I need to snap out of it.

Edit: Summer Song is a good call too. Actually almost any of Satch's uptempo radio-rockers will make me smile a little.

Radar Love is another one I'm partial to... Come to think of it, if it's a good "driving song", it's likely going to cheer me up. :)

I'm a huge Cowboy Bebop nerd! I have the entire series on DVD along with 5 CD's of music. Cool music all over that series. Samurai Champloo has some nice music too but not quite as good (same goes for the series itself IMO).
