zorrow Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 These videos hurt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sHwxjkGQcU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8p1RIfmnSQ They look like a "Mustaine shreds" parody.
JohnnyB Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 That concert was just last Saturday. I wonder how many attendees would still agree with the ad copy for the sold-out concert:In this truly unique concert event, master guitarist Dave Mustaine of the thrash-metal pioneers Megadeth brings his crunchy and energetic sensibility to the great works of classical music which have inspired him over the course of his Grammy-nominated, multiplatinum-selling career. When Dave Mustaine performs the virtuosic “Summer” and “Winter” movements from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, and J.S. Bach’s classic “Air” on the G string, you will see a truly different side of “metal.” The San Diego Symphony will then wow you in the second half of the program with Antonín Dvořák's famous New World Symphony. Following the Dvořák will be Richard Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," and who knows… someone might just feel inclined to walk back on stage to rejoin the members of the San Diego Symphony in an encore performance where heavy-metallic sparks are sure to fly!Riiiiiiiight!
Never2Late Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 That would have been a challenging set even-for Paul Gilbert, who has merged those styles before.

diablo175 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I'm truly embarrassed for him. That was a train wreck... <insert vomiting emoticon here>
BlueRedWhite Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I read this and actually didn't want to see the videos...i feel sorry for him, but as the article says, you need to be better prepare to tackle the classics (Maalsteem would have been awesome i think)
hamerhead Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I'm truly embarrassed for him. That was a train wreck... <insert vomiting emoticon here> Here: Losing the ego-vs-talent war sucks.
RichRS6 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Like fingernails on a blackboard.............................I feel sorry for the orchestra having to sit through it unable to get up and walk away.
coolfeel Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Man that was just bad... Hard to know what his reaction will be though if he hears this.
JohnnyB Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I'm truly embarrassed for him. That was a train wreck... <insert vomiting emoticon here> Here: Losing the ego-vs-talent war sucks. Ego? What ego?
velorush Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Say what you want about Vai, but the man nails it and and nails it regularly. That's not Vivaldi, but I have no doubt Steve could accomplish the Four Seasons accompanying an orchestra with the aplomb (and there's your word for the day!) necessary for the task. Malmsteen could have pulled it off, too - he's shown over and over his mastery of the Baroque composers. I don't take any joy in this - I'm neither a Mustaine fan nor hater - but I do think it shows the difficulty of moving between both styles of music and 'band' orchestration.

carfish7 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I hope it was partly due to being recorded by someone's portable whatever..........that was painful.
Bobby Marshall Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 He should have hired someone to "arrange" the pieces so he could have been prepared. When you have time to prepare there is no excuse for an awful performance. I can't imagine he did not have time. And he is no longer a drug addict so that crutch has long been burned.I would like to say this is almost spinal tap like but we all know Nigel would have killed it. And his Les Paul is still sustaining . . .
svl Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Not a Megadeaf fan, nor a Mustaine fan. Totally enjoyed those videos. As stated on numerous other sites the portable recording device didn't have shit to do with Mustaine sucking, as noted by the symphony sounding just fine. He was out of tune, out of time and out of his element.Crack is a hell of a drug, but ego is even more so....
BillW Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 so I listened - thinking to myself 'is it really as bad as they say?"OMG it was really, really awful ...I mean - wasn't he prepared... or ..??
Feynman Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 so I listened - thinking to myself 'is it really as bad as they say?"Me too - I figured it was typical overly harsh HFC banter, but that was truly terrible! Bad tuning, horrible tone, glaring clams, sad.

He was out of tune, out of time and out of his element.I just meant that the tone was ass-like and overpowered everything else. I don't know how anyone could tell if he was out-of-tune or time, because once he started flailing all I could hear was the guitar.
ib2010 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 My kingdom for an 18 watter- and a worthy tech, if i would listen to him.
JohnnyB Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 do not bring a knife to a gun fight ... or an axe, or an ass for that matter.

I don't know how anyone could tell if he was out-of-tune or time, because once he started flailing all I could hear was the guitar. It's a fail on all fronts starting with his inappropriate volume and buzzy-bee tone. But if you pay attention to the conductor marking the time and the orchestra playing the piece, you can tell that--like a rank amateur--he slows down for the hard parts and is not even in tune with himself when he goes up the fretboard. This is how it ought to be done, and not because it's performed here on violin as scored. Nigel Kennedy shows how to be a virtuoistic showman, musically significant, and entertaining all at once:
zorrow Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 Yes, that's a demanding set for anyone, but just for self-respect he should've prepared better. The shameful part is that he had it all to do a great job. He has a guy like Chris Broderick in his own band and could've used him as a "private coach". He also has a lot of mileage facing audiences of every possible size. No excuses then. With those assets almost anyone would've done a way better job. I just think he didn't prepare enough, period. He underestimated the difficulty of the task, didn't practice enough and perhaps even fell victim of magical thinking -like in "I'll nail it. Everything's gonna be alright". What a monumental mistake!
