Frisian Hamer Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Not to hijack but if anyone wants to see. Still don;t know he did it with his right arm pointing to the sky. Goto 1:05 if you want to get down to it. One time his right hand is pointing to the sky, hope that was a not a live shot. Maybe Sharon was triggering it back stage. :-) As soon as I played the vid, I thought something is wrong here.... Check @ 41 sec. as well

I am wondering if after the fact they just added all those in to jazz it up. First it's ridiculous, and I wouldn't even stoop so low as to say Zak would do it, and maybe Sharron though his muddy guitar playing had too many dead spots. Something is fishy and it's not Sharron's hole.
albacore Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 My fave is Billy G in the 2nd solo of I Need You Tonight, where he sustains 3 long pinches at a particular pitch, and then picks up the solo with fretted notes at the same pitch. Sounds so cool to me, but don't know what non-players make of it.
Jakeboy Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Just a note on Felder's Eagles studio rig....LP into a TWEED Deluxe. That amp was his secret weapon. He has stated that what he and Joe Walsh used all over Hotel.....along with a tweed Champ. Tweeds are fat. I use a lot of pinch harmonics when I play....I see them as a spice, to liven up a solo or riff.
Jackass Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Eric Johnson 'Bristol Shore'. Towards the end. It's ear piercing.Bm
Willie G. Moseley Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Rory Gallagher came up with some good stuff; a personal fave was the first note of the last solo on Taste's "Same Old Story"Although REO's "Ridin' the Storm Out" isn't one of my favorite songs by that band (most of the ones I like are on R.E.O.-T.W.O.), there are some repetitive chirps after one line on the live version from the late '70s album that are interesting.Felder was mentioned in last week's newspaper column, which I haven't had a chance to post; my family just got back in last night from a trip to DC. Will get the text up here prolly on Monday, but if you want to go to it online (it's up there), here's the link:http://tallasseetribune.com/2014/06/04/arena-rock-bands-have-the-last-laugh/
Biz Prof Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 So here is too the Master John Sykes. As good and as original as any metal guitarist, ever. Gonna have to third that. He busts out with a pretty awesome one at the 16 sec mark of this one. Just don't look if you're annoyed by extreme controls-checking OCD - Austin Great stuff! I wonder if Zakk Wyldle's over the top usage of that wide vibrato was influence by Sykes and also that double picking I can't describe. Sykes used it with taste. where Zak uses it aggressively and obsessively. If you want to see obsessive, watch Ozzie with Wylde playing Bark at the Moon live in 2013. I counted over 20 instances. Maybe brought someone out of retirement? Not to hijack but if anyone wants to see. Still don;t know he did it with his right arm pointing to the sky. Goto 1:05 if you want to get down to it. I think the entire guitar part was redone. Look at 1:23-1:30. After he puts his guitar in the air doing some fret hammers and pulls it back down, you hear a chord a second before he strums again. They never really show him playing anything close up, the camera is not on him during any pinch harmonic or something technical. I believe this is 2 parts, with the pinch harminics being the 2nd. You hear chords, the pinch harmonic and then you hear that the chord is still playing. Not sure if it's before or after the fact, but my opinion is that he took a dump on the song and Sharron and Ozzie had him do it again
atquinn Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Eric Johnson 'Bristol Shore'. Towards the end. It's ear piercing.BmI believe those are artificial harmonics, not pinch harmonics.-Austin
LucSulla Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Well, he was pretty bad ass back in the day. Then well... I think it just got easier to be in the Zakk Wylde business.
tbonesullivan Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Does EVH really use pinch harmonics very much? Usually when I think of a pinch harmonic it's a fretted note where you use your picking hand to create the harmonic. EVH is using full string harmonics on the various nodes on the whole string like at the 4th 5th 12th fret position.
Willie G. Moseley Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 More Rory Gallagher gems can be found on the terrific live album Irish Tour '74, including the intro to the very first song, "Cradle Rock". "Walk On Hot Coals" is also chock fulla meaningful squeals.

Just about every metal guitarist that plays heavy is going to have a few pinch harmonic, you nearly can't help it.Listen to Meanstreet chorus, it has mean pinch harmonic's followed by regular harmonics. "This is home" BUM BUM BUM BUM WAAAAAAA! This is meanstreet - then regular harmonics with the last diving.Pinch harmonics on the A and E string down low sound great. A very common usage is pinching the e string on the "G" note, which Eddie does on the Verse in Meanstreet.
atquinn Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Awesome pinches at about 4:30, but you should listen to the entire solo starting around 4:10 - Austin
Hamer of the gods Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Billy Gibbons is the king of PH's...The super high one in the solo portion of "Beer Drinkers And Hell Raisers" is my favorite.
DaveH Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Sheesh....that was rough. Explain to me again how this guy is considered a guitar god?Umm... Ever listened to 'No More Tears'? One of the most badass rock solos ever.
RobB Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 "Wayward Child", on Rory Gallagher's, "Stage Struck."Strat, Treble Booster, AC30, bitches.
Crimsontider Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Here's one out of left field. Not religious, but I watch Jimmy Swaggart's SBN network because his church is loaded with Nashville Session Musician's. A dude playing some rock gospel with a telecaster was constantly playing subtle pinch harmonics. It's just a style with many. If you like to play tight, the pinches are improvised flavoring, like that squawking fat sound that sax players make that gets everyone's attention. You want to see top notch Gospel Music? watch the SBN channel. It's 580 and 1580 for HD with U-Verse. Great improvised 30 minute jam session's.
diablo175 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Cannot believe no one's posted this guy: Or this guy:
Crimsontider Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Probably because there are 100's of great pitch harmonic moments?0:55 is a good one. I just love Jake, he has that style where pinch harmonics just happen because of the way he plays.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWAohdmCl4o
diablo175 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Probably because there are 100's of great pitch harmonic moments? No doubt. But love or hate these two (I've noted a bit of dislike for Vai on here) Vai and Satch IMO wield pinch harmonics as well as any of those already mentioned. Both have seamlessly incorporated them into their playing as an effective, expressive tool and not just a gimmick, or a crutch as in the case of Zakk.
zorrow Posted June 9, 2014 Author Posted June 9, 2014 (I've noted a bit of dislike for Vai on here)Dislike? That should be just jealousy. Vai rules!
