Sugartune Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Going for the tobacco burst with natural back, also hopefully similar to the last example from Velorush above. Do like opaques, but love to see the beauty of the wood even more.
soli'd Posted August 16, 2014 Author Posted August 16, 2014 Maybe this is more your thing?why yes, that's it almost exactly. Add a bit of red hue in the top, dark natural on the rest and we're there! Nice guitar.
tmsfo Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Flametop schmametop Now that's what I'm talking about! But crowns... like your standard, crossbred with this: and this: Jaysus that 54 blacktop is just porn.
RichRS6 Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to think about, well maybe not but it's one of them. It's the first time I've had a choice about what colour guitar to have, normally it's not an issue as I don't buy guitars based on the colour, it's more about what's available at the time. Always wanted a Black or White Standard (if I had been just a little quicker responding to the ad for the Riff it wouldn't be a problem damnit) but it would be a real shame to hide such beautiful maple under any colour paint.I may have to wait until the first NSGD to make this call.Never had a chambered guitar either so still trying to make up my mind about deleting the chambers, weight is not an issue and any differences it might make to the sound are so subjective.
hamerhead Posted August 27, 2014 Posted August 27, 2014 Get it in white, and after a couple years when you're sick of it, sand it off. Top will still be there, and it'll be like having a new guitar all over again.
velorush Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I was pondering (again) the finish... I had the "Beauty of the Burst" book out looking up something for another thread and marked a few bursts I found appealing, mostly darkbursts. Then I closed the book and there it was, THE finish: Beautiful orange-to-almost-brown fade. IF this falls in the realm of permissable by Mr. Shishkov, this will be my preference!
hikarateboy Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I've decided on my finish. I really thought I wanted opaque black, but I also wanted a quilt guitar, never had one, why not both kinda. Found a previously built 12 string bass with what I wanted. Talked to Mike today and the decision is done all though there may be a VERY light black burst from the edge. I think there are other possibly better pictures out there but this will have to do for now unless HFCer/owner of 12 string bass shown in the photo wants to post them. I'm gonna call her black velvet. Actually I am not but thought it was a fun idea. Trans Black looks great over flame too. Gotcha thinking now don't I?
The Shark Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Yup. I can see it now! Black quilt for you.
Thundersteel Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I personally don't like opaque finishes; I like the natural beauty of the wood to show through. Having said that, my killer '89 LP is opaque, and I'm not letting it go anytime soon. It looks black, but under the lights, it looks like specks of red glitter throughout. The finish is Black Cherry, and I've never seen another one like it. Here's a pic of the back of the neck, with some of the red sparkles showing:
crunchee Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Trans-black quilt-topped finish? Needs Punisher inlays on an ebony board. I like transparent finishes, as I love to see the beauty of the wood grain...problem was, I used to obsess over them when I had them, and hyper-critiqued every little detail. Out of the four electric guitars that I now have, two are opaque black and one is opaque white which has heavily aged into banana pudding yellow. Since I don't/can't obsess over the wood grain on those guitars, I wind up spending more time playing them!

hikarateboy Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Hey Ted:This is my C/O 12verAnd the inspiration for what I am doing. Absolutely Beautiful.
hikarateboy Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Hopefully, Mine will look VERY similar to this. After seeing this I am thinking that I will not have a light black bursting around edges. Now the unbearable process of waiting begins.

Jakeboy Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I want a quilt top on my Ultimate as well, but a different color....
soli'd Posted September 9, 2014 Author Posted September 9, 2014 Criminy, guys- this thread is about opaque finishes. j/k, I just hadn't posted anything in a little while.
hanspanzer Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I`ve ordered my guitar in 50`s burst but I can`t stop thinking how it would look with a black top.....
velorush Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 I was pondering (again) the finish... Time to get serious - really serious. I was revisiting this finish - actually this photo of this finish as the cover guitar is Paul Stanley's 'burst. The photos of the guitar inside the book and otherwise on the web show it to be much lighter. If it could be darkened down like the cover photo... maybe like this (only with white binding), that would be more to my liking: That (or something like it) with the redish stained back and neck would be beautiful! The only caveat is the Hamer web site says this was "color shaded rather than stained" and I have no idea what that is. If that's some complicated finish that is outside the norm, that would be too much to throw in at the last minute. Maybe the coloring is possible with normal techniques?
bubs_42 Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Google search Larry Dimarzio Les Paul. One of my all time favorite LP's.
Jakeboy Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 I have a tele in Daphne Blue......it would be hard to imagine any guitar NOT looking good in that color...or surf green for that matter....I am already planning the details for my 2nd Shishkov and that finish will be unlike any I have ever seen, yet very simple....
