MARTY FRIEDMAN: 'I'd Rather Chew Glass Than Listen To JIMI HENDRIX'

The headline sounds way worst than what he actually meant. Read the whole thing at http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/marty-friedman-id-rather-chew-glass-than-listen-to-jimi-hendrix/

It's about personal taste after all, but kinda odd anyway.

Hendrix fans did react though.

He can't listen to Hendrix because "he thinks of hippies". But he's a big Uli Roth fan. The guy must be totally bi-polar.

Never heard anything from Marty that didn't bore me to death. I can appreciate the technical prowess, but there's no joy, no humor in it, so I'm out. Hendrix isn't everybody's cup of tea either - I get that - but Mr. Friedman has no business slamming anybody...except maybe Kirk Hammett. Then again, I believe they share the same wig maker, so that won't happen...

Marty's got my respect re: his prowess and his note selection- dude plays some truly challenging shit and has a rather unorthodox playing style, both technically in terms of his execution/technique, and from a theory (what I understand of it, anyway) standpoint.

Furthermore, I'll admit I've seen people walk out of room that was playing Hendrix for more than, say, 3 songs, that didn't include Purple Haze, Foxy Lady and Little Wing. Hell, I'm good for only half a CD's worth of his stuff on any given day and I f*cking revere the man.

But you don't ever slag Hendrix. Even if you don't get him. His contribution to music on several levels was/is just too great.

Marty can still hope he'll have a fraction of that importance and influence... someday.

Well, once you read everything he said, it's not that bad:

He continued: "But then again, all of my favorite guitarists hail Hendrix: I'm a big Uli Jon Roth fan, and he's the most beautiful guitarist. He probably loves Hendrix as much as Hendrix's own mother does. All the guys I respect love Hendrix, so I know there's something there. It's just that I never got it, because it never fit into my experiences."

And BTW, Marty isn't non-sense wankery. It's purposeful wankery. No, seriously. There was a time his melodic sensitivity was unique, specially in metal. So, Hendrix is an iconic musician, but Marty will always be Marty, no matter what.

One's playing originates above the neck. The other's below the belt. I've always had more appreciation for guys who fit the latter description.

And all that noise and feedback, and I'm like, 'Play in tune.'

That's called "going for it" in a live setting. This was also the '60s, before advancements were made with Strat-type tremolos.

Can anyone point to an example of Hendrix playing out of tune on a studio recording? I've never heard it.

I don't get him either. Different stroked for diff folks.

You've always been more cerebral than genital.

Now see, if Marty had drunk Pepsi instead of coke...

I wonder if he knows that it is because of Jimi that he is afforded the opportunity to earn a living playing the guitar.

Hendrix is my favorite, but I salute Mr. Friedman for speaking his mind and not cow-towing to the societal expectations of the guitar-wielding microcosm. Good for him. I'm about sick... no, I AM sick of people going along to get along. PC must die! Therefore I declare:

I LOVE ELO! Crank it up every time it comes on XM!

There, I said it! :P

You had me, then you lost me.

These don't sound to me too cerebral nor technically senseless -maybe #5 is, but the rest RULE. Please, pay special attention to #4:

And there are many more solos of him that are great too and weren't referenced in the video above, such as those in "Namida", "Dragon Mistress" and "Captive Honor" -the later with Megadeth.

I don't have an issue with what he said. He didn't slam Hendrix, he just said, "Not for me." I salute him for being honest knowing that he would probably catch some crap from folks. I really can't stand the idea that there is certain art that I have to enjoy in order to be a legitimate artist. I can totally appreciate something's importance to an art form without personally enjoying it. For instance, I don't much enjoy Frank Zappa's music taken as a whole, but man am I there was a Frank Zappa to shake things up.

It's not as if he suggested no one should enjoy Hendrix just because he doesn't. I think the problem is the word "get." Saying you don't "get" something seems to open your opinion to other's transferring their own meaning as to what you meant. Instead of reading it as, "Marty doesn't personally enjoy Hendrix's music," it seems to get translated as, "Marty doesn't get why Hendrix was ever popular and why people like him in the first place," even though that isn't what he said at all.

For the record, I like both of them.

I have no problem with what he said. I don't get some of these legends, either. BTW, I like Marty-era Megadeth and I LOVE Hendrix. I would even dare to say "Macine Gun" is the greatest moment ever achieved on the electric guitar.
