tbonesullivan Posted November 25, 2016 Posted November 25, 2016 Ahh, ok. It's true though: the "best" female anything is usually not found in an all-female band. I have friends in a really good band. Tight rhythmically and sound wise. Lead singer/rhythm guitar player is a guy, Lead guitar is a guy, Bass player/backup vocals is a woman, and the drummer (who has some endorsements) is also a woman. Part of that seems to be that bands with all women are generally marketed with that as the gimmick. I have seen a bunch of all-woman bands that had one or two members clearly not up to the same level as the others, but they didn't want to lose the "all woman" label.

Didn't that start with The Runaways or something like that? Also about that time were movies like, "Caged Heat" which perpetuated the schtick.
velorush Posted November 26, 2016 Posted November 26, 2016 Don't know where she fits in all the different points being made here, but Donna Grantis is a player with significant chops, great feel and also happens to be attractive (in spite of her haircut) - but unlike many, her attractiveness never seems to be made the point. Imagine the intimidation of hitting the stage with Prince every night! ETA: found this PRS ad with a few bits of playing in different styles:
Ting Ho Dung Posted November 26, 2016 Author Posted November 26, 2016 Wait, did she say "resident" @ 49 seconds?
polara Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Lest my lack of enthusiasm for Orianthi be taken wrong, what I'm trying to say is just... If I heard her, not knowing age, gender, race, nationality... I'd shrug and say "Good player," but not want to know more. It's not unethical to realize that one's looks are a help in succeeding in music - duh! - but she's not famous exclusively for her playing. For contrast, I dig Hillary Hahn because of her playing but am not dead sure what she looks like.
Toadroller Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Did someone ask for shredder Hendrix covers? ...with his usual humor and antics. You can't take the shredder out, but you can put it in.
Ting Ho Dung Posted November 28, 2016 Author Posted November 28, 2016 Does somebody have a sandwich for poor Paul?

Jakeboy Posted November 29, 2016 Posted November 29, 2016 You know, I think I mentioned this before, but maybe not...one band that I enjoyed more than almost all the others at the King Biscuit Blues Festival was Katie Guillen & The Girls from KC. Katie on a warm Tele through an old HiWatt combo, some other chick on a rock-steady bass, and the most John Bonham sounding drummer I have ever heard....a rail this girl named Stephanie...she POUNDED Bonham style. They sounded like Zep but were doing it all their own way. They ruled the Fest.

Having played with a great woman player for years, I inow how hard it is for them to be taken seriously, Back in the '90s I had the argument with NAMM regarding female musicians. NAMM was of the opinion that only THREE PERCENT of the music gear market was females....so it was not even worth marketing to?!?! I SWEAR that is what the old farts truly believed, as they complained at the same time about the troubles they had at expanding the market and music education in schools. And the times I had meetings with the editors of Guitar Player and the other major guitar magazines about covering women players more. Their response was "But we already wrote about Bonnie Raitt/Jennifer Batten in the last TWO YEARS." The publisher of Guitar Player actually said, "Our subscription base is only TWO PERCENT FEMALE and we can never seem to increase that...Why are all the womenr who play guitar LESBIANS?" I SWEAR that is what he said. My reply was, "I think you just answered your own question about why you have almost no female readers." So, 25 years later it is somewhat better. The shame is that Orianthi has become the next "Jennifer Batten" and there are many others women who should also get some exposure. The industry just seems to latch o to one at a time that is safe to write about. My friend Jodee Frawlee, a longtime Bostom area killer woman player (and former Hamer endorser BTW) sort of put it best in a song of her's called "Freak Show"....basically, how great women players are viewed more as sideshow freaks and spectacles. Ronni Crooks used to ise the "Svengal" reference is a similar way...when record execs would tell her nobody wants to see hot woman play guitar like Hendrix or Van Halen. They would just say, "dress sexy, sing and strum some chords, honey." It ain't easy for women players. So, good for Orianthi....although I don't get the Sambora thing. Small world - Jodee is/was my guitar instructor....she used to tell me that she had several Hamers at-home, including a Cali that had so much playing-time, she wore the finish off of it.

I was dating a hot Israeli chick from a rich family and wrote something like: cute little Jew girl with Jesus-big tits your ass bulged out with greenbacks And just my luck. My Prof....Stan Rubin LOVED it and printed 500 copies and handed it out to all his classes and wrote it on the chalkboard and talked it up like mad. Only problem was, the chick's best friend was in my class and went back and told her and she wasn't flattered. The more musical point....the biggest gripe of many female guitar players is that the guitar body hits them n the boobs and is uncomfortable. You'll notice most of them choose body shapes or get around that or strap them lower.

I know some female Tele users that prefer the belly carve on the back so that it doesn't rub into their ribcage and their hips when they move around on stage

mc2 Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 ^^^^^^ Decent pop song. Very Kelly Clarkson. Did Richie Sambora insist on being in the video and that is his hand playing on the guitar neck in the foreground ? 😀😀😀
princeofdarkness56 Posted December 2, 2016 Posted December 2, 2016 See the Hendrix poster on the wall ? Also spotted Vai and a Sabbath one. Have to give her kudos for taste. Good song too.
