zorrow Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Some time ago I paid 56 bucks for Mercyful Fate's "9", Japanese Edition, just because it contains a quite hard to find bonus track --quite dumb purchase, IMHO, because I already had the USA version of the album. So, what's the highest price you've paid for an album? Why?
Willie G. Moseley Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 $25 for TUBULAR BELLS III, an import. Was a big fan of the earlier Mike Oldfield stuff, and TUBULAR BELLS II ('92) had been a decent "sequel" (that term is printed on the cover of TUBULAR BELLS II, and is appropriate), but TUBULAR BELLS III was unlistenable---no catchy hooks, too much vocal material, and the signature riff was barely heard. The caveat is that this opinion is based on what I heard---I couldn't even make myself finish listening to it.Apparently I didn't learn a complete lesson, as I got the two-CD set LIGHT + SHADE a few months ago; it had been hyped as Oldfield's venture into techno, and it was a boring as the bulk of that genre is. Turned around and sold it for what I paid for it.Oldfield's a genius, but there have been times where he has outright made me waste my money.
Turdus Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 10 years ago, I paid over $50 for the Babys first record on CD. It was the original Chrysalis release, and I'd been looking for years for it. That was a bargain, as it was missing the front cover artwork. At the time, I'd seen it go for over $75.5 years ago, it was packaged with "Broken Heart", and released on an Indy label. I bought that as well, and then it went out of print, and the price skyrocketed. I think this was "re" released recently.I saw them on TV when they first hit the States, in the 70's. Marshall stacks, Les Pauls.... The impact on me, was probably similar to those that experienced the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, lol.
jwhitcomb3 Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I sold a copy of "Bath of Bacon" by the Jazz Butcher on eBay for $150. I sold a DCC gold CD of Jethro Tull's Aqualung for even more!I think the most I paid was about $40 for a copy of "King Strut and Other Stories" by Peter Blegvad. Great album!-Jonathan
santellavision Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Maybe not the dumbest, but, I think I paid 70-80 bucks for some Beatles bootlegs in Japan. I've probably got about 100 Beatles CD's.Now with the new digital remasters, in the famous words of Tommy Lee Jones from 'Men in Black', "Guess I'll have to buy the White Album again".On the other side... I did sell off my MSFL CD's right after they closed shop (Since reopened) But, I got a ton for those on ebay. A couple went for over $100.
BlueRedWhite Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Highest price?? well, two CDs, a gift i received: A John Sykes ballads album japanese edition shipped from Japan (60$ + i guess) i make a copy of it instead of playing it directly, it's my most valuable cd the other a gift i made: an all out Queen Collector edition (90$ +) worst buying of all times: walmart's 10.99$ 80's hard rock selection (3 collections) -it did'nt say anywhere that it was NOT performed by the original bands- a total waste of money
DaveL Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I paid $50 for the Circus Of Power debut CD... quoteworst buying of all times: walmart's 10.99$ 80's hard rock selection (3 collections) -it did'nt say anywhere that it was NOT performed by the original bands- a total waste of money Wal-Mart says you can't open returned stuff, but that sounds misleading to me, I wouldhave complained. Then again, I have a best of LA Guns that is all the same songs butthey were re-recorded. I HATE when they do that.
serial Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Funny that this post just came up. Just yesterday I remembered that copies of Lets Active's "Cypress/Afoot" cd were selling in the $175-200 range a couple of years back. With iTunes, etc, I didn't need to hold on to my copy THAT badly. Unfortunately for me, it's since been re-released and is all over the place for $10-15. Oh well!
mathman Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 40 something for Cheap Trick- Sex America Cheap Trick. worth every penny!
specialk Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Highest price was just a few months ago. $23 for Wishbone Ash Live Dates. Worth every penny! Dumbest purchase was, well, too many to count,
Feynman Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I once paid retail price for Use Your Illusion I and II.
Don Brown Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Most for a CD - A german import of Blind Guardian, someone either here or on the old Harmony Central boards talked me into it. It's fine, so not a big loss, but I don't listen to it that much.I did pay nearly 70 for an original Criteron Collection of "Spinal Tap" when it had gone out of print and before it was re-released (with more bonus stuff). I got the re-release and watch that one and keep the Criterion Copy for safe-keeping.Usually I get my CDs at Half-Price-Books and rarely pay more than 6 bucks. Got some real finds that way. I don't buy DVDs anymore thanks to Redbox, one of the great inventions in America today.I'd pay decent money if I could find CDs of the first two "Swirling Eddies" recordings. My tapes disappeared long ago.Best deal, I found the complete "You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore " (6 double CDs) in a cool pink crate for 20, still sealed. Now I'm not the biggest Zappa fan in the world, and I don't think I could listen straight through, but it is still a hell of a deal.
Steve Haynie Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 The most I have paid for a box set has been over $200. That would be one of those Bear Family box sets with 8 - 12 CD's covering an old country artist's entire catalog. Those have been given as Christmas gifts to my father. After reading about what you guys have paid for individual CD's I do not feel so bad about paying $25 for a Munetaka Higuchi solo album import CD.
hamerican gigolo Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 The highest price i ever paid for an album was about ten years ago,i bought 2 of the first 3 Love albums on Elektra. I gave $40 apiece for both. First edition,VG condition. Glad i bought them when i did.
belgian Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I paid 40 Euro for a copy of " Hendrix in the west" on cd , got it and found out it was a russian pressing that I doubt to be legal.Found a few weeks later the original album on vinyl for 5 Euro.....
Hamer Bass Head Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 $30 Dollars for Ian Gillan's "Glory Road", it was well worth it ( I was replacing a copy that was stolen a few years before
santellavision Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I paid 40 Euro for a copy of " Hendrix in the west" on cdI sold that one (A Japanese pressing) for over $100. I love that CD. Jimi is freakin' on fire on the opening cut Johnny B. Goode. Still gives me chills.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Purchased a new/sealed copy of Tommy Shaw's "What If" CD on eBay for $40+ BIN after seeing it on Amazon for $100+. Then purchased Tommy Shaw's "Ambitious" CD for $38 new/sealed.Yep, $78 + shipping for 2 CDs I could have gotten for a few bucks on cassette or LP. Someone must have reprinted the CDs finally, because the bottom has dropped out and I think you can get either one for $10 now. Still worth every penny, because at the time, there was no way to know the CDs would become cheaply available 2 years later. I had two extra years of some dang good music.I highly recommend both CDs to anyone/everyone who likes straight ahead rock and decent guitar work. Better, in some ways, than his work with either Styx or Damn Yankees.
tommy p Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Years ago, before any of these were widely available, I bought both Phil Lynott solo CD's and a couple of Thin Lizzy for about $40 each at a CD show (remember those?). And this was at a time when I had NO money. I remember agonizing at the booth with them in my hand so no one else could get them. I was so scared I'd never see them again, and I still have them all.
licksville Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I paid close to $30 for a japanese import vinyl of Yngwie's Rising Force. It was the early 80s, I heard a cut on the local college station, and it blew my mind. I immediately called the radio station, had them spell the name while I wrote it down. Had to call around to find a record store that had a copy and the import was the only one I could find. (For you younger guys, $30 was real money back in the 80s.)
marcnorth Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I paid $40 apeice for the first 2 "Captain Beyond"albums on CD, both were Japanese Imports. I paid $54 for an "Armageddon" LP still sealed in the plastic. Never have even opened it yet. Got it 6 or 7 years ago.
jwhitcomb3 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Funny that this post just came up. Oh well!GREAT album(s)! I thought I was getting a great deal a few years back on ebay for $26 and the bastard sent me a CD-R!
Brooks Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 last year i bought a cd w/ the last 2 of pantera's 4 self released 80's hair metal releases, "i am the night", & "power metal" (which was their last home made record, and their 1st w/ phil anselmo). think i paid $25...i burned a copy and ebay'd it for ~$40. amazing to hear a 18 year old darrell shred w/ such badass chops for a mere teen.great pinch harmonics verse riff. i think this sounds like ratt. vocals by terry glaze, later of lord tracy;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z41ltDowEUa young phil before he developed his own vocal style (total rob halford clone at this point)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbMjlEt8z4U...feature=related
59burst Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 About $30 for the Badlands "Dusk" Japanese import cd and upper $20's for the first cd of theirs, which are all out of print. Well worth it-great stuff. I bought their second cd for $10 on ebay, maybe because it was a Bmg copy, but who cares?
bubs_42 Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 65 bucks for 4 discs of GunsNRoses Rare tracks. B.S. some where 15 second clips of a song like Hotel California they did a sound check. Still got it but nobody would give me thier 2 cents for it.
